🎉🎉🎉 #NewWest will allow four- and six-plexes across more spots across the city! 🎉🎉🎉 It was a little spicy last night, with a number of people speaking out against the Infill Housing Program but council approved it, with Councillors McEvoy, Henderson, Nakagawa, and Mayor Johnstone voting in favour.

If you're in the #newwest area and have the time tonight there is a public hearing on adding more gentle density to the city!

Thanks @yesinnewwest.bsky.social for the reminder. I got my quick letter of support in. There's still time! Happy to see the city moving forward with stratified infill housing. Should have happened years ago. For better or worse, the changes are much more sensitive than Burnaby. #newwest

🚨 PUBLIC HEARING ALERT 🚨 Tonight #NewWest council will hold a public hearing to allow four- and six-plexes on 3,000 properties. Gentle density, good! Unfortunately every single letter sent in is in opposition. Bad!

Hey #NewWest @newwestminster.bsky.social you certainly have supporters of the Tiny Homes project, despite what some noisy people say. Count me as a +1.

I wrote an email to the mayor and council in New Westminster to support the proposed Tiny Homes Village for our homeless neighbours. You can read the letter in my alt text. Please feel free to write your own to mayorandcouncillors@newwestcity.ca
Dear mayor and councillors,

Last week I received a pamphlet in my mailbox from a group called ‘Oppose NW Drug Site What’d App Group’ regarding this project. I was appalled that anyone would put so much effort into preventing homeless people from getting safe and secure shelter. I live a few blocks up the hill from the proposed site, and I am writing to express my support for this project.

I first heard about the project a few weeks ago and thought the location was odd. I was concerned that the site was too far from anything, being at the end of a dead end street sandwiched between a dangerous high-traffic road and the river. I thought the location might be a hardship for people who might not own cars, and especially if they had health issues that would limit their mobility. I joked with my friends that ‘I support housing the homeless, but this is the wrong location’. When I read about the on-site services to help people meet their daily needs these concerns were quelled and I felt proud of my City for being leaders in housing our most vulnerable neighbours.

I don’t think opposition to drug-use is a valid argument against this project. For starters, drug-use exists across the income spectrum. Secondly, not all homeless people use drugs. Thirdly, ‘housing first’ as opposed to ‘treatment first’ has been proven as a more effective approach to reducing substance abuse https://www.utoronto.ca/news/housing-first-more-effective-treatment-first-addressing-addiction-homelessness-study

I hope the organized opposition does not discourage you from pursuing this important and potentially life-saving project. I’m excited to see it move ahead.

#6 on my 2025 Top 10 list is our regional leadership on addressing new housing regulations. This includes developing a made-for-#NewWest approach that meets our regulated housing targets today and funding tools to assure we can build the parks and pipes a community needs to thrive into the future.

#4 on my 2025 list is our progress on one of the region’s biggest issues: affordable housing. We need more investment here from all levels of government, but here in #Newwest we are saying yes to affordable housing, and it is getting built.

Supportive housing is evidence-based and non-partisan. Not long ago, people experiencing homelessness had to "graduate" into housing - they couldn't get housing if they used substances or had a mental illness. How can you recover from anything without a home? Read on 👇

Hey #newwest please write council and let them know you support this. A shelter like this will help keep people safe and give them a better chance to connect to the resources and supports they need.

Hey #NewWest! A temporary use permit for a 24/7 emergency shelter at the old Army & Navy is going to council on Monday. If you'd like people to have a place to stay that would "reduce the potential for death, illness and injury for the unhoused" then write to clerks@newwestcity.ca with your support!
