Vendredi soir c’était la deuxième édition de la transgressiv’ à Orléans. Animée par la féerique @nymphea-drag.bsky.social, on a pu y découvrir des artistes divers mais tous talenteux(ses). Juste Chantal, Mona Mour, Nezar, et Soleil ont rythmé la soirée de leurs prestations hautes en couleurs. Merci!

Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 04 - "Drinks"

Let's have a drink!
Of course, if you're French you can have a drink anytime. But we have our traditional one, called L'APÉRO. It's short for aperitif, from the latin aperio, which means to open. It's the drink that opens your apetite. (Image of Cesar saying "Vini Vidi Vici".
So before lunch or dinner, people meet for l'apéro (image of Amélie Poulain and Boulet at a bar) and for the first drink, we have to "trinque". Trinquer (verb) means to clink glasses. It's a toast. (It also means "to suffer" for some reason. A french adage even says "les parents boivent, les enfants trinquent" = when parents drink kids suffer (Image of a car wrapped around a tree. A voice says "ow" and the drunken dad answers "hush, daddy's driving"))
And yes, you have to clink glasses with EVERYONE at the table, looking them in the eye and without crossing the streams. Don't you DARE drink before this. (Image of a bunch of people looking intensely at each other, clinking glasses and saying "santé")
The basic toast is "à ta santé" (to your health). Can be (is often) shorten in "Santé !" (health!) or "à la tienne!" (to yours !) (images showing Boulet drunker and drunker with a bunch of empty pints.)
We also say a lot "tchin-tchin", which means "please" in chinese. (But careful: it means penis in japanese) (image of a cute penis with a beret and mustache, holding a beer and saying "santé !")

For beer you can ask: UN DEMI (25cl) it means "a half", like in "a half-pint". It's the base standart. UNE PINTE, sometimes called UN SÉRIEUX (a serious)= a pint. It's 50cl. There is also an old format called UN GALOPIN (a brat), mostly for tasting. Tiny 12,5cl. (come on.)
DRUNK YET? Congratulations, you are:
BOURRÉ (stuffed) (Image of Boulet as a doll)
PLEIN (full) (Image of a Boulet made of glass, full of liquid)
BEURRÉ (buttered) (Image of Boulet covered with butter)
Sometimes you can add an extra comparaison, like "Beurré comme un petit Lu" (Petit Lu is a french biscuit fron Nantes. (Image of a Petit Lu holding a beer)
OH NO! YOU DRANK TOO MUCH! NOW YOU ARE SICK! So now you are going to VOMIR (throw up), or less elegant: DÉGUEULER. It literally means "Get out your mouth" but "gueule" is for an animal mouth. For humans we say "bouche".
You can also say GERBER (a gerbe being a bunch of flowers), you can also say POSER UNE QUICHE (to put down a quiche) or UNE GALETTE (a crepe)

Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 03 - "Cows"

Cows - In France, we love cows. A lot of expressions have cows in them.
Being tough on someone is "être vache" : being cow (Image of a cow telling Boulet "your coat stinks") - Also, a mean person can be "une peau de vache" : a cow's skin (image of Boulet wearing a cow's outfit and saying "screw you").
It would come from the fact that cows can suddenly kick you when you are behind them. "Un coup de/en vache" : a cow's hit, is when you betray or trick someone. (image of a cow kicking Boulet out of the frame) you can also say "une vacherie": a "cowerie"
But more important: "la vache" is also a general exclamation you can use in almost any circumstance. (Image: Boulet is using "la vache" admiratively while looking at a painting, angrily while seing the price of a shirt, moved while recieving a present, painfully while waking up with hangover).
VACHEMENT is a slang adverb that means "a lot", "extremely". It means "cowly" (Image of a very cool cow wearing a "cowly cool" shirt)
In a totally different style, France also has a lovely way of saying it's raining a lot: IL PLEUT COMME VACHE QUI PISSE, which could be translated by: "IT'S RAINING LIKE PISSING COW" (Image of Boulet under the rain, saying "La vache". The clouds are shaped like utters and make "Moo" sounds)

In the old slang, the french equivalent of "ACAB" was "MORT AUX VACHES": death to the cows. An anarchist rally cry, the cows being all forms of law enforcement (image of a cow in an anti-riot armor, being targeted by stones. The demonstrators scream "Boo" and the cow says "No : Moo!".
It was an insult from the 1870 war: when the german were occupying Alsace, they had guard houses saying "Wache", meaning "sentinel". (image of a cow with a german helmet. Someone is saying "vache" and it answers "no, wache."
In 1871, the police headquarters were moved to the center of Paris where the chicken market used to be. The cops became "Les poulets" : the chickens (Image of a chicken and a cow in uniform)
There are dozens of other cow-related expressions in french, but I'll finish with two we sometime use in my region of origin (burgondy)
When a place is really dark, you can say IL FAIT NOIR COMME DANS LE CUL D'UNE VACHE. Literally: it's black like inside a cow's ass. (image of a voice coming from a cow's ass, saying "Oh no, where am I?") and when someone has very wrinkly clothes, like "stayed up all night", I heard the expression "TU AS L'AIR DE SORTIR DE LA BOUCHE D'UNE VACHE" (You look like you came out from a cow's mouth). (Boulet coming out of a cow's mouth saying "ah shit, I'm late)
Oh and if you stop by a market you can find "La Vache qui rit" (the laughing cow) It's a cheese that is so pasterized it could almost be american. This creepy french cow is famous all over the world!

A lot of expressions use "french", like "french bread", "a french leave", "french fries"... So it raises the one essential question : How do you french kiss in french ? (image: Boulet and Amelie Poulain kissing in front of the Sacré Cœur. A mime and the Eiffel Tower in the background. Amelie is saying "Ohlàlà monsieur Boulet"
There are different types of kisses in France:
-La bise to say hello/goodbye. You don't really kiss, we are not savages. It mostly consist in touching cheeks with a "mwa" sound. It's however absurdly complex to understand when and how many times. (image: to people doing "la bise")
-Donner un bisou/un baiser. "Give a kiss". Means lips are touching the cheek, the lips, or any other part you judge appropriate to kiss (image: Amelie kissing a foot) but CAREFULLY use "baiser": "un baiser" is a kiss, but "baiser" as a verb means "to have sex"
-Embrasser can mean a lot of things, it's the basic way to say "to kiss", which doesn't make any sense because the word itself means "to take in your arms" (image: two people kissing)
EXAMPLES: "S'embrasser sous le gui" (to kiss under the mistletoe) / "Je t'embrasse" at the end of a letter or an e-mail ("love&kisses) / "Embrasse tes parents pour moi" ("say hi to your parents for me)
Hey! Does that means that "embrasse" is "embrace"? Yes, you can also use it like that. You can "embrasse" your destiny, or the dark side (image: Luke Skywalker screaming.)

But Wait... Does that mean that French doesn't have a specific word for the FRENCH KISS? The one with the tongue and all?
Well… No. But we have a pretty good slang for this.
In France, "to french kiss" is "Rouler une pelle". Which literally means "To toll a shovel" (image: Boulet is putting a shovel in the mouth of Amelie Poulain, who is saying "Ohlàlà monf'eur Boulet")
It would come to the similar expression "Rouler un patin" (to roll a rollerskate / ice skate) (Image: Amelie is saying "say haaa" and putting a rollerskate in Boulet's mouth). Sometime you'll also meet "rouler une galoche" (to roll an old shoe. Probably because of the "patin" thing) (Amelie watches Boulet approach with an old shoe and says "oh no", horrified).
It would come from "patiner" and "peloter", which both used to mean "to touch with insistance, to caress. We still use "peloter" in this sense. (Image: Amelie is touching Boulet's butt, and he's blushing "Ooh mademoiselle !"
I also heard a theory that says it could come from trains, and the shovel to load coal that was shaped like a tongue. But nothing conclusive. (Image: a small shovel of coal is approaching the furnace. The shovel says "you're hot, baby", and the furnace says "Oh, monsieur Boulet ♥"
Fun fact, if you try to roule une pelle and get turned down... It's called "se prendre un rateau" ("to get a rake")

"So, in France we have this expression when something is a bit silly and very (too much) sweet, we say it's Cucul la Praline. Example of cucul la praline: some rom-com like "Love, Actually" or feelgood movies like "Amelie" (Image of Amelie saying "Let's go to Montmartre and have a chocolate, I'll tell everyone they are special"
Cucul comes from "cul", that means "ass". We don't relly know why it means silly/sweet. But there are other examples of doubling the word to make it cuter. Like "con" (stupid) becomes "con-con" (a bit stupid but well-meaning" - La praline is an almond covered in sugar, an old recipe created in the XVIII century for the Marechal de Plessis Pralin (Image of the marechal saying "mmh very delicious mon ami")
We don't really know why cucul and la praline ended up together. Probably because it sounded funny and insisted on the "sweet" side. There are (less-known) versions with "cucul la fraise" (ass-ass-the strawberry) or -weirder- "cucul la rainette" (ass-ass-the-frog)
There is no exact translation in English, but my friend proposed "Butt-butt-nutty", so if you are a journalist or a writer or else, please use it. I would love it to become a real expression.

Some people pretend it could also come from a coconut from praslin in the Seychelles, but there is no explanation on why it would mean "silly" (it's called coco-fesse (coco-butt) because of its shape)

Avec #Gladiators, TF1 récupère tous les gimmicks de la version anglaise, qui date des années 90. Si ça marche aux UK, c’est dommage qu’ils n’aient pas modernisé pour la France comme l’avait fait l’Australie. Au moins les gladiateurs sont assez cools (❤️ Furie)
