@pvh.ca discussing "AI is a versioning / collaboration problem" at #localfirstconf definitely resonates with the approach we took^^. Next step is to retain attribution of accepted suggestions (i.e.: Edited by Alice with AI) in version history. Looking fwd to the talk tomorrow!

Really excited about this - definitely more complex than expected (especially when dealing with advanced formatting) and spent a lot of time fine-tuning the UX. Check out the docs @ www.blocknotejs.org/docs/ai

Excited to share the first version of BlockNote AI! Connect any model, customize prompts, and interact with AI just like you would with a human teammate. The user stays in control — accepting, rejecting, or refining suggestions. ⬇️ 1 min demo below ⬇️

After 4 years of work, I'm incredibly excited to introduce LiveStore, the next-gen data layer I'm building for Overtone. It's based on reactive SQLite and has a built-in sync engine. Give it a try - would love your feedback!

It should be easy to add Notion-like collaborative text editing. This is why we've just released first-party support for BlockNote, enabling: • Fully-hosted collaborative block-based editing • Real-time comments and notifications • Offline support, multiple editors, and more

This is absurdly great, but I haven't read a single news article about it. A fully open source, offline-first alternative to Notion that's a collab between the French and German governments because they want to host docs securely and on their own terms. THIS is what Europe should be doing.

Thanks for sharing Ben! Cool to know; the Docs team has been sponsoring downstream open source technologies. An important part of Docs is the www.blocknotejs.org editor I'm working on - and it's been great and fulfilling to work together with the 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪 teams on this.

Excited to announce that I'm leaving Tiptap, I will be joining BlockNote at the beginning of the month. It's been less than a year, but I'm in a good place to take some risk and try starting up a company. Given that I'm leaving, I thought it'd fun to share the things I built while at Tiptap. So 🧵

100% agree and good point in combination with regulatory capture. Slow and late can still be useful of course (tech industry is still young) - but yes, also interesting to think of other ways (i.e. optimizing for local niche markets you mentioned earlier)

2) Re. SaaS: besides talent, isn't running SaaS is extremely low cost / high margin? In that case, it's an education problem? Or perhaps, is enshittification related to a VC dominated market that demands outsized returns?

1) I'm more positive on regulation changing dynamics; maybe long term, but I'm curious to see what the DMA will do to the instant messaging / chat market

I'll ask some economists about deconsolidation examples, interesting! I'm not sure I agree on two points though:

Oh and btw, I don’t blame strava for all of this (I do for the privacy PR spins); this is an industry / society wide problem. I’ve been through 20 years of this stuff building products on MSN, Google, Twitter, Strava etc. Same shit every time - it’s time for a better future ❤️ Ur thoughts @pvh.ca?

YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
As a techie; ofc pushing more data to end-users (decentralized systems, #localfirst, etc). But to really disrupt the economics I think regulators can play a key role to both level the playing field (market control) and safeguard consumer rights (data ownership). Call me old-fashioned, or European 🤷‍♂️

Strava's Big Changes Aim To Kill Off Apps

❤️ I might share more details about our experience later. For now, my heart is with founders who see their life’s work at risk. Relive grew from 2M to 20M users after we were kicked out. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Don’t give in to legal pressure when the big guy tries to strong-arm you.

YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
🚀I’d also love to see if as an industry we can join our hands together and design an independent system that makes it easier for users to control how their data syncs between devices, apps and services. Ping me if you’re interested in exploring this.

What can we do? 🚴‍♂️ 🏃🏽‍♀️ As a consumer, you have the power to stop companies from claiming rights on your data. Stop companies from treating you as their product. #MyLegsMyData

YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
This “bait-and-switch” is exactly what’s happening here. Ironically, Strava itself was built by aggregating user data from devices like Garmin - likely still the source of over 50% of their uploads.
120
YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
Silicon Valley has a long history of opening platforms to foster innovation, only to later crack down on companies and copy their best features (as they did with Relive).
110
YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
In private conversations, Strava made it clear there were competitive concerns about our roadmap. In public, they emailed millions of users with PR-gibberish saying they disconnected Relive because of “Privacy & Safety” concerns.
110
YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
...they're doing this under the false flag of “user privacy”; a blatant lie and outright offensive to users. They did this with Relive in 2019 as well...
120
YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
Users give explicit consent to share THEIR data with 3rd party apps they love and trust. Now, they figured this is against their business interests and want a monopoly on your data (perhaps triggered by AI advancements). You could argue they don’t have an obligation to act as a data hub, but..

YousefED @yed.bsky.social · 21/11/2024
10.000+ apps build on top of the Strava API to make useful apps for millions of athletes; ranging from indie devs, to startups, to serious businesses. With 100M+ users Strava plays a central role in the ecosystem as it’s the easiest way to access workout data from users and build new, exciting apps.

...they then decided to kick us off their platform (details in last post). Fortunately, we came out stronger. Yesterday, I woke up to the news that it's likely they're pulling the same trick again to other developers. I'm posting this thread to share our experience and my thoughts on the events:
