In a very long list of useless things I am playing with right now, it seems that NTP does it's job... And my rube goldberg machine of raspbery Pis and ATAs do not add that much latency Dialing NIST Colorado's time service here, from France, the clock pulse is basically in sync with this computer

ISO of (BW, for simplicity) film is determined by computing how much exposure is required to achieve recorded density in the shadows at a specific rate of development I do not have a sensitometer, so I use my enlarger and a step wedge: but here's my test of Kentmere 200 (found 182, close enough!)

With the caveat that this is the THC used for Canadarm2, This is an analog device!

Fun tidbit, Canadarm uses the same input method, as demonstrated here by JAXA Astronaut Wakata Koichi

Maybe I am missing something, but I cannot find a good replica or a good analog of this input device on the space shuttle's cockpit that can be just used on a computer. It is called the THC: Translation Hand Controller, and is a 3 DoF device used for... Well, translation control in space!

The full Vulkan specification in its latest version with all extensions is a small 6884 pages, as a PDF (most of it is the description of data structures and function calls, but the first few chapters actually are explanatory)

I have downloaded the demo of Kittens Space Agency. Need to spend a little bit of time with this, but as far as a "spiritual successor to KSP", I think they're really getting somewhere here. Loading the solar system (apparently the whole thing) destroyed my 3080 10GB I got in 2020

This is a modern retro-looking flash. It works stupidly well design-wise on this 1960’s rangefinder camera!

ChatGPT was doing fairly well at attempting to reconstruct a STL file form Gcode, analysing the extrusion commands to build cylinders, then fitting voxels inside.... But then it decided that it needed to check that 1+1 = 2

Going to spend a few drops of it to ask Waterman France why did this happen and also to encourage them to reintroduce this product on the market. Mostly for the bit. But I would be surprised if they don’t respond! (Yes, this bottle is about 10 years old - so it’s not the newer blue label)
Picture of an envelope addressed to “Waterman France - Service Client - 1 rue Maison Neuve BP 175 - 44800 Saint-Herblain”. This is written in brown ink.

The envelope has a teal Mariane “Service +” stamp.

On the envelope is sitting an old bottle of Waterman Absolute Brown ink.

An amber and gold fountain pen is visible on the top of the image. The pen is a Pilot Custom 823.

I promised film scans, here there are: This is no alternative to Ektachrome. Kodak might be unintentionally making a pretty acceptable 50 ISO tungsten balanced "lower" contrast and saturation slide film (with some amount of magenta/green shift) Again, it's a negative film for planes

E-6 Cross processed Kodak Aerocolor IV (REFLX Pro 100 in this case. It's same film as SantaColor 100 and Elektra 100. Probably other rebrand exist) Rating it EI 50 (so, box speed +1EV), 85B warming + Skylight 1A filters. This looks too good to be a hack, like WTF? Will do real scans later...

Searching stuff inside the scan of a old paper from 1922. The OCR that was used on the PDF read the greek letter gamma (γ) as a 7. Which is slightly annoying when this is a paper about sensitometry. (Interestingly they use a geometric method of obtaining the gamma, not the analytical one)
screenshot form Firefox. Searching for "whole word" 7, γ is highlighted in text instead

I really really this image to be softer contrast. To illustrate, here’s a digitally made inversion of the above picture Retaining the highlights and getting shadow details exposed and developed are the 2 things that should allow getting more of the tonal range of the slide expressed on paper.

Arthur Brainville @ybalrid.info · 18/06/2025
This is the negative exposure developed. It kinda looks like if this was film, was pushed many many stops. Maybe this result is effectively a low exposure over developed. It’s really hard to know. Also this grey-ish thing is the maximum silver density on this color paper developed in BW
110
Arthur Brainville @ybalrid.info · 15/06/2025
All the test prints. First few are too blue. I need to think about which of the 3 ways of reducing contrast I should try to test first. (May need all three of them combined)
010
Arthur Brainville @ybalrid.info · 15/06/2025
This is a scan of the slide. You can see there is a lot of dynamic range lost on the printing process. I have 3 things I can attempt: - use a low contrast BW developer as 1st dev before reversal exposure - pre-flash the paper - retard color development with sodium sulfite

Arthur Brainville @ybalrid.info · 15/06/2025
This is a very first attempt of doing RA-4 reversal printing from one ektachrome frame. I simply used ILFORD Multigrade black and white developer as 1st developer and just waved the print for a minute I for of a light before color development though the normal RA-4 process. Need lower contrast

I may actually write a blerb about this maybe on my mostly abandoned blog A rarely documented online cause of shutter failure for Canon A-series (here AE-1 Program) cameras is the "SW4 Count Switch" not actually closing after the 1st curtain latch is armed if it's dirty, or corroded (or both)
This is a picutre of what's under the left hand side of the Canon AE-1 Program's top plate.

Circled in red is a small golden spring (probably plated). This spring want to contact a golden (also probably plated) post.

I drew a blue arrow pointing to the contact point that can get dirty.

Normally after you advance the camera, the white plastic bit at the end of the sprint moves out of the way, the tension on the mechanism makes this contact act as a closed switch. Camera uses this switch to both know that the shutter is ready to fire, and the fact that the 1st curtain started moving (for exposure time control)

Made the mistake of trusting the Godox Lux Master flash’s auto mode (wich does not work as good as actual vintage thyristor flashes it seems😕), I have under exposed some ektachorme by a bit more than a stop or two. But, despite how dense the actual film is, the result scanned relatively well
The developed film against the ridiculously bright “flashlight mode” of Apple Watch Ultra 2The picture as scanned (slight crop) Another picture. A bit less under exposed but still under exposed. The rig.

Canceling a Chess dot com subscription is a 5 page form of surveys with the big highlighted button being "keep my subscription" Annoying, and somewhat dark pattern-ish. That would already be bad. But also it just does not work, it results in a server error.

With keeping the chems in collapsible bottles, with no oxygen, in a cool place, a Bellini C41 kit I mixed mid October is working fine today, and has processed quite a bit of film already, probably more than half way through the capacity. If you ask Bellini, these chemicals should be dead by now

A Canon Speedlite 540EZ on a EOS 650 looks slightly ridiculously big. (It is quite heavy at the very least) It was an eBay bargain. But I need to look for a A-TTL (so, film era EOS) canon flash that also has a movable head for bounce flash that is not that stupidly big maybe.
I am holding a Canon EOS 650 fitted with a Canon Speedlite 540EZ flash unit. I am holding the camera by the lens, a 28-70 zoom lens (that I don’t like very much to use, but is otherwise a very serviceable trans-standard Zoom for full frame EF camera. But it is also very slow.)
