Yeah, but the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 chip in the cartridge wouldn't have existed back then. Not to take away from anything they did (it's still impressive), but you have a custom cpu doing the heavy lifting, and the famicom is generated sprites on the screen. So it's hardly "sock famicom hardware"

Sorry I don’t. Since I make full non-matching decomps, I never hunted down the SH2 compilers.

This was hand-written over course of about 10y. The game was in a playable state years before LLM were a thing. I did experiment with claude a bit a few months back to see what the fuss was about and if it could automate some of the repetitive and mechanical tasks.

Back in February I headed up to Marin to backup some of Aric's old CDs from LucasArts era. In one of the backup, this odd demo surfaced. It's now preserved online.

In a very Indy-like move, we've unearthed a never-before-seen Lucasfilm Games Indiana Jones adventure! Note that we said "adventure," not "game." For possibly the first time ever, here's Indiana Jones and the Quest for Paradise VGA, the best ten-minute commercial you'll see this week.

haven't looked too much at the code, but since it seems to be opengl, renderdoc should be able to help (assuming we are not talking about ancient opengl)

it's a modified Ymir. I should probably put it up on github

Then I poke the memory and register to validate values make sense and compare to my local copy, asserting if it's diverging.

yaz0r @yaz0r.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
Should be generic enough to be usable on other games. It's mostly a mailbox between my code and a modified Ymir with some connection into the debugger. Conceptually, my code runs ahead, and when entering specific bits of code will just tell the debugger to run to a breakpoint.

This already allowed me to fine a bunch of subtle bugs (and some major ones!) that would cause collisions to misbehave in the decomp. Also added an input record/replay to deterministically replay the same inputs over while I'm debugging.

Wrote a test harness that let me run the decompiled game in lockstep with the Ymir emulator, validating that for the same input, the game behavior remain faithful to the original code. This checks character position, camera, collisions, and can easily add more. #panzerdragoonsaga #reverseengineering

For very fine tuned code aka critical systems, it still needs a lot of handholding and tends to reinvent the wheel a bit too much At this point I mostly use it for the not super critical stuff, and keep those for mostly me to hand roll as necessary. Also need to be weary of gaslighting sometjmes :-)

yaz0r @yaz0r.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
It’s good at taking care of all the mundane little things that one would not want to spend too much tjme on. It also helps a ton if you know what you want and how you would code it youself. Clause is also very good (in my experience) at explaining how code works in a foreign codebase.

Tonight I'm trying to debug collisions. Very little progress, but I did add some better way to display the collisions meshes as that are tested by the engine. Large cities are sectorized in cells, so only a fraction of the collisions are processed around Edge. #panzerdragoonsaga #reverseengineering
