Every billionaire "started in a garage" story conveniently leaves out parental loans, elite university connections and safety nets. Bezos got $300k from his parents. Gates' mom was on IBM's board. Musk's family owned an emerald mine. The capital is inherited. We should call it generationally funded.

Halvemaansteeg, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Today, a cycle only street crossing a tram only street.

Top, 1979, black and white: a busy road junction with a taxi in the foreground, a van and other cars queued behind it, and a cyclist among pedestrians crossing on the left. A "Politie" police station sits on the corner.

Bottom, today, in colour: the same junction, now a cycle street with no cars. A man and a young girl cycle away from the camera past bollards and traffic cones, with people walking and pulling suitcases on the paths either side.

we really should talk about the (British) Indian Army more

There is no sense in which the Indian Army was a minor element in
British power. It was “the leading British strategic reserve on land” and
made Britain an Asian land power for nearly two hundred years (Black
1998: 178). Indian divisions played critical roles in both world wars,
helping to prevent a German victory in France in the autumn of 1914,
eject Rommel from North Africa, and fight up the Italian peninsula, as
well as carrying the main burden of Britain’s war against Japan in Burma,

I go back and re-read Slim's "Defeat into Victory" every few years. If you're into that kind of thing, it's much more compelling and better written than any of the European theatre commanders' memoirs.

Learning from Persepolis- The regime actively cultivated a culture centered on martyrdom, grievance, and spiritual struggle. This allowed the state to reframe economic hardship and political repression not as failures, but as necessary tests of faith and loyalty.
