I've been working on these STR-500 string sampler instruments for over a year, the first batch is nearly...done? A strange feeling! Need to figure out the best strategy to sell them...

I went on a guided mushroom picking walk the other day. A person next to me was taking notes on a phone. So far so normal THE TWIST: they were doing this by composing WhatsApp messages and sending them to a contact named "My Phone" this is, objectively, SO GOOD

I recently found five CD copies of an album I made ten years ago after a residency in a small town in the Scottish Highlands. You can buy one! Or not, the choice is yours really. yannseznec.bandcamp.com/album/helmsd...

This is so 100% amazing and correct and applicable outside of games too, I have run into a lot of these kind of writing tropes in the experimental music tech world too

New paper for #CHI2026 - Play/Destroy: A portfolio of sound destruction devices. I dive into my thoughts and process behind destroying sounds, what it can mean and do. I frame it all in terms of sustainability, to push against the relentless pursuit of growth and seamlessness doi.org/10.1145/3772...
Screenshot of the first page of a paper entitled Play/Destroy: A portfolio of sound destruction devices, by Yann Seznec, Andreas Lindegren, Frida Lindegren, and Rob Comber. Abstract: Digital media operates on a curious boundary between storage and loss. While each new storage format promises a permanent solution to our exponentially expanding media libraries, they inevitably fail or otherwise become unusable. This paper reflects on a long-term design process that attempts to bring a different paradigm to the experience of personal digital media: destruction. We present an annotated portfolio of a set of sound listening devices, critically unpacking the particular temporal, perceptual, and experiential qualities that emerge when designing for the loss of personal media. These annotations show how destruction comes to matter in designing against the traditional bias towards growth and accumulation in HCI.First paragraph of the conclusion of a paper about the design of sound destruction:
"As I write this section an email notification arrives in my inbox, telling me that my cloud storage is full. Our digital lives are currently full of these moments where the responsibility of limiting our resource use is suddenly shifted to us personally. Our technology encourages us to create and share media without limits, but then punishes us when we do so. What content will I delete to free up space? How will it feel? The tools at my disposal do not enable this in any way that reflects the meaning of the content I must delete. And neither does the act of deleting them reflect or illustrate the actual act of deletion."Three hexagonal boxes on a white background. Each box has a chrome button. They are each painted a solid color: yellow, blue, and green.A pudgy finger presses a chrome button on a wooden box

I once read an interview with a game designer who said something like "player feedback on game design is useful 0% of the time". The argument was that the specific requests made by players were almost always bad, but their feelings were correct and should be addressed. Would love to find this again.

doing a lot of pondering these days about the feasibility of a project around making a new version of the gametrak string mechanism for the adafruit/sparkfun hacker-hobbyist market (spoiler alert: I think the feasibility is low, but the idea is tantalising)
Picture of the string mechanism from a Gametrak, hacked out of its original enclosure. The gametrak is a early-2000s era video game controller. It used a string on a coiled spring, attached to a potentiometer, and pulled through an X/Y joystick, to do surprisingly accurate motion capture of hands. You can hack it pretty easily to connect it to modern microcontrollers for fun analog gestural control. I use it a lot for making weirdo musical instruments.
