Together, these findings provide population-based benchmarks of EF development and highlight sensitive periods when neurocognitive deviations are most predictive of emerging psychopathology, informing identification and timing-specific prevention strategies.

3Age-resolved analyses further revealed that associations between EF deviations and mental health were strongest in early adolescence and gradually weakened with age, highlighting early adolescence as a potential sensitive period for the link between EF and mental health.

2Based on the normative curves, we quantified each adolescent’s EF deviation from age- and sex-expected levels. Greater below-norm EF was associated with more peer, conduct, and hyperactivity/inattention problems, and less prosocial behavior.

1We used GAMLSS to chart EF normative development of inhibitory control and working memory. Both improved with age but followed distinct trajectories: inhibitory control continued to mature, while working memory gradually plateaued. Individual variability also decreased with age.

Using data from 33,622 Chinese adolescents aged 11-18 years, we mapped normative developmental trajectories of executive function (EF) and examined how individual deviations in EF relate to mental health across age.
