🧵 Blacksky is looking to buy a server for $30k USD. We'd like the following specs or better: - 384 GB RAM - 80 TB NVMe; ZFS RAIDZ2 in 2 vdevs - 1 Gbps + 10 Gpbs burstable - at least 84 threads for the CPU(s) - Ideally somewhere in the eastern half of North America but open to North America and EU

Hmmm it would be cool if there were a way to donate smaller amounts of compute? Not sure how feasible this is 🤔

If you're reading this, my cat and I have boarded a one-way flight out of the United States. The Trump administration wrongfully denied my work permit renewal; after months of demanding that they follow the law, we have run out of legal recourse, and I have no choice but to leave the country. (🧵)

Normally you just need an ESP32/NRF board and antenna. Smaller boards with solar and a few batteries are near 100% uptime for like $50. Someone DIYed a version in a solar lawn light. Transmit is RF 915Mhz, and then messages use BT or BLE to connect to a meshtastic client on a phone.

I wonder if it would be worth it to publish the model weights as well, it would allow independent researchers to verify model performance. I understand it would not be appropriate to release datasets, which would be private data and may contain traumatic material.

Now that we're in the 2025 home stretch, our collective is shifting from retail hustle to reflection. This was a tough year, on lots of levels, but our public messaging has mostly focused on political concerns rather than the difficult financial position we've been in since Hurricane Helene. 1/

A photo of a hand with a pen writing on a notepad. The page reads "Firestorm's 2026 Survival Brainstorm" and includes the following items: "sell more books!", "fewer treats for Julius" (crossed out with a frowny face), "replace us with robots", and an unfinished line that reads "rob a ban". This image is satire—google jury nullification!

Backing up Spotify
annas-archive.li/blog, 2025-12-20, Discuss on Hacker News

We backed up Spotify (metadata and music files). It’s distributed in bulk torrents (~300TB), grouped by popularity.

This release includes the largest publicly available music metadata database with 256 million tracks and 186 million unique ISRCs.

It’s the world’s first “preservation archive” for music which is fully open (meaning it can easily be mirrored by anyone with enough disk space), with 86 million music files, representing around 99.6% of listens.

butchanarchy ko-fi fundraiser that reads: In the late summer of 2023 | got thrown around by a pair of cops and they injured my left shoulder. That shoulder never got proper medical care and dislocated when I was exercising late in 2024, and in January of this year I got surgery to fix the bad tear in my shoulder labrum. This along with long neglected dental care has put me back in steep medical debt. The amount here is what I need to come up with to pay for the surgery, 6 weeks of physical therapy, and necessary dental work.

The ICE kidnappings are terrifying and show why abolition is the only path. Kidnapping cops call themselves "special police units," but they're the jump out boys in most cities. Freddie Gray was kidnapped by them and the SCORPION unit killed Tyree Nichols. theconversation.com/tyre-nichols...

Tyre Nichols’ death underscores the troubled history of specialized police units

The officers charged in the murder of a Black man in Memphis, Tenn., were part of the elite SCORPION squad. Such units have an ugly history.

the thing teenage boys need to hear more than anything else is that it is actually okay if they don't grow up to be men at all. they don't have to feel invested in the political interests of men as a class, bc they dont have to BE men. it's okay if they grow up to be women, or something else :)
