After a great Spring semester reading Jin Ping Mei with some talented undergrads and grads, we're doing it again with Journey to the West! I'll be reading the revised Yu translation and the newish Xinhua edition of the original Chinese, looking forward to both.

The politicization & illegal cancellation of federal research funding is an existential crisis for every research university in the country, especially flagship R1 publics. Again, you would think university presidents would speak up, loudly & collectively, about this. Alas. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

I’m curious, is it common in Philosophy to go from postdoc to postdoc, STEM style, after getting a PhD?

Harvard's online CS50x Intro to Computer Science course is brilliant, you battle through C until you switch to the higher-level Python in Week 6. When you get there, it's such a relief, but you have a better understanding of what's going on under the hood.

From what I’ve heard, I’m sticking with the Roberts, for academic reasons. It’s always been received well enough in my classes, and I think it’s likely more precise.

Where are my Journey to the West/ 西游记 fans? I have a question: In Chapter 54, in the Country of Women, there's a scene where Sun Wukong promises that Tang Sanzang will marry the queen, as a way of stalling for more time. The monk gets upset at him for this and Wukong gives a little speech:

East Asian Studies is being gutted at Sheffield - all staff at risk with 8.6 FTE proposed to go (a third of us). Biggest cuts in Chinese and Japanese Studies. We’ll be taking a few days to process. Solidarity to Materials and Chemistry colleagues who are also dealing with similarly bad news.

There was already controversy about Schmidt on campus on two fronts: First, the allegations against him. Second, the granting of an honorary doctorate upon him that seemed to bypass the usual faculty governance vetting process.

At a time when everything I read about higher ed is The Ongoing Crisis™--diminishing attention spans, poor literacy, AI threats, cuts, etc--reading a long novel like Plum in the Golden Vase with a handful of smart, motivated undergrad and grad students was just fantastic this semester. I’ve heard similar things. Or places with direct admission to the PhD with the expectation that MA requirements are met along the way (and the possibility of “mastering out” if the department is not convinced of potential). Not sure how coursework etc. works in such cases.

Scott Gregory @xiaoshuoing.com · 19/03/2026
On the other hand, at this point in time, it’s hard to recommend a two-year MA as a prerequisite to a six- or seven-year PhD program

Princeton is a great example. MA not *required* for PhD admission, but offhand I can only think of one or two people who were admitted straight from BA.
