I would like to be a person who lives in a world of literary fiction and visual arts, and checking out pleasant local hikes. In reality, I do read some literary fiction, and go to the museum and exhibits, but compared to how much basketball I watch, it's as nothing.

I worked in the wine business, and the Turin books, and the perfume approach to sensory evaluation ended up opening some really useful perspectives. And almost no one else had read anything related, even though perfume is this massive industry based almost entirely on one sense.

When I lived abroad I'd get local history books, and end up having locals tell me I knew a bunch of stuff about the place they didn't. Immigrants often sometimes simply see things in a different way, that no one else sees. The latest one for me is Yemeni coffee shops. Just outstanding, who knew?

A very talented science of smell & perfume guy (Luca Turin) thinks (paraphrased) that the reason Tide stands alone in many ways is that the scent profile wasn't/isn't like anything else. That Tide is a kind of musk (not that kind) scent rather than a floral or fruit like almost all detergents.

True, and I've experienced it going the other way. There's sound argument that a large portion of the great achievements of the USA, art, science, business, engineering and more, would be impossible if the USA was a low immigration country. You want America to be great? Encourage immigration.

That won't be all they're hitting. The data center attacks are very popular globally. I'd expect a massive wave as soon as they have the assets ready. If they can take down internet in Russia, it's huge pressure on Putin. Add in refineries and this betrayal from Trump could actually wreck Putin.

It feels very dotcom, honestly. Inasmuch as there's far too much capital pushing products that people don't understand the use cases for, and in a real way, don't want to use. Petsdotcom was a fiasco, no one was ready give the internet a credit card to send them pet supplies. Now it's everywhere.

The people pirating music on Napster generally just wanted to listen to it. They weren't sending it to what amounts to a digital chop shop and reselling it, without actually knowing or caring what any of it is. Piracy for personal use is bad for artists, this is much worse.

I like it. We also have a system that depends on growth for basically everything. One major way the USA achieves growth with a falling birthrate is immigration. Unlike various other industrial nations facing a massive population collapse (Japan, Italy, etc).

It's kind of amazing how well things work, given how poorly paid most public employees are given their level of responsibility. There are definitely perks, but have all these captured industries that might not be captured if you paid those regulators competitively to the private sector.

That's true, but ICE seems to do it every time they can, as a policy. Whereas other PDs know there is a rule about this, and know they're breaking it, if they do, and that they will end up sued. Where most really fall down is not sending someone in jail or prison to the hospital.
