Doing a public service here. While possible to ferment garlic cloves alone, the result is rather meh. Worse than that, the entire time bulk fermentation is going on, it produces a smell you don't want to have in your home. Also, color turns to an unappealing green but eventually to amber later. 😞

And because we can't eat them all within two weeks, they now go in the freezer! Washed, dried, and removed the stalks. Flash-freezing them on a tray first, then putting them in a container- just like we do with pelmeni!

Harvest before bad weather, because my migraine barometer told me so .. only a handful left to still ripen now 🌶️

It's Hokkaido time! If you aren't going to fetch one from the stores right this moment, you are missing out! We put fresh Rosemary and Thyme from the balcony after backing them with potatoes in frozen goose fat left over from last year.

Holy shit these orange Habanero are even sharper now. We took them inside each night since temperatures dropped down to 5C or so for a week now. We let the Cayenne out and that MF is still blooming ..

This little Fido jar of orange Habanero has cost us so much pain and suffering on the balcony. The chilies are now resting in a 3% salt brine. Hope it was worth it. They smell so gorgeous. Will update about the progress of the fermentation. Stay tuned.

Why do I love these Cayenne peppers? Everyone else already packed and went home and these are like: "Hey boss, can I stay? I still got work to do". Look at all these flowers! It's down to 9°C at nights now and this plant already produced plenty but seems like on a roll- Of course you can stay!

Cayenne still blooming in middle of September

Looks like Android development is completely fucked now. I only tried to update Rattlegram and maybe improve the waterfall. But no. Unless someone wants to help me fix this fucking shit, there won't be an update for another year until Google forces me to update. Can't waste my time like this.

Now you know why traffic lights are like that 🚦

Some green and a fully red Habanero. One just started to turn red from green and looks like a traffic light.

Ahmet Inan @xdsopl.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Goodbye, cruel world! No, seriously- this was a tasty Habanero. It was sharp but not as sharp as I hoped. 😋

Habanero that had a week to ripen after it turned orange

Occasional reminder that telephones are over. It was already over a couple of years ago but now with all the AI robo-callers, it is truly over. The reason why I still have a phone number is because of the law. Otherwise I would cut the cord. Yes, ringer is disabled. music.youtube.com/watch?v=WoEw...

Took apart my beloved Cherry MC 1000 mouse so you won't have to. The wheel started to skip so I took a look inside. It has a mechanical switch based Kailh 11 rotary encoder inside. If you need more pics or want me to measure things, please reach out.

Just awoke to a vivid dream where I saw a sleeping grizzly bear on the sidewalk. While passing it on the other side of the road and walking away backwards from it, it awoke and saw me. When it started chasing, I woke up. Phew.

Summer is over isn't it? We had to wrap the Habaneros in bubble wrap for the night. Night temperatures dropped to 9C. 😩

Yumm! 😋 Only Cayenne and Okra is from the balcony. The rest is store bought. Not going to have sheep and potatoes on the balcony. Or should we? 🐑🥔

Made mac and cheese with evaporated milk using a 1:1:1 ratio. Don't do it. It's a glorious mess of cream with a side of pasta. Next time I will do it with a 2:1:1 ratio: 250g pasta, 125g evaporated milk and 125g cheese (I used Cheddar) 🧑‍🍳

Looks like I am going to use Merkle trees for erasure coding over the next modem. Makes things much simpler (no signatures needed), allows self-healing, as anyone can produce missing chunks once they have the whole message and a logarithmic overhead with the count of chunks, so it's not that bad. 😅

Playing with Schnorr signatures, another thing scratched off the bucket list. Seriously, don't attempt this at home. Balls deep in complex M31 prime field math on the unit circle right now. Might have to go M127 to make this a serious project. github.com/xdsopl/schnorr

Trying something new with the wheat and millet starters: Instead of transferring to fridge after four hours of feeding, I transfer them immediately. Then I let them "wake up" outside the fridge for six hours before use. Shifts some things around but makes the starter much more stable in the fridge.

000

Ahmet Inan @xdsopl.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

Comparing the encoding and decoding speed of my GF(65536) (CRS), GF(65537) (CFE) and GF(2^31-1) (CME) based erasure coding tools on a Raspberry Pi. CRS is SIMD accelerated LUTs while CFE and CME use prime fields. CME is faster, as Mersenne prime field fits the CPU better than the Fermat prime field.
