Just played past the first dungeon of Zelda TP via Dusklight, and probably for the first time since the game originally released on GameCube here. Should've replayed it much sooner, tho on the other hand, that means I don't remember too much about it... so I'm going in semi-blind, which is nice!

btw, wrt Yurucamp & scanlations: Shoutout to SiberOwl and the "Translator's Travel Guide" they'd attach to their scanlation releases back then! I totally get why, but it's a shame the official English release didn't do something more involved like this, in addition to their translation notes...

Been playing some "comfort food" as I'm still sick. And now knowing that my SC64 is not faulty, but the random crashes in the game were a regression in the cart's menu program tripping anti-piracy checks, or something. ...tho the comfort food's suddenly got a strange aftertaste to it? :P

Seen plenty of these "the 9 [things] that shaped who I am" around, just did these ones myself. Some very obvious choices, some relatively obvious ones if you've known me for a while, some choices I'd probably have done differently on a different day. (It's complicated. It always is.)
My 9 games: Zelda OoT, Pokemon Silver, Sim City 2000, Zelda LA, Etrian Odyssey, Metroid Prime, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, F-Zero X, Pokemon Legends ArceusMy 9 anime: Digimon Adventure, Yurucamp, Lucky Star, Dragon Ball, Bocchi the Rock, Digimon Frontier, Hyouka, Madoka Magica, Onimai

Have a random photo of most of my N64 games as I look through some games and stuff I'm trying to sort and store in my mess of a place... Fun fact: That "Xploder64" cartridge is what I did my earliest Zelda OoT PAL code hacking with, over 20 years ago, and *should* still contain all of them.

Also, that voltage regulator or transistor or whatever that is with the heatsink next to the big cap must've gotten pretty damn hot over time, considering the discoloration of the shell and PCB!

Considering how the ROM banks are laid out, this ~should~ be pretty helpful...

Three ROM offsets, a RAM address, and ta-da~ This'll help validate the data I'd gathered with the crude pattern-matching-scanner-thingy *and* the Mesen Lua script, which in turn should eventually result in a (hopefully!) complete list of stuff that needs to be translated.

Hacked together a VERY crude pattern-matching-tilemap-dumper-thingy for Mr. Driller for WSC, just to help me figure out where there's data in ROM that needs translating, and where in the code it's referenced. And yeah, so, I guess I'm now VERY slowly working on a translation patch for the game?

Another #RandomGameSaturday, and an N64 game today - Ganbare Goemon: Neo Momoyama Bakufu no Odori, aka Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon! Pretty sure I got this at my childhood favorite game store, tho many years later; also had this German guide booklet from 64Gamer magazine on the right in the box.

A somewhat late #RandomGameSaturday post, but with a game that's pretty nostalgic to me: Anno 1602 for Windows 9x, in the Königs-Edition re-release that also includes its expansion and additional missions. Good memories of playing this over LAN with my dad when visiting him in the early 2000s.

Second image is a mockup, but based on what I've learned about the game's innards, one I'm pretty confident I can actually implement... (translation/localization subject to change, because my Japanese is pretty damn poor!) [well, at least I'm not just letting a machine "translate" it :P]

Playing around with the camera & the new thought bubble emote actor~ Still mostly just throwing stuff at the wall, seeing what sticks, but I do have a bit of an overall plan in my head, too. #gamedev #indiegame -- I guess, tho I'm very, VERY much a newbie with no ambitions besides having fun :3

Started working on the window/menu/dialog/etc handling stuffs, tho it's just basic mockups so far. It does already assemble the windows from the border tiles at runtime tho, so it's not like I'm just drawing two fixed size images here :P
Screenshot of FRLG-RPG-game-overworld-test-thing with new text box and menu window mockups, the box at the bottom reads: "Hello world, this is a mockup of a dialog box, tho assembled and drawn at runtime.", while the fake menu has the options MOCKUP, MENU, WINDOW, THING, GOES and HEREImage of window border tiles as used by the program; it looks kinda like a stylized rectangular eye like this, with a dark gray outline, lighter gray inner part that's thicker on the left/right side, and white center part

Improved *and* simplified the NPC scripting stuffs in my FRLG-inspired RPG game test thing, by way of a library with a nicer coroutine implementation that's actually using async/await - github.com/FuriousOrang... My code's still kinda crude and unorganized, but hey, OG Red/Green were buggy, too 😅
Cropped screenshot of the current C# code that makes the NPC walk around the building in my FRLG-inspired-RPG-game-test-thing:

await Scripts.WalkSteps(this, 6, Point2.Left, WalkingSpeed);
await Scripts.WalkSteps(this, 5, Point2.Down, WalkingSpeed);
await Scripts.WalkSteps(this, 6, Point2.Right, WalkingSpeed);
await Scripts.WalkSteps(this, 5, Point2.Up, WalkingSpeed);Cropped screenshot of C# code with script helper function ex. for moving actors around or waiting for a given number of seconds:

public static async Coroutine WaitForSeconds(double seconds)
{
	if (seconds != 0.0)
		await Coroutine.FromTask(Task.Delay(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(seconds)));
	else
		await Coroutine.Yield();
}

public static async Coroutine WalkSteps(ActorBase actor, int steps, Point2 direction, float speed, double delay = 0.0)
{
	actor.CurrentMovementSpeed = speed;

	for (var i = 0; i < steps; i++)
	{
		while (!actor.CanMove(direction) || actor.IsLocked)
			await Coroutine.Yield();

		actor.TargetMapLocation = actor.CurrentMapLocation + direction;
		await WaitAfterMovementDone(actor, delay);
	}
}

public static async Coroutine WaitAfterMovementDone(ActorBase actor, double delay = 0.0)
{
	while (actor.CurrentMapLocation != actor.TargetMapLocation)
		await WaitForSeconds(delay);
}

Welcome to 2015('s workstation laptop VRAM sizes)! ...and while I personally love this laptop - a ThinkPad P50, my daily driver -, 4 GB of VRAM on new cards in 2026 is ridiculous, especially since I wholly expect games to still target 16 GB of VRAM or whatever is the high-end, enthusiast spec!
