The Karp lab had a fantastic day at the Midwest C. elegans meeting last week with 6 undergrads and 3 grad students presenting. Thanks to @nickburton.bsky.social and the other organizers for all their work. It’s such a pleasure to get together and talk about science.
Eleven Karp lab members posing for the camera in an auditorium, with a wall of windows behind them on the left and wood paneling behind them on the right. Above their heads is a large sculpture by Dale Chihuly, of mostly blue glass spheres shaped into double helix.

Congratulations to Karp lab student Vusani Ntuli who won the Best Poster Award at the Central Michigan University Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium yesterday! I’m so proud of him and of the other 5 Karp lab presenters.

Congratulations to Dr. Matt Wirick for successfully defending his PhD on the role of daf-16/FOXO in regulating stage-specific seam cell fate in the dauer life history of C. elegans!
A man, the student, in a light blue button down shirt and a woman, the proud PI, in a white shirt with a black and white flowered jacket and black respirator, smiling for the camera. A man on a stage in front of a title slide. Photo taken from a distance in the audience, so the backs of some heads are seen. Text on the slide “daf-16/FOXO regulates stage -specific seam cell fate in the dauer life history of Caenorhabditis elegans. Matthew J. Wirick, PhD defense seminar, July 25 2025”

Something joyful after the worm meeting. Karp lab F2s came to visit! Three of my students are parents, one with twins :)
Five smiling adults holding four babies are posing for a photo in front of a large window. Three babies are very small, about 2 months old. The fourth is a toddler.

So much great science at #worm25. Best of all was being with the C. elegans community, including hanging out with current and former members of the Greenwald and Ambros labs, where I was lucky enough to get my training. I’m so grateful for you all.

This meeting is wonderful for trainees. Nearly the whole lab attended.
Nine people (the Karp lab) smile for the camera in an atrium. A blue piece of art depicting a DNA helix hangs over head. A woman wearing a mask and a man stand in front of blue couches in an atrium. Both people smile for the camera. A large DNA helix composed of blue and purple balls hangs above their heads.

I appreciate this message from my department posted on social media. (They are not yet on BlueSky).
The Department of Biology wants to reassure everyone that we will continue to promote inclusivity, our policies are not changing, we will not tolerate any discrimination, and we value and support all students.

Three Karp lab members presented their work at the CMU Biology Undergraduate Research Symposium yesterday. They did a fantastic job! This is always such a fun event.
A woman with blond hair and a brown jacket explains her poster to a group of onlookers, three men in suits. Behind them is a long hallway with more posters and people milling about. A young man with brown hair and a black sweater points at a figure on his poster. We see the backs of three people listening in the foreground. A woman with blond hair and a patterned shirt appears to be pointing at her poster and explaining to the three onlookers. One of the onlookers is centered int the foreground: we see long blond hair and a green jacket. The other two onlookers are on the right.

#HiSciSky! I am a #Celegans geneticist at Central Michigan University. I am new here and still figuring out how this place works. This was a fun way to start.
