Had some flash flooding last night in Grants. The ripple marks are in sediment deposited on the road above a culvert. We had 1+ inches of rain in less than an hour on top of the mesa. Gravity took charge after that. #nmwx

So, my games are just a little old. I think the median release date is the 1990’s. my9games.com/en/s/56c7bb0...

I've heard reports of snow on Mauna Kea as #Lala passes through. This cross section of reflectivity from PHKM on the north side suggests that's it's snowing HARD. We now have terrain in malpais.app thanks to @mapterhorn.com malpais.app#v=3&s=PHKM&m...

@stormscale.io Since there's a live Flash Flood Emergency, I thought I'd share how my app handles the IBW tags. Basically, Emergencies float to the top of the warning list and the borders are very thick. I'm open to suggestions/comments since I'm not a UX guru. malpais.app#v=3&s=KJKL&m...

Recently, I added support for select MRMS products so I could understand the flash flood risk. Here's the recent QPE/FFG ratio for the Cibola county storm, where the ratio's >1, the radar estimated precip exceeds the estimated threshold for flash flooding. malpais.app#v=3&m=l2&p=R... #nmwx

I've been watching this storm from the kitchen window for the past hour or so, it's been a great lightning producer. On the 3D radar view from malpais.app, you can clearly see how multiple updrafts are feeding the same stratiform layer. Really neat. #nmwx

It's new feature Friday for malpais.app! You can now look at the last 5-30 minutes of GLM lightning flash locations as an overlay. It's useful for assessing storm intensity trends and motion at a glance. Just go to the Fire/Lightning tab on the left and click the Enable toggle under Lightning.

If wildfires are your area of concern, malpais.app has more features for you. In addition to the RAWS data, we have incidents and perimeter data from WFIGS so you can know where the current fires are. malpais also includes federal agency/tribal jurisdiction boundaries.

Of course, once one has surface observations, one would like to analyze them. You can use objective analysis techniques (Barnes/OI/Cressman) for temperature, dewpoint, winds, RH, and altimeter. We have even have streamlines available for winds. (3/x)
120
Rob Carver @wundersooner.com · 17/06/2026
You have the ability to plot current METARS courtesy of AWC and/or the current RAWS. At high levels, RAWS are colored by RH, and METARS are flight conditions. Once you zoom in, the station model appears and if you click on the station, a detailed popup appears. (2/x)

With TS #arthur, now is a good time to announce some new features for malpais.app, my Nexrad viewer app. You can now load current surface obs (METAR/RAWS), plot the objective analysis of T/Td/RH/altimeter/winds, and for the wildfire monitors, we have incident locations/perimeters. (1/x)

It's an air-mass thunderstorm kind of day here in Cibola County, NM. Some orographic convection tried to form over Mt. Taylor, but just didn't click. The biggest storm right now is over Acoma Pueblo lands. KABX L2 data visualized using malpais.app

So, a few updates for malpais.app 1) You can have up to 4 panels at once to look at different moments or Level 3 products at the same time. 2). You can load RHIs (range height indicator, a cross section along the radar beam. (This is from a weak storm over my house today)

To help orientate yourself, malpais.app includes US county borders, interstate highways, airport locations, airspace boundaries, VOR locations and runways. malpais has been tested on Chrome and Safari on both desktop and mobile browsers. (Honestly, desktop is better for now).

In addition to the radar data, malpais.app includes displays of the current severe weather related watches and warnings from the NWS and the current aviation hazards: SIGMETS, G-AIRMETS, and AIRMETS, from the Aviation Weather Center.

malpais.app can be used to look at realtime Level 2 or Level 3 data products, or you can use it to look at archived radar data. If you think a storm looks like something from May 3, 1999, you can punch in the date and look at the historical data.

I'm happy to announce the launch of malpais.app, a free NEXRAD/TDWR radar viewer that lives in your browser. malpais downloads Level 2 or Level 3 data from NOAA's Open Data Dissemination archives and renders it in WebGL on your desktop or mobile device. For free.
