yes, playing a public service and being a public service are different things. pretty sure both were true for my grandfather's small-town paper. he was a publisher, a reporter and set the press. paper's key function wasn't "make more money for investors." it was news and events in the community.

nice explanation. news publications are businesses, yes. they are also a public service we don't hear that so much subscriptions are predicted income investors like that. not great for public need-to-know. i'd like to see a not-track-me option. day-old papers were free. same day were not.

i quit years ago. what helped the most was having something to chew on that i could also hold. 🍭children's lollipops and suckers did it. i liked the lemon and lime flavors. i could have one whenever i wanted and keep them in my pocket. jellybeans were good too.

Two years ago, I was looking at a refi maybe next year. I'd considered having to pay a little more than what I have now in interest, but it would clear several things and help me fund others. Planning. What I couldn't foresee is the dumpster fire we have now. No way I can think about it at 7%.

Gasoline will have a big impact on September CPI. EIA data show Sep YoY gasoline inflation is 36%. Diesel (not a line item in CPI) will be worse, at 68% YoY. (Diesel demand is half of gasoline by volume; shows up more on the PPI side, and/or embedded in inflation of other goods with lag in CPI)
