Incredible to see THE FIST OF MEMORY featured as one of October's best sci-fi and fantasy books from LitHub! lithub.com/time-travel-...

Wole Talabi, The Fist of Memory
(DAW, October 27)
In this first contact technothriller, a mysterious spaceship carrying an alien hive mind called the Irunmole appears above Nigeria. As the extraterrestrials prepare their arrival, down on the surface several strangers find their fates linked. Itumeleng is a South African astronomer who has put aside his family’s faith and traditions, yet it’s those visions that aid him in identifying the Irunmole in the first place. Meanwhile, conflicted assassin Tope takes another typical job from witchdoctor Baba, only for everything to go sideways and send her on the run—right in the path of Itumeleng, who also recognizes her from his visions. Add in another assassin, obsessed with the singular memory of the title, and you have a thrilling new take on first contact.

When people ask me what kind of books/stories I write, instead of giving a long answer, I just describe my new novel. Its the purest distillation of all my interests. The Fist Of Memory is an SF thriller about a Nigerian assassin & a South African astronomer an alien object heading towards Earth.

Yes I know we aren't supposed to read reviews or whatever but sometimes a friend sends me a screenshot of someone talking about my latest novel on Goodreads and well...

Image showing text "You know how on rare occasions you can actually feel a book rewiring your brain? Maybe your internal monologue starts out as “Oh, this is ambitious” and then develops into “Holy shit, [insert author name] is kinda making this work” and then you finish, sit back and think “Wow, they pulled it off. I didn’t know you could do that.”

The Fist of Memory is the latest in a very short list of books to take me through that ride."

Just going to leave this here. I wrote in 2023.

But I must note my reservations about the use of AI in the creative
industry more generally, given what we have seen with other generative
AI tools and how they are being developed and applied.
I am an engineer, and I always will be, so making tools to achieve
objectives is a fundamental part of my DNA. As it is for all of humanity.
My optimism in science and technology as boxes for tools to make a
better world remains high. My dream for AI is one of enablement. As
tools to do the things humans shouldn’t do, or don’t want to do or simply
can’t do. As a tool for external human cognition and the expansion of
human potential. Not mimicry. Not theft. Not replacement. Not commodiöcation of things that bring joy and meaning to our lives like creativity.

The initial framing of the study intrigued me as an engineer. The discovery and results convinced me thay this was not the way. Reflecting on the experience, I wrote this in 2023.

In 2018 I ran my first half marathon on a dare. I struggled but did it - in 3hrs. I've run a lot since but haven't done another 21km. Last Sunday I finally did. And finished in just over 2 hours. It was great to challenge myself and be one of the 40k people who helped raise $1.6 million for charity

Just watched Gladiator again and I have 3 thoughts: - its has structural and thematic problems but they're obscured by the magnitude of Maximus's charisma. - Djimon Honsou is great in it. - I can't believe Gladiator 2 actually tried to gaslight us into thinking Lucius was Maximus's son. Total BS.
