I don't think it's good for presentation style to emotionally inform you about a topic before and while facts are being presented. Because God, I hate watching a YouTuber constantly edit in bong rip sounds over video of catching joe rogen in a lie. It makes good points come off as unreliable.

If the editing tells you how to feel, then you're likely to either accept or reject the core point based on emotional responses rather than assessment of the substantive facts presented. And don't misunderstand me here, you can have an emotional opinion or judgement from facts alone.

The more emotionally charged information delivery is, the less people are allowed to react to the information on their own. That's something I detest because so much of our mediascape is about passively watching and repeating the opinions of others.

My primary problem with all of this is mostly storytelling. Storytelling is fundamentally an emotional art, which is great for fiction, but I don't think it's great for telling people about things happening in the current day.

But it also actively robs the work of simply informing people. Instead of having a conclusion where the facts are stark and laid out at the end, you're informed every step of the way with these tools about how you SHOULD be feeling disgusted or stunned BEFORE you've even heard the facts.

This is done with traditional methods of editing. By layering a video or podcast with things that tell you how to feel, using music, sound effects, visual effects, and edits to inform the viewer that you're listening to something sinister. This method of presentation emotionally charges the video.

If those facts show a clear link between things, leading to something exploitative or inhumane, then yes I'm going to disapprove at least if not more. However, it's possible to take cut dry facts and make them wet via presentation.

One thing about my demeanor is that, with media, I do not respond well to emotional editing, sound design, and overall appeals to ethos specifically via route of pathos. I understand emotional appeal, but it just falls flat for me. I like hard facts, cut and dry.

YouTube is a huge platform so it never surprises me when a large creator I've never seen suddenly pops up in my feed on a different social media site because of a new essay they published. When this happens though I'm frequently reminded of why the YT algorithm doesn't recommend me lots of stuff.
