RAF veteran, Christ’s Hospital housemaster, Carcanet Press cofounder, poet, author and at 74 a university lecturer. Devoted to Laurence, Ali, Jill and all his friends. Private cremation at his request.

Tbf it’s your technical department’s fault. I rang them and said what kind of person I was, what kind of typist I was, what I liked, and what I didn’t like. And the Durgod was recommended to me. It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever bought.

Durgod. It got to keep its own name, which I love. (It’s the Taurus K320.) It really is a god. You might scroll past it, as it doesn’t brag and it’s well-priced. Pause, because it’s fabulous. I write long reports on this and never notice the time. Fast. Very. And willing—like riding a thoroughbred.

I was ill for the whole of January, but finally got to see my friend and former husband in his cute village in Nottinghamshire. He’s 96. To make him laugh, I took him a Valentine’s Day card. (We’ve been divorced for 29 years.) He was devastated because he hadn’t got me anything. So funny.
