I've been going bald since my early 20s. (I'm now 50+.) For the last 16 years I have spent a lot of time with a shaved head. Yet, whenever I emerge from the shower, pool, lake, ocean, etc., I brush my hands over my scalp. Self -- just stop it! There's no water trapped up there.

I propose using two different terms from here on out. AI (artificial intelligence) was used to design this process or AcI (actual intelligence) was used to design this process

Ran across my first automated/driverless semi today and by "ran across" I mean it almost ran us off the road. This has gone too far. A car is a one-ton machine that can cause problems at low speeds. A semi is a 40-ton machine at high speed. This is not ok.

It was amazing. The students really spoke the truth. (Hmmmm. . . I wonder where they learned that, Dr. Neuhaus).

SO, basically, I am trying to get the AI machine to do what the people I work with do well. I have added work by providing rounds of feedback to a computer. I am training someone else's product to "do better" without being compensated. All this for a text that is boring as can be and not my voice.

I am being asked to provide feedback to AI as if it were a student. I am trying to get AI to do what my students do in peer review. I am trying to get AI to do what I trust my colleagues to do except they do it WAY better since they bring their own ideas and experiences and even others experiences.

As we read about "fine-tuning" an AI prompt it became clear that I could use those comments (but hopefully better). How might this be more engaging? Considering the audience, how might this be more fitting to their needs? How might the clarity of this piece be enhanced based on the reader?

I have taught writing for 26 years and I will admit I keep a comment bank connected with assignments. I copy, paste, and adapt for the big issues that I have a good sense are coming. I also respond as a reader to the specific ideas that excite me and get me thinking.

I'm taking a 4 week professional development course on the use of AI in the classroom. I'm halfway through and my frustration is growing.

My favorite possession in the world is a chalkboard. Why? It has many of the songs we dance to in the kitchen while making dinner. It also has the menu and scores from when our daughters demolished us at family games. I know how lucky I am.

Our @drtink.bsky.social Tucson garden experiment is coming along. This year the tomatoes are doing better, but we have added roses, rosemary, plums, figs, meyer lemons, and beds for herbs and other yumminess. I'm also in PCC's Garden to Table class. Wish us luck. Also fun bougainvillea. Yay plants!

Next year, when Spring Break arrives, I am going to create a bracket for the things I think I will accomplish. There will be cleaning, reading, catching up on various things, and getting sick. The number one seed will be napping. That is a the safest bet there is as everything else gets left undone.

@drtink.bsky.social made chicken meatballs great for soup or to go with the sauce we are woking on. Our house smells so good!

@drtink.bsky.social is making a double ground chicken mix to get the herbs fully incorporated for chicken meatballs. This is gonna be good. Spring Break has been great so far!

I have learned so many amazing things in culinary school. Lamb dishes, sauces, and much more. Right now, though, being able to buy four whole chickens for $20 and knowing how to break them down into wings, tenders, quarters, breasts, legs, thighs, grinding meat, and chicken stock means a ton.
Chicken cut in parts and sealed. Stock pot full of vegie leftovers, and chickens bones.

Here's what was for dinner with the quick sauce. Egg-plant parm.

A tale of two sauces. The bottom sauce is quick. Takes about 1.5 hours and is built with powders and cans. It works, but it's quick. The top sauce needs at least one more day to simmer and feel the love. The quick sauce is for dinner and the long sauce is for everything else. Yay everything else!

It was the final for the Savory Cuisine class today. I present to you, Red Snapper En Papillote with asparagus and roasted veggies and stuffed pork chop in a demi glace with béchamel potatoes, topped, again, with asparagus. Also, New England Clam Chowder. Definitely a fun way to end the class.

This year we took trimmings and are working on Draco 2.0. If it works, watch for a post next year offering up new plants for other folx as we prune and shape.

This March we have an honest-to-goodness dragon fruit. We even had to buy a trellis. For scale, Draco (that's their name) would have just hit the bottom rung.

As for all, it's been a rough few weeks. However, I just got to spend a solid 20 minutes (probably more) watching butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds dance around our young Meyer lemon tree. I chatted with the neighbors and enjoyed it with my partner @drtink.bsky.social. That was so restorative.

There's a real benefit to culinary school, particularly when you grow up in a household that wasn't well off. I look in the fridge and say, "What leftovers do I want for lunch? Duck, osso bucco, braised ribs, or perhaps turkey scallopini?" The answer was duck with an apricot compote.

I urge people to also remeber the amount of classes that are taught by hard working folx on one, two, or three-year contracts. Likewise, consider what it means to teach on a semester-by-semester basis. Threatening someone's livelihood has classroom consequences. Those proportions matter as well.

Just like last year, now that the other tournament is done with its most recent attention grab, we can turn to an important one. US v Finland in the quarters. Goin' for the three-peat!

Whoot for the US Selects in the Spengler Cup. Losing in the finals to the host team when you supposed to be happy with a participation trophy is amazing. Especially when the game is tied with just over 4:30 left in regulations. Now focusing on the World Junior Championships (and BG hockey of course)

One of my favorite things in the world is taking three trips to carry scratch made food into a classroom for students and only needing a single trip to carry everything out after they have eaten it all.

It is clear that Micheal Meyers never went to culinary school. If he had, he would have announced loudly that he was behind Kara Strode (and his other victims) with a knife by practically yelling "behind knife." Kinda loses something that way.

Yesterday we worked on espagnole sauce on steak. I made mine with asparagus. Not gonna lie. It was really good. Today, though, that turned into a steak, asparagus, potato hash cooked in clarified butter. Not gonna lie. It was even better. Nothing like a flavorful, crispy (yet fluffy) potatoes.
