I love the Mohawk Trail Massachusetts Scenic Byways sign. Like yes, this is exactly how I feel when I'm on a scenic byway.

But the visual impact is remarkably quick. By August, 2024, nearly all beech trees within a mile from the visitor center had lost their leaves. Depending on the maturity and health of an infected tree, it can take 5 to 10 years for it to die.

Predicting its spread is difficult because outbreaks have occurred several states apart without a clear sense of how the nematodes traveled so far. It spreads through openings in the bark. It was reported in my county in 2021. It appeared in the state park I worked at by late June, 2024.

Healthcare support got the lowest score of any group, which is funny or deeply concerning depending on how hard you think that field can push workers to use chatbots. I'm dying to know the dredge operator task Copilot can do. Could do <0.1% of tasks, did 98% of it, needed help almost all the time.

Also, even for Interpreters & Translators, AI was usable in 98% of tasks, of which did 88.3% of the tasks given, of which 56.8% it did a "moderate" amount of the work involved. i.e. The chatbot could "do" most of the work, but needed people about half the time. As a linguist, I expected...better?

I was looking for info about ferries and checked what else was in the news that day. From December 15, 1860 issue of the Springfield Republican, early in the Secession Crisis. Sure enough, the paper quotes an Alabama commissioner citing "an abolition government" as their motive to secede.

In rural Massachusetts, there's the Route 2 Standout in Gill, overpass standouts over I-91 (changes location daily/weekly, but always in Franklin County and organized by the same group). The Historical Society of Greenfield shared the photo below of their city's No Kings II Rally.
People dressed in white togas with red, blue or purple sashes march down the road carrying torches made of duct tape and red and yellow tissue paper. In the background, three people hoist up a lady liberty dressed in white with colorful braids and a purple, white and green sash reading "COURAGE."

1890s McKinley-posting. McKINLEY PRICES ARE UPON US!
Political cartoon from Puck magazine. Railroad magnate Jay Gould lectures a laborer and farmer, saying "If the new tariff makes clothing cost more, you'll have to get along with one suit instead of two! If you can't afford to patronize a barber, cut your own hair. If you can't afford to keep a horse, you'll have to pull the plough yourself. If you can't afford to keep your last pair of twins, you'll be obliged to parts with them. If you can't afford a fire, you must keep warm by violent exercise. If you can't afford to buy a turkey all alone, club in with your next-door neighbor, each pay half, and then have a raffle to see which family shall eat it. McKinley prices are upon us! A galaxy of Gouldians for the laboring classes. end quote. Above each statement is a sketch of a family following Gould's advice, including a baby holding dumbbells, the farmer with a yoke on his neck while his wife pushes a plow, and the laborer haphazardly cutting his hair.

These AI colorized "remasters" of pre-war B-roll would really have us believe the entire world was a rust brown, eh?
Video titled "Detroit, Michigan nineteen-thirties in color 60 FPS, remastered withsound design added. Video frame shows a row of buildings that have been re-colored to be stone gray or a dark, rusty brown. All signs and awnings are either black, brown or red with white text. There is a row of nineteen thirties cars, all colorized to black or maroon. A cloud of dust or exhaust can be seen in the distance as cars drive on the road.

Came across this report by a small Massachusetts town's Board of Health in 1920. Sound familiar? I compared that year's reports by the board of health and truancy officer and to say the town was the healthiest on record is an exaggeration. Reports from 1917 to 1919 are missing.
Gentlemen: I hereby submit my annual report for the Board of Health, town of South Hadley. In the early part of the winter of 1920 we had our second influenza epidemic, but with that exception, the town has experienced the healthiest year in the history of the Board of Health. There has been very little contagious disease of any kind. During the summer the infant mortality was very low; and since the fall, sickness in general throughout the town has been much less than it has for a number of years. In fact, with the exception of a small epidemic of chicken-pox there has been no contagious disease worth speaking of.

We were in traffic for 16 hours and my body still hurts from the drive, but seeing the eclipse in totality was priceless. We drove up to the source of the Connecticut River. Since most of our route had no wi-fi, we checked out a ten CDs from the library and listened to them along the way.
Two dweebs in the snow looking up at the sun with eclipse glasses on.The Connecticut River, as it appears in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. The river is about 12 feet across and is surrounded by rocky, snow-covered banks and conifers.

pov: it's the 1920s and you have one additional option
collage of images associated with the Ferrer movement and free schools. Images include a photo of a child in a tunic playing the violin next to very tall plants, a logo depicting a naked person dancing with a dog, a book titled "linoleum cuts by children of the modern school, stelton, new jersey", a photo of a child and two teenagers in a field in new jersey. one shirtless teen is wearing a straw hat and holding a rifle downwind while smiling. another is wearing a dress, flower crown and sticking her middle finger out at the camera. the smaller child is holding a very long pitch fork. A more recent photo shows an adult at a table with three children who look tired or distracted. Another recent photo shows the home of a Ferrer movement teacher, with custom plaster reliefs of a swan, stork, and industrial workers beneath the windows on the exterior.

From Wikipedia: The designation "Sooner" initially had a very negative connotation. While "Boomers" were merely expressing "pioneer spirit" in their desire to take and settle former Indian territory, Sooners were essentially stealing from other white settlers by cheating on the claim requirements to get better land.

"We can make you a groverhaus"
Facebook post from C.E. Pontz Sons from August 29, 2023 at 9:00 AM reading "We can turn that frown [frown emoji] upside down [smile emoji]. Below is an image of a before and after comparison of a house's backyard. The before image looks like a standard ugly suburban house built on a slight hill. The after image shows a new deck that does not match the style of the home, an addition on the first floor that is on stilts similar to the deck. There are two pools and a fire pit surrounded by possibly granite and entirely new grass. In the background, the neighborhood appears entirely different.

Putting this out for history skeeters of #WMass. The Bellamy House was the home of utopian socialist* author, Edward Bellamy. Over several years, the house underwent renovations that limited the public's access. This talk is to show the results of that work & the site's value to researchers.
Flyer for a lecture organized by the Chicopee Historical Society called "State of the Bellamy House: Jason Amos on the Renovation of the Bellamy House and an overview of its collections." The lecture will be on Wednesday, September 20, in the Chicopee Public Library's Bazan Community Room, 449 Front Street. Join us at 6:30 PM. Learn more about this event on the CHS website: https://chicopee-historical-society.jimdosite.com/events/
