Wondering how/if the latest news will affect college applications to Cornell and other various universities this month. I imagine the quality of applicants might suffer but the numbers won't.

One thing i've learned during my career is people reflect who they report to - their words, thoughts, clothes, actions. You can influence people to a degree, but they will always fall back to the behaviors the gatekeeper values/exhibits to attain opportunity, promotions, etc.

Why do the AI companies speak so frequently of the billions of deaths to come but don't ever speak about the billions of lives potentially saved? What the hell kind of AI are they creating back there?!?

So the AI companies that take everyone's data, steal people's life's work, raise energy prices, drain local water supplies, disrupt lands & add to noise, heat, air pollution do not care about anyone's safety. I'm pretty sure they are not slowing down out of the goodness of their hearts.

The unacknowledged truth about today's AI is that you have to be smart to use it. It requires rigorous, vigilant, informed guidance to wield it successfully. If you lack critical thinking skills, are lazy with it, or anthropomorphize, you're likely going to hurt yourself or others using it.

LLMs won't kill us. It'll be the people using LLMs that do. Agents could take down some software in some critical infrastructure. But remember, those agents are set in motion by humans. I'd like to see some Accountable Intelligence. How about we make that the new AI?
000
Pete Aven @wpaven.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
LLMs don't work in physical space. They are language based and lossy. LLMs are like 20-25% of the AI pie. AI has so much farther to go.
000
Pete Aven @wpaven.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The media's sci-fi framing is harmful and distracting. It's the people at the AI companies that need to be shut down for some period of time and/or contained. The LLM on it's own isn't harming anyone.
000
Pete Aven @wpaven.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Large Language Models (LLMs) do not wake up, make independent plans, or act on their own initiative. Online we are just living in the petrie dish of some AI company's scientist's experiment.
000
Pete Aven @wpaven.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Media reports on AI as if it's this out of control, separate, independent, autonomous entity, but it's not. Developers at the AI companies put these LLMs to work giving them prompts, tools & goals. Agents act upon on instructions provided by humans!

AI isn't going to end civilization. It will be unrestrained, privileged white men misusing AI, either consciously or ignorantly, that causes catastrophe. They'll just use their privilege to blame the problem they created for any disaster and to shield themselves from any consequence.

What's wild is CEOs can come out and say "AI is coming for all the jobs and by 20XX we are doomed!" and investors are like: "Hell yeah! I want in on that action!" ( Spoiler alert: It's not coming for all the jobs, doom is more like a long defeat, they are speaking to investors. )

What if I told you that all the fear mongering about AI from CEOs was to get regulations passed to help create an unfair playing field that favors incumbents so we have to continue to pay a high price for AI while efforts of other researchers and open source companies get stymied?
