David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 6hThis may well be the most difficult thing I've been asked to do in a long time. Will an incorrectly used 'yours sincerely' instead of 'yours faithfully' or vice versa suffice? 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 6hAll I ask is to know that we weren't sold out cheaply. Let it at least to have been more than the price of a decent takeaway. 010
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 7hWhile you're absolutely right, I don't see how we deal with it when the alternative is treating all engagement we don't like as just artificial attempts to enrage. I know there's a middle ground but I don't see how to get there beyond just vibe and preference. 100

David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 12/10/2026For clarity, I was looking to buy a physical edition if there is one, though if there isn't I'll buy the e-books off your site. 110
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 12/10/2026I meant the books but I'd totally buy a mech if I could. 110
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Okay I'm already hooked from one snippet, where do I buy them and what are they called? 110
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Some may think this is a radical position. It is not. The practice is open fraud that simply goes unprosecuted. As the proceeds of crime it is fully within the rights of the state to seize these companies. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Leveraged buyouts need to be made illegal yesterday. And I mean that literally, we need to go retroactive with this shit and outright sieze any company bought using a leveraged buyout. 100

David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If you want to take shots at something take shots at Title IX, it's a complete shit show that chooses expediency at every turn and even when it bothers to do an investigation rather than just deciding yea or nay out of hand, it tends to hand out sentencing based on the perp's bank balance. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026And how often does he need to disclose it? That's issue I keep butting up to on that one. What proportion of his audience needs to have shifted to not knowing before he needs to reannounce? Given he went through Title IX the people around him at the time knew, he didn't dodge accountability. 100
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I don't actually have a good rebuttal to this because you're right people should be protected, and that those with power use it to prey on those without. But there surely has to come a point where we say people are able to reenter society without living in destitution. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026What I'm defending are the left wing principles I espouse. Nothing more, and perhaps more importantly, nothing less. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I honestly hope no more information does come out given the only ways that's liable to happen is the doxing of the victim or, in the worst case scenario, further victims emerge or come forwards. But we cannot proceed as if we have anything other than partial facts. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The only logical reason for him to admit culpability would be if he knew, or at least suspectts, the victim plans to come forwards. Now that could be the case, but if it isn't then it seems more reasonable to take the statement as mostly true. Admittedly people aren't always logical. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'm certainly not saying forget and I'm not saying there's an obligation to forgive either. I am saying that the appetite for a pound of flesh is unproductive in this instance. Maybe more information will emerge that contradicts his statement, and if it does I'll change my stance. 100
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I said bias. I did not say dishonesty. And I'm not saying we should trust him despite that, I'm saying it's all the information we currently have You can reject the statement in its entirety and just project what you imagine to have happened, but at least admit to yourself that's what you're doing 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'd literally never heard of the guy before all this. Also you're gonna have to explain how perpetual poverty wouldn't be a form of infinite punishment. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026You're going to have to define accountability because I don't think it means what you think it means. Because as far as I can see your idea of accountability is him wearing a sandwich board declaring his crime for the rest of his life. If people can never re-integrate then they cannot rehabilitate. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'm not excusing his crime. What he did was horrific. But you are presuming a lot of facts that are not in evidence. Is his statement suspect and likely biased? Yes. But given that there isn't any real way to get more information without just doxxing the victim it's what we have to work with. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026And you should actually believe in the principles you espouse but I guess we're both doomed to disappointment. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If you honestly think that PR statement is painting him in the best possible light then you haven't read any PR statements before this given it commits the cardinal sin of any PR statement, admitting culpability. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026On what are you basing that? As far as I'm aware the only details we have are from Geller's own apology as the victim has not come forwards (as is their right), and noone else familiar with the events has made a statement either. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Fairly constantly actually. I'm a firm believer in rehabilitation over retribution because all evidence shows it's the best way to reduce crime rates. It's one of the two big reasons I'm against the death penalty for example. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Was he insufficiently punished at the time? Yes, even he agrees with that. But he wasn't the one that set the sentence, he did what we should want people to do, turned himself in and cooperated with the investigation. If we're going to be angry then it should be at the system that gave the sentence. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Because we either believe in rehabilitation or we don't. Does that mean everyone can be rehabilitated. No. TThe first step to it is to want to change and a lot of people are simply incapable of that. But by the looks of it Jacob Geller's handling of his crime is pretty close to the platonic ideal. 100
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Because you aren't after accountability and you know it. Stop motte and bailey-ing and confront the fact the only person you're actually thinking about here is yourself. You want to indulge in petty schadenfreude rather than live your principles. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026It's hardly a whataboutism to point out your stance is fundamentally flawed and encourages recidivism. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The statement restorative justice is for the victim not the perpetrator has a bunch of issues. How it addresses murder for example. Either we believe people can change or we don't. There is no grey area on that. 000
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Then surely you should just stop talking about it then? 121
David Giles @worldofreath.bsky.social · 04/10/2026As long as we continue to treat justice as a bloodsport we're always going to be a sick society. 100
