Ive not looked for a while but i think this is quite a robust analysis and included in the risk, benefit, cost calculations and part of the reason to give to children who are also higher risk - to also help protect parents who work. Considerations Should be available

Sewers are one of the most transformational interventions to human health in history, yet they are rarely understood or recognised for their impact. So we are holding an event about them next Tuesday. In person in London or watch online! www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/events/searc...

Here’s the ‘feeling safe walking alone at night’ data from the UK measures of Wellbeing dashboard. Feeling safer than before is associated with around +0.3 life satisfaction. Quite big as having a job is +0.5. Feel safER than you did & you think your life will be even better in future

There’s no identity driven demand for it so it’s being manufactured. Painfully. Often seen better in relief from other’s take on English culture through tourism and arts.

This attention span is also why the world is baffled by things dragging on rather than being on to the next thing. Or seeing things as connected consequences.

The Englishness debate is so weird. The issue is that England, the biggest part of the union by x5, is invisible in voice & governance. Mid 2000s Regional devo might have helped and regional mayors get us a bit closer. It needs a way to have a ‘thriving English culture’ like the Wales goal.

Would be interested in this. I tend to think the MP role is three jobs 1) constituency / local comms 2) parliament / policy area 3) party and then add 4) minister dept & government role and 5) media / press national Usually not good at them all either.

The change the automotive industry is facing is massive. Not mentioned in the comparison with Australia is that South Australia seeing this coming 15 years ago did a state wide psychosocial wellbeing & resilience program so people had agency & ready to deal with the change. It used PERMA x society.

Looking at the key inputs to the wellbeing headline is fascinating. Health still being a big drag. Inclusive work too (🤯 to consider that NEETs were considered too low to be a priority until recently). GDP per head and environmental measures starting ticking back to positive

Yes. And it’s accelerating too. Searching online for things I know happened and were published even five years ago have disappeared in search.

The 23 drop off? There’s some evidence that lots of wellbeing comes from ‘pleasure’ ie type 1 fun before then v ‘purpose’ and type 2 fun before that age then switches. Those who have more ‘purpose’ earlier tend to be less happy earlier but tend to have a smoother ride later. The 27 club opposite!

This is underrated theory. Young people are always amazed when they see their country is 23 out of 144 countries in happiness they consistently expect it to be far lower if you ask them to guess first.
000
Nancy Hey @worklifeyou.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Fascinating because some of the first news coverage of happiness studies in the 80s (I’ve been sent some amazing stuff) were all about how unhappy women were in marriages.

Treatment for mental health conditions is up. These often simply went untreated in previous generations. This is a good thing. Suicide rates used to be more hidden and were still higher.
030
Nancy Hey @worklifeyou.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
And suicide rates were probably higher in the 90s

Nancy Hey @worklifeyou.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
There’s a massive generational difference in age of family/household formation that extended the experience of a smaller group from earlier generations. There was always a drop in happiness around age 23. This seemed to be cost & realities of adult life hitting & a drive for/increasing purpose.
