Back in my day, they would always overrule digital on stuff like this

This is also the culmination of 2004-8 digital politics though - going direct. The dominance of the Comms Director seems over.

I think, increasingly, the big tech firms have forgone the right to be consulted on their own regulation. The public seem to be already there, so politics just needs to get over the final hump of not giving them a hearing.

You simply wouldn't write the story of a British election this way. And if Lula wins, you'll hear no more about it.

This is deeply researched and well written but still, like the majority of disinformation writing, falls into the trap of forgetting that voters are people with thoughts and judgement, rather than followbots.

I know when people usually post property listings, it's because there are some horror dolls lurking in a room somewhere, but I'm more surprised how €1.3m will buy you an Irish house where literally NO choices were made at all. www.daft.ie/for-sale/ran...

Watching Steve Hilton get smashed in California at some point on November 4th (5th or 6th or whenever) is going to be very satisfying. Watch his weird campaign ad. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGrG...

The Guardian's writing about Pedro Sanchez, as if he's some kind of unstoppable political force, is always so annoying. He runs a minority government and has been behind in the polls for years. Seems like a good bloke, but he's not a unicorn politician. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I'd like to see this happen in some form, probably packaged with some other ideas about improving the average quality of info people see. If we only highlight objections, we are indirectly helping the wrong people. Hard things are hard. So be it. www.politicshome.com/news/article...

Kinda hard to gauge Green enthusiasm for this one right now. They spent a lot on ads coming out of the gate, dropped off massively and are now picking up again a little. Ads also stopped featuring Polanski as much for a while and were more generically "green".

Yeah, that and/or lengthening regulated periods. Very doable.

I'm gonna be hopeful and assume the spending limits will come down, meaning there's a small, perhaps trivial, gap in spending between the bigger parties. Probably the most straightforward thing to do from here.

Think McAlpine is trying to get donors with that quote, rather than saying anything about the effectiveness of ads. The numbers are way out of date these days too. I'm not sure there's a number, without TV ads, big enough to do this.

It'd be democratically popular to implement rules that deal with the most anti-democratic aspects of social media.

Getting real crossroads vibes from Yerevan. The pull of Europe, Russia, the US and China all at once. At first stroll, the latter has momentum.

Thanks to Starlink on Lufthansa for those. It makes me wonder what fast, free, always on Internet will do to the social cohesion required for densely populated 500mph metal sky tubes to work.

Things I have seen people doing on their phones today on planes: - Listen to multiple eps of Candace Owens podcast - Have an X account that seemingly only follows John Cleese and Piers Corbyn - Watch an hour of bare-knuckle fighting on TikTok

Interesting mix on this last leg. Lots and lots of Mormons, plus about 20 posh English grannies going on some sort of culture tour with "Henry", who they are clearly in absolute thrall to.

The European Big Money flight from Heathrow to Frankfurt is late. The man behind me "knew he should have gone private". Different class of passenger versus my normal Cork Ryanair job.

Online, the right campaign in H&SP is Reform Vs Restore. No sign of anything from the Tories (i.e they'll get nothing from this looking forward to the Mayoral).

The nightflying was interesting enough that I read up about it - basically means the planes can start their day flying west, with the timezones, meaning they get more work out of them.

Cork to anywhere that isn't a hub or holiday spot is a bit tough, but I get to add two countries to the list here (Turkey on the way back).

Cork ✈️ Frankfurt ✈️ Yerevan. First time in that part of the world. Exciting stuff. But first, 7hrs of flights and 2x3hr layovers plus a 3.15am arrival. 🥱

One thing that Reform are doing, which makes them look more and more like any other old group of politicians, is using the same forms of "technically true, but really not" form of attack.

Like so many of these things, it just feels off, too generic, and literally no one is there. They'll launch about 16 different versions of it trying to find one that works, and someone else will probably get there first anyway.

Because we are rural types with kids, we now (to our genuine and eternal shame) have two cars, one diesel, one electric. Somehow, over time, the 2011 diesel people carrier became "my car", so here's my GoFundMe link:

There's stop/go lights on Maryborough Hill that mean it's taking 40 mins to an hour to get past there. Choked the whole area at the roundabout at the top (yet another insane decision by the M28 team, who just do not give a crap about the lives of thousands of people who need to get places).

One of these is a merciless, cold-blooded animal, incapable of understanding the lives and motivations of other people, in it only for himself. The other is Tom Cruise's weird but good portrayal of a hitman (etc etc).

Also, because of more self-distribution, musicians having to think through the mechanics and vagaries of that a lot more (e.g. what does the Spotify algo actually reward). Lots of hearsay/myth/rumour driving all that, plus Spotify/Apple with thumb on scales for some things, making analysis tough.

Changes all sorts of things - e.g. the economics of being in a band (versus solo/DJ), the length of time you get for the creative process (much shorter), the festival line-up (almost always old timers and solo acts, lots more dance music).

So, massively speculating, but it sounds as if they were waiting and watching, but a farmer coming home from a party called in the local plod, who jumped into something they weren't meant to be aware of. Quite Slow Horsey.
