The first lecture begins (after a few minutes of the ‘please wait patiently, we are trying hard to load’ emoji) with patriotic music, pictures of Xi surrounded by crowds, videos of clover-leaf mega-highways and aeroplanes taking off, a busy harbour with giant cranes and ships, a time-lapse of cities with clouds rushing past. I try to make the video bigger but when I press the maximise button I just get the same size screen in a larger black box. It reminds me of the bug-ridden party members’ app.

This impromptu American history lesson is just to say that I find Severance's positioning of Kier as a Carnegie-esque mogul—i.e. a dude who actively belittled his workforce but now has about a billion museums and libraries in his name—extremely interesting. It makes Severance's continuing rally cry against the corporatisation of our lives that much more poignant.

The way their stories moved in tandem despite being in different times. By the end of this episode I think my heart was just some kind of crumpled mess on the floor. So interesting to hear Jessica Lee Gagne talk about this on the official #Severance pod (not believing in time makes sense)

One of my favourite things (okay, I have a lot of favourite things) about #Severance is its use of language. The Orwellian corporate euphemisms. Ricken's masterful oevre. "Wrathfully yours". And then sometimes they just don't need words at all.

Just remembered we have Woe's Hollow up next. Oh man.

I remember very early on Dan having the idea for Episode 4 and what it would entail and thinking that was a fantastic idea, and wondering how we were going to get our arms around it. Then, once we started actually shooting it, being like, “Oh, okay, we're actually going to do the thing that Dan thought of. We're actually going to go to this place and actually do this thing. Without any embellishment, we're going to do it." It's art.
