She can be very persuasive and sarcastic when she needs to be — both traits she gets from her older sister, and best friend, Tara.

A 14-year-old orphaned boy who’s just trying to survive with his older brother after the war. Plagued with nightmares from what recently happened, Mitali still hasn’t moved on from the grief of losing his parents and his friend.

Extremely loyal, kind, and selfless, Mitali hates burdening anyone else with his problems. Though he used to be a loud and very talkative boy, he’s often quiet and somber after what happened.

He’s very sentimental and often gets stuck in his own mind.

All he really wants is things to go back to the way they were before the war — but he knows that’s not going to happen.

Excerpt: When we pull into my grandparents gravel driveway, even the yard smells boring. A single row of wildflowers bend in the breeze along the fence line, but there are no shrubs or trees. The backyard is square, the grass is overgrown and littered with leaves and twigs, and the path leading from the house to the splintered gate is spotted with weeds. The gate won’t shut even though Dad tries twice, grunting and blaming a loose hinge that he’ll need to fix.

Beyond the property stretches a grassy slope that ends at the woods I’ve been warned not to enter. Even though Mom said four years is a long time to stay scared of trees, and I do miss them. That piney smell, that spongy forest floor. But I’m just not ready. Dad said that was fine because the fast-moving river and dense forest make it easy to get lost.
