Oh, it’s Bandcamp Friday, I should promote something. I put out a little… single? EP? song suite? a few months ago. It was an attempt to process some grief and some feelings of helplessness during illness. Without wanting to be too gloopy about it. It’s got guitars.

I can’t be the only person who fast forwards past the first few seconds of YouTube videos that start with a clip of a joke that comes later in the episode? I’m sure it’s trendy for a reason but it’s so off-putting.

Ha ha ha, I got to read it before it's officially out in the world! Anyway, if you (like me) enjoy novels where the main character is Death itself, then you (like me) will enjoy this one.

This four-disc set Cole Porter songs covered over the decades was a great way to get into both the songs and the musicians, all from way before my time; it also meant Red Hot + Blue hit harder when it came out a few years later. But also, this is why I got my first CD player. To listen to this.

I've been listening to the Feldman Edition albums that Mode put out, and it's been really lovely to spend this time soaking in the Morton Feldman. And only one left to listen to! You know, the six-hours-long-without-breaks second string quartet. That one.

This is my occasional reminder that, if we know each other, and if you’re interested in playing D&D or other ttrpgs, you should get in touch. Even/especially if you haven’t done it before.

Some artworks you see once and then every few years after that they return to your mind, unbidden, unexpected, and you greet them and let them take over for a while. RIP Yayoi Kusama.

Sometimes I start to think: I should write a novel. Why would I write a novel? To find out what writing a novel is like. To have clearer thoughts about novels. To learn why I would write a novel. Of course these efforts fail. Then a dozen years pass and I start to think: I should write a novel.

For those playing along, I also revisited the major Ives orchestral works not too long ago, so: 4, Unanswered, Central Park, Holidays, Orch Set 2, Three Places, 2, 3, 1. (I did not dabble in the Universe completions. I may have forgotten something.)

Yesterday I listened to all nine Beethoven symphonies for the first time in decades and here’s how I’d rank them, from most to least enjoyed: 7, 9, 5, 6, 1, 3, 2, 4, 8. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

A little queer poem from @itsakirby.bsky.social, included in On Occasion (a new anthology of occasional poems).
FAIRY KNOWS
KIRBY

My survival does not make me exceptional. Luck
Baby. History tells you you'll always be a target.
An orange rose in queer season. Fairy knows Where when to take cover, fuck in the
Shadows. Dance in the night of day. It's
Been this way, centuries sea to shining limbs
Querelle on the pier bathed in beauteous
Chests eyes hearts cocks afoot aflame
This is the place. Now the time pink ponies Reign underground surface only to fill
Lungs deep plunge low lower lower
Raise rise again again this last night
Eternity. A fag's life.

May there never be a time my face
Don't reek of your pits, balls.

Splash in NYC. I was a poor college student, with enough money for one (1) drink. I didn't want to dance and couldn't figure out what to do. The friend I went with was convinced the bartender was flirting with him and it was going to lead to something (it didn't); he made me stay to close the place.

We saw the @canadianopera.bsky.social's production of Bluebeard's Castle (Bartók) and Erwartung (Schoenberg) last night (two one-act operas from the early 20th c.) — which we saw the last time they were mounted, back in 2015 — and they're still so, so great. The best thing I've seen them do.
