saw this irl the other day... nothing makes sense anymore...
a beautiful painting by anders zorn. it features a guy on a boat, a woman on a dock and the sea under a cloudy sky. it's so detailed and textured that it's easier to conceive of it as a photo than as a watercolor.

love this thing... playful little editors are the best genre
this pixelated image displays a dithered rainbow from top to bottom that defines clearly the edge between the blue and the cyan, mimicking a red-yellow-green-cyan sky over a blue-purple-pink-red sea. brush strokes push colors around like clouds and waves. behind a light blue haze, a structure towers: it is made of bands of rainbows that mirror the overall vista at a much smaller scale and get lighter and lighter as they climb, then widen as they crest the lighthouse, now fully white.

i made it in moss.town with a two very simple custom brushes and a bit of finagling.

The Hungarian–American mathematician John von Neumann (1903–1957) is the first known person to discuss a coming "singularity" in technological progress.[13][14] Stanislaw Ulam reported in 1958 that an earlier discussion with von Neumann "centered on the accelerating progress of technology and changes in human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue".[15] Subsequent authors have echoed this viewpoint.[3][16]

pixel art of an apparent face portraying apparent emotions made of sharp holes in a yellow plate on a black background. it is not shaped the same as the new picture, but there's an undeniable resemblance.

several fragments of painter's tape are arranged on a piece of watercolor paper. with a helping of pareidolia, it isn't hard to interpret the result as some sort of face displaying some sort of emotion.watercolor has been applied around the tape. it's all in one cloud of yellow that mixes with red and with blue in opposite sides.the tape has been removed and dark shadows have been painted within... except a bottom border has been left blank within every shape, suggesting they're holes within a thick plate.the final photo is upside down and tilted. the supposed eyes are big and blurry, while the mouth is smaller and sharp.

finally some good news
image from a bbc post. the backdrop is a hiker balancing on top of a little pile of rocks in a doomed effort to challenge the magnificence of a tall mountain with a steady 45° incline. the caption reads "Nepal makes 97 mountains"

is there a second line i cropped out? surely not; misinformation is a serious issue

today i started polishing it. i used the tool i was talking about to generate some colors, added tabs for "about" and "options" and started experimenting with those options... as expected, i'm getting a lot less done today, but i'm pretty happy with where it's getting bsky.app/profile/word...
partial screenshot where the board can be seen. the palette's neutral colors are less neutral and arguably more coherent, and there are extra borders representing the tiles' visible side. two tiles contain big circles; they connect to each other like portals.

yesterday i couldn't sleep, so i adapted a card game from a video i watched i find that small projects can break me out of bad mental places the video: youtu.be/6vYEHdjlw3g?...
photo of a computer screen. "collapsi. based on the tabletop game. place your characters, then move them using wasd or [arrow symbols]."
after that text there's a grid of square tiles, some of them displaced and darkened to represent them having fallen. there are two round shapes on top of tiles, representing the blue and red players. available tiles are bordered with the active player's color, while tiles the active player has moved through this turn share its background color. all tiles but two have one to four diamonds representing the number of moves a player can make in a turn when it starts on top of them.

hacking together a palette generator that interpolates hue, saturation and lightness
minimally styled html form that asks for the number of colors as well as the HSL attributes of the lightest and darkest. in this case, between a dark red and a light pistachio green there are a brown and a yellow. the entire code can be glimpsed to the left through sublime text's scroll preview.

i asked my search engine and it has only planted "around 100"?? i feel sick...
ecosia screenshot. the search query is "how many trees have you planted" and the first result is a quora article of the same name and the text "14 feb 2013 ... I've directly planted with my own hands probably around 100, mostly with the help of other people. I've gotten probably another 300..."

happy uhhh *checks date* #witch_glednesday to those who celebrate!!
screenshot of the top corner of a windows window with a default logo and the title "zoo". it features a somewhat chaotic assortment of 16x16 pixel tiles representing a limited number of images spiced up by palettes that tap into the 16 available colors 4 at a time. the left and top edges of the tile grid trail color stripes outwards like colorful barcodes, suggesting that an increasing amount of window is not being updated every frame as the point of view moves away from it.

first generated multi-hue creature! hue areas were decided using 3d noise too, but darker colors are meant to represent the bottom and lighter ones are meant to represent the top.

this is the batch that followed as i made a bunch of adjustments
greyscale pixel-art sprites over a red background. the first two are front-facing; one fills way too much space, but i made anti-corner bias stronger and the second one is a little better (they both look like they have fangs). the third sprite uses a different projection that also reveals its top, but it's distorted; creatures look long even though they're basically carved cubes. all of the rest use yet another projection that shows the left side as well, but it's equally distorted. the first of that batch looks like a cloud of particles, so i zoom in on the noise for the next one and again for the last three. they look somewhat repetitive but i love them to bits!

first generated creature! i added one axis of symmetry and a bias against filling the corners, but the 16 stacked layers of the cube ensure it's too crowded, and the depth differences aren't popping (probably why it's so angry)
a 16 by 16 pixel image in almost homogeneous cyan tones. it's symmetrical with respect to the y axis (like a human face), which is probably why two pairs of dark pixels at the top look like angry eyes. it can be interpreted to have little legs in the bottom corners that are reminiscent of the bat-like pokémon golbat, and maybe wings that could be reminiscent of the bat-like pokémon golbat, if you squint.

a slice of opensimplex noise!
output in a dark terminal that shows pairs of brackets representing white pixels and pairs of spaces representing black pixels. there seem to be a roughly even number of white and black pixels, and colors form clusters... but the scale is very small (16 by 16 pixels), so it's hard to make out anything

new project! i'm trying to keep it as simple as possible, but it's already planned to involve 3d noise weirdness, image-based game logic, society simulation and a language (go) i've never used before. wish me luck! never made an alien zoo before
