Good guess 😆 it's betony!

That was a tricky one! The answer is betony, a perennial herb fantastic for late pollinators that can be found in grasslands, heathlands, woodland rides and gardens as late as October. 💜

Good morning #MondayMystery! Can anybody guess what we might still spot in our woodlands in early autumn?

Will you spot a hibernating herald moth this autumn and winter? They seek out dark caves, tunnels and other hidden places to spend the colder months. Wendy even spotted herald moths hanging out with cave spiders!🕸️ Find out more👉🏼 www.worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/blog/seasona...

What are ewe looking at?! 🐏🌿 Conservation grazing is really important for our meadows. We use a selection of livestock such as sheep, cows and sometimes horses to graze unwanted vigorous grasses which would normally out compete wildflowers if left unmanaged. 💚🌼

Have you ever spotted a southern green shieldbug nymph? 🪲🌻 They appear to have had a good summer and are spreading north and west from their southern England stronghold. Submit your sightings via www.worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/wildlife-sig...

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust @worcswt.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
If you've only got a photo like this to work it out from, though, look at the head pattern - on a snipe the stripes go down the head whereas on a woodcock they'd be going across the head.🙂

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust @worcswt.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It's a snipe but we can see why some of you might have thought it was a woodcock - especially as you can't really see the habitat in the photo. Snipe are associated with damp habitats whereas woodcocks, although wading birds, are predominantly associated with woodlands (cont.)

The final butterflies of the year are still hanging on 🦋 Tattered wings can tell a story of their long or hard life - they might be old, they might have snagged them on thorns or they might have escaped a bird’s beak. Despite missing parts of their wings, butterflies can still keep on flying. 💛

Good guessing everyone, it is a lesser whitethroat! A secretive bird, as our colleague Ion found here when trying to take its photo, they are most likely to be heard around woodland and scrub, rather than seen.

The water level is too low beneath the lip of the trough for small birds to reach and therefore hopefully not attempt to drink. Some troughs contain pieces of timber to give birds/insects a perch. The troughs are tall so it is unlikely that creatures such as hedgehogs would be able to climb up.

@pam-polly.bsky.social @marmaladefly.bsky.social That's right - the usual confusion is between meadow browns and gatekeepers but we've got a meadow brown and a much smaller small heath here 🦋🙂

Our colleague Beth spotted these lime galls on some lime tree leaves. The galls develop from the chemicals released when mites suck sap from the leaf surface. They can be long and pointed like these ones or shorter with rounded tips. Look out for them next time you're passing a lime tree 👀🌳
