Born OTD 100 years ago, philosopher-historian Michel Foucault (d 1984), who unlike Jean Peters (born same day) appeared in no films though he helped write 4 of them. (Despite the lack of a Hollywood career, he did ok career-wise).

Peters' last role was an episode of Murder she Wrote in 1988. My favourite Peters turns: opposite Marlon Brando in Viva Zapata! (1952); and the evil stepmother in 1953's noir Blueprint for Murder.

Born OTD 100 years ago, actress Jean Peters (d 2000). A rare actress of her generation who acted under her birth name, she shied away from "siren" roles Hollywood wanted to her to play and retired in late 50s, only to return to acting in television in the 70s.

Sad to learn of the death of the remarkable non-profit activist/ BBC presenter Dame Esther Rantzen,of "That's Life"(1973-94), a show I looked forward to each year on visits to my UK grandparents, and while living in England in the early 80s. Amid the humour of "TL" it dealt with many serious topics.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

Today on @cfrcradio.bsky.social we pay tribute to 2 musical greats (in very different genres) who died during the past few weeks: in the 1st half, Dolly Parton; in the 2nd, Cassandra Wilson. Tracks from both artists and covers of Dolly tunes by John Scofiel, Nicole Zuraitis, and the Pentatonix.

With Troup (and Robert Fuller, Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tigh) she starred in Webb's 70s series "Emergency" as Nurse McCall, by which time life-time heavy smoking had forced her to give up singing.

born OTD 100 years ago, actress turned torch singer turned actress again Julie London. She began acting in 40s, and after divorcing TV's Jack Webb, she turned to a recording career, mainly with her 2nd husband Bobby Troup. "Cry me a River" was a signature tune.

Born OTD 100 years ago, the great saxophonist John Coltrane. Even most non-jazz folk know this name after a meteoric, short, but revolutionary career cut short not by drugs like several of his contempories, but by cancer.

Agreed re both GG and Phantom. Film didn't do well commercially except in a few places; notably my home city of Winnipeg, Canada, where it ran for months and months. 16-year-old me probably saw it 5 times. IMHO a better film (and soundtrack) than the overrated RHPS.

RIP Gerrit Graham (b 1948). A steady career in film and tv up till 2012. His most memorable turns came early, in 2 of my favourite underrated films: in Robert Zemeckis' early hit Used Cars (1980), and above all as "Beef" the glam-rocker in Brian De Palma's immortal Phantom of the Paradise (1974).

Me with my pal Gayle (Arts '80) at the Thousand Islands Theatre yesterday with our (out-of-frame) spouses, 50 years after we first met on Benedickson Field as part of "Gael Group 109" which sounds like a mix of "Seal Team 6" and JFK's "PT 109", but less dangerous. Good fun marking the anniversary.

After exploring the campus (feeling like Dorothy in Oz!), I met my orientation group, including a girl from Seeley's Bay, ON, who would become a lifelong friend. Today she and I, with our spouses, will get together to celebrate 50 years of friendship, and Queen's connection (and also her birthday).

50 years ago this morning I awoke in a residence room at Queen's University having arrived late the previous night from my home in Winnipeg. I'd not visited the campus before (that wasn't a "thing" back then). I couldn't have imagined the future role the university would play in my life. 1/2

60 years ago today a weird little sci-fi show premiered. 7 year old me, in the first week at a new school, was allowed to stay up a bit later for it. Having watched Outer Limits at 5 I didn't find the monster remotely scary, but the pointy-eared alien sidekick was kind of cool.
