if i put any image on the cover of the book that i am almost done writing, it will be me drawing a sheet of a trail disappearing into the woods. the book is a very long metaphor for hiking a trail, and writing it has been a lot like hiking a beautiful trail, with surprises around every turn.

totally agree. trade deals are very complex. i just narrowed the subject to try to make a point. i was in a mood and tried to actually engage in a policy discussion. i like policy not politics. of course, trump was not negotiating in good faith. his admin is deranged. cheers!

umm, of course, every country has the right to protect its food supply. I am pro-Canada, but is guarding the unfilled part of a 3.5% slice of the dairy market worth a trade war? #never51

i think you meant: “the us has never *exported* enough dairy to canada to trigger the tariff”, hey? this is how i would probably summarize it. 🇨🇦✌️
Canada protects its dairy sector with "supply management": controlled domestic production and prices, plus tight limits on imports. Before 1995, Canada limited dairy imports with outright quotas. The 1995 WTO agreement required converting such quotas into tariff-rate quotas, with a finite volume at low tariff. A set volume can enter at zero or low tariff, and anything above it faces tariffs of roughly 250% or more. Yet the 250% tariff has never actually been paid, because U.S. exports have never exceeded the quota. The dispute is about the quota, not the tariff.
Canada’s "supply management" system dates to the early 1970s, and neither the 1988 Canada-US trade agreement nor NAFTA removed it. In recent deals Canada has opened more quota: about 1.3% of its dairy market to EU cheese (CETA), 3.25% to Pacific Rim countries (CPTPP), and about 3.5% exclusively to the U.S. under USMCA, which Trump signed in his first term. Together, that brings tariff-free imports to roughly 10% of the Canadian dairy market once fully phased in by 2031.
The core problem is that the U.S. says it can't even fill the 3.5% quota — one analysis found just 42% of the 3.5% quota was used in 2022-23. The U.S. blames how Canada hands out the licenses. Canada assigns them to importers, and U.S. exporters say most licenses go to Canadian dairy processors, who compete with the products being imported, while retailers and food-service companies get little or none. The U.S. argument is that an importer who also sells domestic dairy has little reason to bring in competing U.S. product, so the importers don't actually import up to the non-tariffed cap. This is likely why Trump started a trade war with Canada, because the USMCA that he signed did not close this loophole that Canada has used to protect its farmers since at least the 1970s.
Is it smart? Even if the quota protects Canadian dairy farmers, I doubt it's worth the risk of a broader trade war with collateral damage on both sides. The USMCA quota gi…

Look down. There, scattered across the teeming alpine sphagnum is the geranium. Each unique crimsoning snowflake like fallen stars forged in a brief autumn. They only ask you slow down until you see how each leaf is an unhurried doorway, reminding you that you belong… in this faërie haven. #poem

the colder it gets in anchorage, the windier it gets on little mount susitna. the railbelt needs wind power — in winter, when demand is highest. pumped storage hydro makes eklutna lake a battery, with a path for the fish to climb. the wind carries the river's tune. #RestoreEklutnaRiver #windpower

Eklutna lake, within the homeland of the Dena’ina Athabascan people, the K’enaht’ana. The river was dammed in 1955. A river is a conversation between the mountain and the sea — every salmon was a letter the sea wrote to the forest. The forest waits until the river sings again. #RestoreEklutnaRiver
picture of turquoise eklutna lake with snowy mountain peaks buried in misty clouds on the far shore and trees wearing fall yellow leaves framing the left side of the image, and curvaceous rocky shore on the near shore.

@naomiaklein.bsky.social @astra.bsky.social I have added a reference to you both (see image) in my upcoming book that I am wrapping up. Also highlighting the @debtcollective.bsky.social. Thank you for your leadership on this issue!
103 The structural shift from isolated survival to collective economic refusal is the governing framework of modern abolitionist financial movements. In Debt Collective: Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay: The Case for Economic Disobedience and Debt Abolition (2020), published collectively under the group’s name, the authors argue that predatory debt relies on a manufactured illusion of isolation—the myth that financial strain is a private moral failure rather than an engineered mechanism of systemic extraction. Co-founded by organizer and filmmaker Astra Taylor alongside economic anthropologist Hannah Appel, the movement emerged from Occupy Wall Street's Strike Debt initiative, born from the realization that while an isolated debtor is powerless, millions of debtors organized together have power over the financial system. Debt is only an instrument of control so long as it keeps us separated; the moment debtors unite, power shifts from the creditor to the union. The movement flips the fundamental rule of banking on its head: if you owe the bank $10,000, the bank owns you; but if ten million people owe the bank $100 billion, the debtors have leverage over the bank. Just as the susu or tanda transforms individual scarcity into communal capital outside the corporate banking apparatus, debtor unions aggregate individual liabilities into a collective strike, turning what the market intended as a chain of bondage into a weapon of structural leverage. Debt, in this framework, ceases to be a solitary weight written into the biological ledger of the individual; when pooled, it becomes a site of distributed agency—the collective withholding of consent that forces financial institutions to absorb the cost of their own enclosure.

104 This internal erosion among the hyper-privileged parallels Naomi Klein’s observation that "extreme wealth has a deranging effect." In End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World (2026), co-authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor examine how unbridled a…

the civil rights movement and historical boycotts worked because people moved collectively. this is the structural leverage that montgomery used on the bus lines. it’s about what you subsidize with your money and attention. 🙏
