at certain times of night, as our breathing starts to synchronize, we inevitably start thinking the same thing Wondermark #1590; Breaking the Third Wall
[[Kneeling in reverence, DODDI gazes up at FRANTHA, whose eyes dart about as she responds.]]

DODDI: It's getting LATE... Are you thinking what I'M thinking?
FRANTHA: MAYBE! That'd be fun!

FRANTHA: I'M thinking about how, in a PLAY, you could have a character lok out a WINDOW on stage... They could use their phone to FILM something through the window, then PLAY IT BACK to show the other characters... And the recording could be a BIG MONSTER just outside the window! Because a SPECIAL EFFECTS video could be PRE-LOADED on the actor's phone!

FRANTHA (continuing): Wouldn't THAT be a neat effect? Especially if the window frame from the SET was IN the shot! To fully SELL it, a line of dialogue could be BOTH delivered on stage, AND be in the video!

FRANTHA (her gaze landing on Doddi for the first time): I assume you're thinking about something along the same lines. Considering how STRESSED you've been about how REHEARSALS are going.

DODDI: NOW I'm thinking that there's no way for the audience to see the tiny little phone scren.

FRANTHA (eyes widening): He films it on an IPAD PRO! It becomes a CHARACTER CHOICE!

He died as he lived: hated Wondermark #1589; The Ol' Scorny Mourny
[[A man in an elaborate hat and leggings, WHIPSMARK, holding a book, speaks to a woman, BELDRA, peering through a lorgnette and holding a tiny dog.]]

WHIPSMARK: Did you just POST this about the late DINGO WOLFHEART?

WHIPSMARK: “Rest in poop to DUMBO WOLF FART. I’m glad he’s dead, but I’m sad I wasn’t there to watch it happen”
WHIPSMARK: “He will be mourned by other people who should ALSO all die soon. This is not a THREAT of any sort, simply a request to Santa Claus”

BELDRA: I have a bunch more in my drafts, if you’d care to see.
WHIPSMARK: I do NOT.

WHIPSMARK (sternly): Crass. Disrespectful. When I die, are you going to say terrible things about ME, too?

BELDRA: WELL
BELDRA (sliding into a smirking, gleeful side-eye): THAT DEPENDS

What we consume, we digest; what is consumed, is no longer what it was. Such is how we are nourished. Wondermark #1587; And Onward One Opines
[[A woman, KYLEEN, whom attentive readers will remember from a previous comic, strolls with a man, BOYSWORTH, whom attentive readers will not remember because this is his first appearance, but who carries a cane.]]

KYLEEN: Did you catch the series finale of HEADSTABBERS UNIVERSITY?
BOYSWORTH: YEAH, I watch all that garbage.

BOYSWORTH: I don't envy their task of wrapping up so many story threads. The DEMIDUKE and the thing with the Waxwork Guillotine... bringing back the SKULL MERCHANT with a NEW DOG... I thought it was ALL RIGHT. Not great, but all right.

BOYSWORTH: Thinking back now, there was a HUGE missed opportunity. When KARLO went into SPACE... They could've done a whole "Charles Lindbergh ended up becoming a Nazi" thing! It would've RESONATED!

KYLEEN: Maybe that DID happen, but off-screen. We can IMAGINE it!

BOYSWORTH: I can't STOP imagining it! What a SMART twist that would have been! Oh well. It's OVER. Nothing to be done.

[[Kyleen joins her friend BRINDLA, whom attentive readers will also remember from her previous appearance in the series that introduced Kyleen.]]

BRINDLA: SO? Has he discovered fan fiction yet??
KYLEEN: SLOWLY! SLOWLY! His kind spook easily!

Invention is the big ol' kid, dropped off at the pool, of necessity Wondermark #1586; In which a Deuce is Cubed
[[OTTO, this world's inveterate entrepreneur and hustler, is pitching a group of distinguished-looking people at a luncheon.]]

OTTO: ...The device is a water jet mounted INSIDE the toilet bowl.

OTTO: Using a simplified version of the same process used in metal parts fabrication... And fully submerged, to minimize SPLASHBACK... the jets SURGICALLY SLICE AND DICE all your solid waste.

OTTO: With today's low-flow, clog-prone toilet designs... This ensures ALL matter entering the toilet's narrow, winding plumbing is rendered smaller than regulation casino dice.

[[One of the listeners interjects with a comment.]]

LISTENER: To clarify, you mean the type used in...

LISTENER (eyes widening mischievously, while a companion snickers): CRAPS?

[[Otto, no longer at the luncheon, is greeted by DINGBOY, holding his usual pole.]]

DINGBOY: How'd the pitch go?
OTTO: They MOCK me, and I have to LAUGH ALONG! As if EXISTING plumbing solutions are SUFFICIENT for the gentleman of prodigious issue!!

Someone should do something! Wondermark #1585; In which a Complaint is made
[[CHANDRA, a young girl, speaks with her mom, CHANDROLDA.]]

CHANDRA: I keep hearing so much about the injustice and unfairness of the world. TIME only goes forward. KIDS have to grow up. PETS aren't immortal.
CHANDROLDA: All less than ideal.

CHANDRA: I'm not sure what EXACTLY I can do to help, but I've started by writing a sternly worded letter.
CHANDROLDA: Oh?

CHANDROLDA: To whom?
CHANDRA: Well, the only one I KNOW reads his mail is SANTA. So I sent it to him and asked him to forward it internally

"[[BLORNSWORTH slumps exhausted against a chair while CRANDIBLE lounges with his feet up.]]

BLORNSWORTH: Whoooffff. I just ate an entire jumbo bag of chips and I do NOT feel good about it
CRANDIBLE: Let me know if THIS makes you feel any better...

CRANDIBLE: Imagine all the loose chips from that jumbo bag.
CRANDIBLE: Now imagine them all mashed up into a SOLID LUMP of salt and carbs.

CRANDIBLE: How BIG would that lump be? ALL the chips in one giant mass?
CRANDIBLE: That's INSIDE you now. That's in your GUTS. That's what YOU put in there.

A classic Wondermark from 20 (or 2000????) years ago Wondermark #176; In which Satan enjoys Matzoh
[[Jesus Christ, Lord of all humanity, speaks with the beautifully demonic fallen angel Lucifer, Prince of the Air, the one known as Satan, in the cavern-like bowels of Hell.]]

SATAN: Hey, Josh! Long time no see. What're you doing in this neck of the woods?
JESUS: Ah, you know, I got crucified last night.

SATAN: Bummer! Well, come in, the kids'll be thrilled to see their god-dad.
JESUS: Thanks, but I can't. I have to defeat you and return to life to save the souls of the world.

SATAN: Okay, well, make it quick, we're just sitting down to Passover seder.

Adulthood is a hard case to make to someone who's not already bought in. Wondermark #1583; Groan Up
[[A woman, GERTRUDO, sits at the dinner table table with a young girl, TIFFANORIA, who is seated in a chair]]

GERTRUDO: Can you finish your veggies? Veggies help us grow up big and strong!
TIFFANORIA: GROW UP? Why would I want to do THAT? I'm good now!

GERTRUDO: I've got everything I need! I have YOUTUBE and my ROOM and all my STUFF... I get BOSSED AROUND a little, but that's not a bad tradeoff

GERTRUDO: You can do all kinds of things when you grow up! You can drive!

They're still out there. The goofs and spoofs. If we can only find them. Wondermark #1582; Limit Your Scream Time
A smartphone is on an end table. It's balancing up on end, and speaking, so maybe it's animate? This is unclear.

SMARTPHONE: Hey! HEY!

The phone is speaking to PORDLEY, who is trying to practice the piano. He looks up at the phone which is addressing him on its own.

SMARTPHONE: I can't help but notice you've been holding me less. I MISS you. I miss your nimble TAPS and SWIPES.

PORDLEY: It's because you're a PORTAL to HORRORS! Nothing personal. It's just...you ARE a PORTAL. And there are SO VERY MANY horrors.

SMARTPHONE: I'm a portal to EVERYTHING. Don't you want to see GOOFS AND SPOOFS? You LOVE goofs and spoofs!

PORDLEY: I DO love goofs and spoofs.

SMARTPHONE: I've got SO MANY goofs and spoofs.

Pordley, convinced, reaches tentatively for the phone...

...How it's going: Wondermark #1581; The Longest, Most Fruitless Search (continued from part 1)
It has been 23 years since we have last seen these characters.

ARGREENO now has a long white beard. He is bringing a basket to a large tree. A familiar voice replies from up the tree.

ARGREENO: Got some chicken tacos tonight.
PICKET (from up in the tree): Thanks, man. I’ll have those spreadsheets back to you later this week. My wifi’s been spotty.
ARGREENO: You want me to move the router closer?
PICKET: Nah, I think I just need to restart.

Suddenly, Argreeno sees something approaching from the left.

ARGREENO: Whoop — Code Papa.
PICKET: Copy that

It’s PICKET SR., still flying around, his hairline a little higher, more wrinkles around his eyes. But looking fit otherwise.

PICKET SR.: PLEASE… My son is STILL missing…*
PICKET SR.: Would you please look around ONE MORE time?

(*A footnote advises us to see Part 1, Wondermark #024, which was published 23 years ago)

ARGREENO: You come by every year! I HAVEN’T SEEN your dang SON! It’s been DECADES!
PICKET SR.: I KNOW, but…that SO looks like the flying machine he absconded on. That’s why I keep retuning.

Behind the tree is something that looks a whole lot like the bottom half of a pedal-copter.

ARGREENO: As I’ve told you MANY times, that’s just our hummingbird feeder. You want me to look around again? FINE. Doot doot doo, I don’t see him.

MRS ARGREENO now enters, carrying her typical pickax.

MRS ARGREENO: What’s the commotion?
ARGREENO: THIS flying deadbeat thinks we’ve been sheltering his missing son and feeding him chicken tacos in return for him doing the bookkeeping for our Christmas tree farm.

ARGREENO: It’s absurd.
PICKET SR.: It’s just…the thing is… I KNOW that NO hummingbird would be attracted to such dull colors.
ARGREENO: YEAH! We friggin’ HATE hummingbirds! Because they remind us of YOU!

How it started: Wondermark #024; In which factors Public Health
Here comes PICKET on his little pedal-copter! He pedals up to ARGREENO, who is carrying a pine tree, as is his wont.

PICKET: Quick! Don't ask questions, just hide me!

Argreeno hides Picket behind the tree. But now here comes PICKET SR., flying up, a contraption on his back holding him aloft.

PICKET SR.: You there! Have you seen my son go by? He's infected by a terrible virus that will kill one-third of the earth's population, making five-eights of those remaining lactose intolerant while granting amazing super-powers to a quarter of the remainder!

PICKET SR.: Well, come on, then, either you've seen him or you haven't.
ARGREENO: Wait, no, start over. I was always bad at math.

Sometimes it's impossible to do anything, sometimes it's impossible to NOT do anything. Wondermark #1580; What’s Undone is Undead
JERMETHY is back at the ol' workshop, tinkering with a device that resembles a jar with a bunch of valves and an enormous protruding wheel. He's got his glasses up on his forehead as he concentrates on the task.

LORLA pokes her head in. She’s wearing a long knit sweater and a cozy-looking scarf. This isn’t relevant to the story but I want to call it out.

LORLA: Are you STILL tinkering with that? You said you were giving it up.
JERMETHY: I had a new idea for it.

LORLA: You told me “I don’t care if this can somehow be made to work, it’s not worth the effort.” You said “I’m going to give it up, SPECIFICALLY as PRACTICE in giving up. Deciding it’s DONE and putting it on a shelf.” YOUR words were “It’s about FOCUS and PRIORITIES and practicing CONTROL over my impulses.”
JERMETHY: I did say all that.

JERMETHY: But IT was not LISTENING. A new idea came to me, just to SPITE me

JERMETHY (scowling): And I’ll be DAMNED if I let it TAUNT me!
LORLA: What you KEPT REPEATING was “Discipline!”
JERMETHY: Oh, I’m gonna discipline this naughty thing all right.

A monstrous, bolted-together creature speaks with a soldier.

SOLDIER: WELL! Aren't YOU looking all hale and vimful! Wait, does that mean bad? I mean bad. You look real bad.

CREATURE: I have no idea how I look because I cannot move my neck and I am terrified of mirrors. But I FEEL awful!

CREATURE: I got three main problems going on. One: SPLITTING headache. Migraine would be a MERCY.

CREATURE: Two: A MAD SCIENTIST of some sort seems to have ASSEMBLED me using cast-off body parts and miscellaneous junkyard finds. I do NOT remember going to bed like this.

CREATURE: And three: I SOMEHOW have to explain that there's a new Wondermark card game crowdfunding RIGHT NOW! In which players race to build weird characters like me!

SOLDIER (sotto): You're not WEIRD. You're SAD and it makes you FEEL weird

CREATURE (indicating a huge sandwich board): But how am I gonna DO it? You can't link out on IG! I gotta do 'link in bio,' UGH! I brought this big QR CODE sign, but I got NO clue if THAT'S gonna work in this context

SOLDIER: Don't forget, I think you're supposed to end with some kind of joke or punchline.

SOLDIER: ARRGHH!!! Now I got FOUR problems!

This comic was created as part of a "Secret Santa" comics exchange. These characters are Tiff and Eve, and this strip was written by Fran Sundblad, the author of the comic Tiff 🏳️‍⚧️ & Eve, and rendered in Wondermark style by me. 🔗 Original Reddit post cc: @tiffandevecomics.bsky.social
Here's Fran's original script, verbatim:

(Tiff is wrapping gifts, Eve enters)
Eve: "Is that your white elephant gift for the party?"

Tiff: "Yup! I just finished wrapping it."
Eve: "Oh, I haven't done that yet. Mine's trickier to package."

Tiff: "Bring it in and I can help you."
Tiff: "The key is finding the right edges and having the paper fold with them."

Tiff: "what'd you get anyways?"
Eve (yanking reins into panel with a large white trunk and tusks appearing.)

do you gotta personify the dead trees in the vacant lot too. they're having a hard enough time without you imagining they have an opinion about what's happening Wondermark #1578; In which Trees are a Lot
Two men, LENID and RINNY, are browsing a Christmas tree lot. Lenid looks admiringly at a big bushy tree.

LENID: What do you think of this one?
RINNY: Yeah! Looks great. I'll get in line to pay.

LENID: Don't you want to look at any others?
RINNY: WHY? This one's fine! Good choice! Let's get it and be done!
LENID: We JUST GOT here!
RINNY: And now we can MINIMIZE our time here to go enjoy the REST of our life!

LENID: Just take one walk around. See if there are any other contenders.
RINNY (rolling his eyes): Fine

Rinny walks among the other trees, dismissing each handily.

RINNY: No. No. No. Inferior. Inferior. Inferior... Actually, THIS one's pretty. Let me see the one you chose again?

LENID: SEE? Aren't you GLAD I made you look?
RINNY: I'm SORRY, trees! You all seem perfectly nice! But we INSIST on making all but ONE of you into LOSERS we have to ACTIVELY REJECT! We could have ben TEN BLOCKS AWAY by now but INSTEAD we're gonna make you ALL feel bad!

terrifying if true! Wondermark #1020; The Unknown Knowns
A guy with a Napoleon III mustache is consulting a newspaper and speaking with a fellow sporting epaulets.

FAUXPOLEON: I heard — and I don’t know if it’s true — that DOGS are just genetically modified HUMAN INFANTS. Isn’t that OUTRAGEOUS? Who DID that? What ELSE don’t we know about dogs??

E’PAUL: That is not true.

FAUXPOLEON: I don’t KNOW if it’s true or not. But just think of what it MEANS! People EXPERIMENTING on BABIES!

E’PAUL: Indeed. Good thing it’s not true!

FAUXPOLEON: You gotta ADMIT that it’s SCARY to think about!

E’PAUL: As a thought experiment? Okay. As a falsehood examined AS a falsehood on its face? Okay.

E’PAUL: As a valid piece of actual real information worth debating as if it WERE true when it is demonstrably NOT? No.

FAUXPOLEON: It MIGHT be true!

E’PAUL: It is not.

FAUXPOLEON: It might be SOMEDAY.

E’PAUL: Okay.

FAUXPOLEON: What should we DO about it?

E’PAUL: Nothing.

FAUXPOLEON: You’re so PASSIVE. You never want to take a STAND.

there's one in every friend group Wondermark #1360; Set the Calendar to Shuffle
ABATHA opens the front door to great GLENGIS, who is dressed in a Roman centurion helmet and what appears to be a bird beak mask. He also has huge sideburns/dundrearies but I think those are just his vibe.

ABATHA: Hey, it’s Glengis! Glad you could make it to Thanksgiving!
GLENGIS: Trick or treat!

ABATHA: Go on.
GLENGIS: I’m treating our culture’s MADE-UP RITUALS as interchangeable. We’ve inherited an astonishing agreed-upon symbology and it only ever gets put to the SAME OLD USES! It’s like learning the alphabet and then ONLY using it to sing variations on the alphabet song!

GLENGIS: So I’m trying to spell NEW WORDS with it all. From now on, I eat turkey on Flag Day, shoot fireworks on Valentine’s Day, and drink green beer for eight WILD AN’ CRAZY nights!

ABATHA: Cool. And what about the people you interact with in social settings, who are just going to assume you’re deranged?

I mean, an echo is technically a second opinion Wondermark #1577; The Objective Oracle
Pemsbrey sits, glum and dejected, at his favorite table. Robotecca, his automaton assistant with huge naturals, stands waiting to give her sage advice.

PEMSBREY: Robotecca, I ain’t feeling too good.

ROBOTECCA: My programmed response is to say words that express a sympathy I can not truly feel.

PEMSBREY: I get it. Ain’t too different from people in that way.

PEMSBREY: Everyone’s out to shut me up or shut me down. And I mean, EVERYONE! I live the most PERSECUTED life IMAGINABLE!

ROBOTECCA: This information is noted and added to memory.

PEMSBREY: Why are things so HARD. Why can’t I just be HAPPY?

ROBOTECCA: It’s a good question—one worthy of serious contemplation. It seems like your feelings are quite justified.

ROBOTECCA: After all, everyone is out to shut you up or shut you down. Astonishing as it may sound, you live the most persecuted life imaginable.

A little bird told me there's a Part 2 to this storyline Wondermark #1371; The Avian Informant (Part 2 of 2) ↩ Start from Part 1
Apronni speaks further with the little bird, who is perched on his sill.

APRONNI: You’re really THE bird! The little bird who tells people things! WOW! I hear about you all the time! This is incredible!

BIRD (setting a straw hat jauntily upon his little bird head): Yeah, well, I got fifty thousand more tidbits to tell people before 9PM, so…

APRONNI: Is it — JUST you? ALWAYS? There isn’t a little bird corps? You’re THE little bird?

BIRD: I used to have a lizard and a raccoon helping me out too, but it muddled the brand.

[CUT AWAY TO: A new man, Cuthbert, addresses his coworker]

CUTHBERT: ’Morning, Jerbert! A weird raccoon told me your daughter’s about to graduate from kindergarten!

JERBERT: You are never to talk TO or OF my family EVER AGAIN

[BACK TO SCENE]

APRONNI: Sure, I can see that.

APRONNI: But WHY do you go around telling people things? What’s your angle?

BIRD: Right now I’m just building up a dedicated user base. I’ll probably pivot to a freemium model later

A little bird told me that there's a comic here for you to read! Wondermark #1370; The Avian Informant (Part 1 of 2)
A man in an apron, aptly named Apronni, addresses his coworker:

APRONNI: JULIORA! A little bird told me it was your birthday next Wednesday!

Juliora comes in to reply.

JULIORA: A little bird? Like, a BIRD bird? TALKED to you?
APRONNI: Yeah. Came to my window last night around eight.

Now we see a little pigeon perched on the sill of an open window. Apparently Apronni lives in a barn, or something like a barn? It’s not entirely clear.

BIRD: Pssst. Hey buddy. [Apronni enters.] She’s been looking at ski boots on Zappos. Do what you will with this information.

Back in the office now, flashback over.

JULIORA: Because I’VE seen a little bird too! It let me know when a Zumba class opened up in my area!

ENTREBERT (entering with his hands held a pigeon’s width apart): A little bird? About yea big? Knows a lot about when jeans go on sale? Yeah, I’ve seen ‘I’m!

APRONNI: I guess it must be the same little bird visiting everyone!

Cut back to the bird, still on the windowsill. Part of the flashback from earlier? It’s not entirely clear.

BIRD: I’m very tired

GARY: Spachel keeps the theme going with "Sexy Giant Cursed Skulls"
SPACHEL: "Sexy" is redundant in that sentence

GARY: And...who IS that as "Sexy Globe"?
GLOBE: It's FRABLINDA!
(Voice from off): GARY!

(Voice): Are you locked up in there with your DOLLS again? Putting them through ELABORATE SCENARIOS?
GARY (flop sweating): Mom do NOT come in here

Different approaches, same goal. Except for the other team. Their goal is usually on the opposite side Wondermark #1576; In which the Audience participates (Part 3 of 3) ↩ Start from Part 1
Amberspatch and Bellowton are once again riding different steeds. Amberspatch is on a small hippo. Bellowton is sidesaddle on a very normal quadrupedal giant chicken. They continue their conversation about sports.

AMBERSPATCH: I'm interested in your...RITUALS related to sports, so I talked to another fan. HE said the reason your team lost WASN'T related to the socks anyone wore, OR whether he watched on TV or listened to the radio

AMBERSPATCH: According to THIS guy, the main factor was the decision to PITCH to the other team's best hitter, rather than walk him; since first base was open, it would have set up the force out for a double play. And doing so after having pulled the starting pitcher in the FIRST place, in favor of a weaker pitcher from the bullpen

AMBERSPATCH: Which, in HIS view, points the finger at managerial malpractice. All made WORSE by ownership's lack of willingness to pony up for better hitters from the bottom of the lineup.

BELLOWTON: SURE. Insufferable after-the-fact armchair coaches like that are a dime a dozen.

AMBERSPATCH: But YOU prefer to focus on wearing the right socks and so on.

BELLOWTON: Look, if the bus might be headed off the cliff anyway, I prefer having a toy steering wheel to keep my hands busy

The key is to keep everything exactly the same. Even a minor difference could throw everything off. Wondermark #1575; In which the Audience participates (Part 2) ↩ Start from Part 1
Amberspatch & Bellowton continue their ride across the plain. Amberspatch is now on a giant raccoon. Bellowton is on a camel, but the saddle is on the camel's neck. Seems possibly uncomfortable for the camel.

AMBERSPATCH: So if the game goes WELL, you need to do everything exactly the same for the next one. Down to where you watch, what you wear, the snacks, everything.

BELLOWTON: Well, yeah. That alchemy WORKED. It's obviously an inexact science, so the SAFEST thing to do is LIMIT the variables however possible.

AMBERSPATCH: Clearly, whatever your fans did, made the team win. Meaning, whatever THEIR fans did, made them LOSE. So, won't they be trying a bunch of DIFFERENT things on their side?

AMBERSPATCH: That's introducing all KINDS of new variables.

BELLOWTON: PROBABLY! Why do you think we HATE THEM so much!!

Good luck to all teams, but mainly mine, and not yours Wondermark #1574; In which the Audience participates (Part 1)
Two men are having a conversation while riding on horseback, as you sometimes do.

AMBERSPATCH: Sorry your team had a rough night yesterday.

BELLOWTON: My own fault.

BELLOWTON: I watched the game on TV. When they won the day before, I was listening on the radio. Lesson learned! Radio ONLY tonight.

AMBERSPATCH: I know these superstitions are...CRUCIAL. But wouldn't it be NICER to watch it on TV?

BELLOWTON: "SUPERSTITIONS"?

BELLOWTON: Was it ME, one person, watching the game on TV from miles away, that CAUSED the wild pitch that let their runner score? Of COURSE not. That's silly.

BELLOWTON (now leaning in extremely closely): It was ALL OF US, COLLECTIVELY, doing NOT ENOUGH things right. I am going to DO MY PART so I don't have to LIVE with the GUILT!

AMBERSPATCH: Okay!

BELLOWTON: Does ONE VOTE swing an election? You still VOTE, DON'T YOU?!

AMBERSPATCH: OKAY!!

I'm sure no one at all will find this relatable Wondermark #1573; The Threat of Doing
INT. SITTING ROOM - DAY

JENKEN (be-piped) and PRONCHIE (her hand on his chair back) are reviewing important documents when the longsuffering LEMMETHA comes in and leans on a doorframe.

LEMMETHA: I got tired of waiting, so I started fixing the chair by myself. Where do you keep the chair putty? Should I go buy some?

JENKEN (alarmed): CHAIR putty? HOLD ON, hold on…

INT. WORKSHOP - MOMENTS LATER

Jenken is now hard at work chiseling a chair, which is being held in a vise.

JENKEN: All we really have to do is adjust the back like this… In the box of IKEA LEFTOVERS there’s probably one of the right brackets…

Pronchie watches the whole thing with veiled amusement.

PRONCHIE: You realize, the whole “fixing it myself” bit was a ruse to get YOU to finally fix it.

PRONCHIE: She’s figured out how to hack your motivation circuit, dude!

JENKEN: Honestly, I’m glad SOMEONE has! I can be the owner OR the operator of this brain, but not both at the same time

I'm as proud of that storyline as anything I've done with Wondermark. Now that that job has ended and I'm answerable only to myself again, I'm glad to look back on it as a reminder of how much fun all this can be creatively, given the right circumstances.
Two panels from Wondermark #1425. The veteronorfian, Sir Kel F. Finnt, is saying to the young car-riding elephant:

KEL: Man, I LOVE Chick Tracts. I ever show you what I like to do to 'em? HERE, I think I happen to have my favorite one WITH me...

PHANT: That's my man! Always prepared for anything!

Kel has turned a Chick Tract called 'Fallen Star' into a Shrek drawing, complete with 'Donkey!!' dialogue.

KEL: I turn all the people into Shrek. Give it a bit of a MAKE-OGRE. Adds a little extra...GAS to the CREATIVE TANK, I suppose you could say.

PHANT: Yeah! WHAT a concept! I could use a little "fuel" myself...

Sick elephants were also the theme of that year's Wondermark Calendar – which would become the last installment of the calendar series (at least so far). A few months into 2019, I was offered a job that radically changed my working availability, and my pace of making comics would slow for a time.

I also run Wondermark comics regularly over at GoComics. I've been working my way through the entire archive, slightly faster than real time, for almost a decade. Which means...
The Wondermark landing page on GoComics, featuring the blurb:

"Wondermark" is a collage-based comic strip. By turns sarcastic, silly, weird, and wondrous, each comic is a window into an alternate world in which anything can happen but probably shouldn't. Every panel is assembled from engravings and woodcuts sourced from 19th-century magazines, newspapers, catalogs, storybooks, and primers, which makes "Wondermark" a collaboration with the dead. "Wondermark" is canonically set in the modern day—it's just that everyone has really good fashion sense.

In fact, when I pitch the books to folks, I say, "You can start reading with any volume. There's no continuity, except for exactly one running gag." The theater critic watches Norbert's career rise and fall, as he acts in episode after episode.
Another theater-critic page, this time from my book EMPEROR OF THE FOOD CHAIN, in which the critic is very harsh about Norbert's performance in Wondermark #540.

Because, as it turned out, most of those characters were played by the same few elephant actors! This is a recurring joke from my book collections: all the elephant strips are reviewed by a theater critic, evaluating the latest performance of the classically-trained Norbert.
A page from the Wondermark book BEARDS OF OUR FOREFATHERS. After reprinting a colorized version of Wondermark #013, in which the elephant crashes through the window, a theater critic expounds at length about the dramatic performance he has just witnessed from the elephant actor and the little girl.

What started as a way to explore how multiple punchlines could stem from the same premise became a sprawling, months-long adventure that referenced (whether you knew it or not) every single time I'd ever featured any elephant in Wondermark.
A panel from Wondermark #188. A man explains, "My shirt is in Russian, which is ironic because the ideal consumer of this shirt does not speak Russian. He or she is also probably too young to remember the Soviet Union, thus neo-Soviet design is 'retro.' In addition, the shirt is ironic because it asks 'Where is my elephant?' although the elephant is clearly right there in the center."Two panels from Wondermark #838, in which a small elephant in a straw boater and tall boots sings, "Oh it's off to...
Candycane Street
in Gumdrop Town
where the birds compete
to bother a clown

And the clown goes nuts
so the people cheer
and they show him their butts
'til he reeks of his tears"A panel from Wondermark #245, in which a couple looks at a fortune cookie. "'Scream car elephant young be much mangle.' Man, someone screwed up in the translation department." Meanwhile an elephant is racing toward them out of control on a little car, yelling "AAAH NO BRAKES". The car is going NYAARRRMMTwo panels from Wondermark #013. An elephant crashes through a window. A little girl reading a book doesn't even look up.

The elephant instantly remounts his pennyfarthing bicycle to ride away.

Get yourself a friend who will NOT let things hurt you EVEN if they do not exist Wondermark #1572; In which a Joke is disowned
Two men are chatting in an office. The first man, CHILTRED, dressed in an elaborate military uniform, is twirling his moustache, and continues to do so throughout the exchange, without pause.

CHILTRED: I heard this great joke earlier. What WAS it? AARRGH!! I can't remember! Something about dogs and ducks. DANGIT!! It was really funny. Now it's GONE.

PERMBLEY (the other man, seated): Is the distress you're feeling now greater than the joy the joke gave you originally?

CHILTRED: Oh, enormously.

PERMBLEY: So the EXISTENCE of this joke has been a NET LOSS for you! Don't REGRET its disappearance! RUE that it ever appeared! CURSE ITS MEMORY!!

CHILTRED: I don't HAVE its memory!

PERMBLEY: It has inflicted a joke-shaped SCAR on your psyche! FIE ON YOU, sinister dog joke! NEVER AGAIN dare to darken my dear friend's skull!

CHILTRED: WAIT. I remembered it.

PERMBLEY: NOPE! Don't you DARE!!

CHILTRED: It's not the JOKE'S fault I forgot it! It's innocent!

PERMBLEY: I will never be able to separate it from the trauma it has inflicted!

CHILTRED: That starts to sound like a YOU problem.

PERMBLEY: Wow. WOW. After I DEFENDED you.

CHILTRED: I did not INTEND to spend an APPARENTLY-CONDITIONAL friend defense on a JOKE about DOGS and DUCKS

CHARLEK, one of the kids from the previous comic in which kids were talking about how adults always try to change them, is now speaking with his MOM.

MOM: Please wash your hands for dinner!

CHARLEK: I'm perfectly self-actualized just as I am, thank you.

MOM: Honey, when we give you instructions like "Wash your hands", we're not trying to make you into SOMEONE ELSE. We're trying to help you become the BEST version OF you, using knowledge and perspective that you don't have yet. Such as the germ theory of disease.

MOM: So when we ask you to do things, it's in what WE believe to be YOUR best interest. Do you TRUST us?

CHARLEK: I mean, I GUESS

CHARLEK: But what about when you make me assembled sticker packs for your Etsy store? Is THAT in my best interest?

MOM: THAT'S because Mama's got a bunch of BACKORDERS! Come on, let's HURRY UP with that DINNER!!

Let's get our messaging straight, as parents Wondermark #1570; Of Integrity and Youth
Two kids, ALFY and BARBO, are chatting. Barbo is standing on a set of stilts. This is not relevant.

ALFY: You ever get this from your parents? "Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with you, you're perfectly normal..."

ALFY: I KNOW I am! Why are YOU bringing it up? What secret intel do YOU have about how I'm SUPPOSED to be feeling?

ALFY: Because I feel GREAT! Check your EXPECTATIONS!

BARBO: Grown-ups LIE to us, dude. Every other word my mom says is: "You're great" - "We love you JUST the way you are" - "You're the BEST YOU that you can be" - and so on.

BARBO: So I told her, "The person that I AM DOESN'T wear jackets, DOESN'T brush their teeth, and NEVER has to go to bed!"

A third child, CHARLEK, appears, holding a ball, which is also not relevant.

CHARLEK: Just last week, I was sick. My mom tried to give me MEDICINE. So I'm all "What was that BIG TALK about not wanting to CHANGE me?!"

BARBO: EXACTLY, dude!!

It's nice to have friends over who share your hobbies. Wondermark #108; In which a Briefing occurs
A very old Wondermark 3-panel comic. Two men in military uniforms stand near a woman who does not appear to notice them. One man is pointing toward the woman's head.

GENERAL: ...Out on the flanks as we are, the FRONT can't see us, but you still need to watch out for THESE bits on the SIDES. THEY can detect SOUNDS.
CAPTAIN: Omnidirectionally?!

GENERAL: I BELIEVE so, yes.
CAPTAIN: So those "side-bits" MIGHT be hearing us RIGHT NOW? We need to ENCODE our intelligence!

WOMAN: Oh, don't worry. I'm NOT AT ALL concerned about your supposed "intelligence."
CAPTAIN: ACCGGKK!! A DEVASTATING SALVO of PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE!
GENERAL: Ignore ALL messages we intercept! They are PROPAGANDA designed to DEMORALIZE us!
WOMAN: Hey! G.I. Joe! Your WIFE is at HOME! She wants to know what we should do about dinner!

tell me all the businesses that inexplicably survived or inexplicably failed in your neighborhood Wondermark #1569; The Foldery has Folded
A couple walks down the street, the man in a turban, the woman in a very high-collared fur coat. This is ASHWAY and BERTREX

A: You know that origami flower shop we keep talking about maybe one day wandering through?
A: I finally had an occasion for which I would have liked some paper flowers. But they’ve closed!

B: That’s a shame, they just opened like five years ago!
B: I wonder how much of our community is powered by people imprudently opening wildly unprofitable businesses, pouring their time and savings into them for the period of exactly one commercial lease, then letting them close.

B: Like, it didn’t turn out to be sustainable, but for a while, you offered some cool origami classes for kids, and some people in the neighborhood have some paper flowers in their homes now? I assume?

B: Sorry it didn’t make you a millionaire, but you shoved the big stone wheel back uphill a few turns, and that helped us all.
A: And, in this metaphor, the big stone wheel is...
B: The thing that’ll smash us all into dust with its uncaring inertia if we don’t hold it at bay with our collective effort, yeah

A: Okay, cool. And our collective effort, in this context, means buying forty-dollar paper flowers?
B: Is THAT how much they cost?
B: I kept meaning to look in the store window when I walked by, but I never managed to tear my eyes away from my phone.
