Build A Belgian Burger: Flemish Style
## Back in the Spring of this year, I visited the Netherlands where I took a look at a village bypass scheme, but this post is from across the border, just outside Antwerp in Belgium. As we cycled to Hulst in the Netherlands from Antwerp, we happened on an interesting road layout on the N70, about 10km west of the city, in Beveren, East Flanders (below). It wasn't something I had on my list to see and it's only after doing a little research have I realised how clever it all is. It's a "hamburger junction", but one with some fancy relish. #### What's a hamburger? In road engineering terms a "hamburger" is a type of roundabout where there is a road straight through the centre ,and which is kind of the patty with the semicircles above and below formed by the circulatory area looking a bit like the two halves of the bun. It's generic and they are quite varied, and often use traffic signals. In the UK, hamburger roundabouts are often signalised and are set up to prioritise the main flow of traffic through the middle with other traffic entering and leaving via the circulatory area. It was a hamburger that we stumbled across at the junction of the N70 Grote Baan and Pareinpark (above). #### Mixed uses This particular location had plenty going on. To the north of the road is a bit of a retail/ industrial park, and to the south, a strip of residential development (and redevelopment) which turns into more residential streets a little further back on each side. The N70 is the main (non-motorway) Ghent to Antwerp road and as well as providing a secondary connection for motor traffic between the two cities, it also provides a local function. The junction isn't unique in this area, there's another one about 1km to the west towards Antwerp which we didn't even notice as we cycled along. From a walking, wheeling and cycling perspective, the N70 has quite a variation in provision. Sometimes people are routed to quieter streets parallel to the main road. There are also shared-use paths, and when there's a bit more street frontage, there's sometimes separate space. The photograph above shows a fairly typical example of a shared path - it's not that wide and was only improved to this standard about five years ago when the hamburger was built. #### Back to the burger In the image below, I have turned on the aerial photography which shows the retail/ industrial complex to the north and the residential development to the south. The road which branches off to the north-west serves the commercial area and perhaps the layout helps that operate; but why not just have a roundabout? The image shows a pale grey road running through the middle and this starts to pull at the purpose. Back in 2020, the junction was a pretty typical inter-urban/ urban fringe road (above). The left turn lane in the centre was to access the commercial area and you can see there's a painted cycle lane. On the right there's a bus stop in a layby which doesn't exactly help with bus priority. And here we find the purpose of the hamburger - it's a bus priority measure. The photograph above shows the westbound approach and there's a fair bit going on here. Just to the left of the image, there's a bus lane to the left of the general traffic lane and this is controlled by a traffic signal. It's hard to make out, but it's actually a tram signal and depicts a horizontal white bar in the upper aspect which means stop. The chequerboard marking shows where the bus lane crosses another road and essentially means "keep clear". Drivers give way to traffic on the circulatory area due to the triangular "shark's teeth" markings. For general traffic on the other side of the road, there are other signals, including the mast arm - we'll see more of these in a while. You can also see a cycle parking shelter in the middle of the junction. The geometry is tight and the curves have an adverse camber to slow drivers down. The block paving is for larger vehicles to overrun if required, but that's a little sketchy when you're on the shared use path to the right! The photograph above is on the same side of the road, but looking east this time. You can just see there is a separate cycle track to the left of the hedge with the footway in a slightly different material. There's the same on the other side and they are actually two-way! You can also just make out the access road to the commercial area on the left. The traffic signal by the red car on the left is to control traffic entering the circulatory area and the one in the centre is for buses leaving the central road. The right hand signal is for buses entering in the junction and again, is a tram signal. #### Getting to the meaty part #### The photograph below is the view east from the centre of the hamburger - the meat in the bun. You can see the bus stop with its shelter. The bus road here is concrete to resist braking and acceleration forces, and to the left, the light grey guidance tactile paving ends at a black square which will be where the front door of the bus stops. The black square is a "tactile ground surface indicator" (TGSI) and is made from neoprene, so it has a slight amount of give to provide a tactile response. It's hard to see, but the mast arm traffic signal to the right of the photograph is showing an amber signal at the bottom (where we would usually expect a green). It was actually flashing which means drivers should slow down and be prepared to give way, which will be to buses leaving or entering the centre of the junction which is an exception to usual roundabout rules. In practice, this means the chequered areas are acting like a level crossing for buses which have absolute priority in this context in the same way as a tram would. The photograph above is from the same location as before, but now looking west. At the opposite bus stop, you can see a high kerb which is compatible with low floor buses to make them almost step-free. There's guardrail to help marshal people to the crossing point (which I am standing near) and the shelter is free of advertising so views through it are clear. You can also see the signals on the mast arm to the right with the amber aspect showing (caught mid-flash once again). Taking a step or two back, the photo shows the crossing that I was standing by in the previous photograph. The crossing is between the two bus stops and a bus driver stopped would see people crossing in front of them. For pedestrians, there are zebra crossings over the two bus roads as well as the general traffic lane in each direction. The tight geometries of the general traffic lanes mean drivers have been slowed before they reach the crossing point. Cycle traffic is required to give way, which is fairly consistent for a road of this class, and for the bus roads, absolute priority is with buses anyway given the general approach taken from tramway design. When we were there, it was fairly easy to crossing as a pedestrian or a cyclist. #### Bun-stoppable The final image (above) is of the commercial access road (Pareinpark). I had to take this from Google because I was too interested in the main layout I didn't think to snap this! You can see from the red surfacing across the junction that the cycle track is two way and cycle traffic has priority over traffic. The problem we found here was the the advertising on the verge to the right of the footway. As we approached the junction, drivers couldn't see us as they approached the junction from the side street and so crossing he junction felt a little precarious. A continuous treatment would have been better from a design priority perspective, but running HGVs over that would destroy it and so a marked (parallel) crossing with a zebra for the pedestrian side would have been better. #### (Nearly) well-done I have had a dig around to see if I could find out more about the scheme that led to the layout that caught my eye, but I couldn't - if you have some insight, please share it as it's good to know the background. It's worth a cruise up and down the N70 here on street view to see other things going on, but it just shows that bus priority can be retrofitted, even where the corridor isn't that wide. The thing I like most about this junction is that it is all very logical and intuitive, even if a little rough around the edges for cycling and I think it's a design we could use in the UK, although the signalling would have to be adapted to our standards. The mapping and associated street view images are all © Google 2026.

…then a jaunt out to the sea, where I happened upon an unattended motor racing circuit. 4/n
A green bicycle stands in front of a large painted wall sign reading “Mascot (R) Workwear
Circuit Zaandvoort” with some red, orange and black stripes. An ordinary bicycle stands in a car parking space labelled “Reserved Safety Car” - but part of the sign is behind a wire so it actually says “eserved afety car”An iconic view of the Zaandvoort start-finish straight, looking toward the coast. The sky is misty, a radar tower (iconic) is in the distance, constructed from triangular frames giving a crooked appearance. The pit lane is below the camera, with a grey concrete outside the garages and a black tarmac pit lane. Blue, yellow and red paint separates the two. Beyond those, concrete barrier and wire fence separates the pit lane from the track. To the right, some orange cones and motorcycles are kind of hanging around. We’re now outside the circuit, in a grandstand, looking back at the pit lane. The podium is visible with. Red and orange colour scheme an “making history” written behind the 2-1-3 stepped podium. The sky is grey. The pit lane is filled with an assortment of vans and ordinary cars, driven by the track marshals, which is how I knew it was lunch time.

It’s a damp day, a reddish paved bike path runs from centre to the left distance. The areas is lightly wooded. A blue sign with white writing states “fietspad” which is, I think a bike path. My green bike is propped to the right, with a wooden rectangular wayfinding sign in front of the bike. My green bike on the top level of a bike parking stand. I wanted to see how much of a mission it was to get this fairly heft bike up there. I’d say that it’s a 7/10 mission. It’s a heavy machine and I just about managed it. My blue coat hangs in a bedraggled manner from an adjacent rack. Other bikes are around. The ceiling is kind of pinkish. Strip lights in the distance. But answer me this, how do the computers know how many free racks there are - I didn’t take a photo but they know how many spaces there are - upper and lower. Looking down the aisle in an underground bike garage. There are hundreds of racks left a right. Upper and lower. Each upper and each lower has two different heights so that adjacent bikes down clash handlebars. 🤯

Bicycle parking area in which can be seen a variety of standard Dutch bikes, including one with a crate, a blue and yellow public transport bike and others, just bikes as transport. My green hire bike is there too. In the middle distance are some blue bollards, red paving, the base of a tree and part of a car. Looking down at the ground. A square blue plate with a white “P” for parking and an outline drawing of a white backfiets cargo bike. A public bike stand. These are great, curvy metal, designed to hold a front wheel but with a really solid upstand for locking the bike to. We’re looking at two bicycle s. The bar lady wasn’t sure, which is incredible as it was a Coach Brewing Co pub. Anyway, it was free because I had the app and it was a welcome offer. In the foreground is a cardboard tray full of a jumble of colourful food which is actually sea bass on some kind of wrap. A wooden fork protrudes to the left and a wooden knife to the right. Fake newspaper lines the tray. A secondary white cardboard tray of chips covered in red dust is in the background. My mashed up SPD cleats. They were like putty. Knock off dodgy version? The image shows the bottom of a bike shoe, facing up, with the SPD cleat visible on the shoe. It’s seen better days. Looks knackered. On my leg, to the right, on top of my grey shorts is a pristine new version ready to be installed. We’re on a country lane. It’s about 5m wide. Hedges line each side. The sky is pale, high-cloudy blue. The road is grey. In the distance an amazing female person on a bike powers off into the distance. It’s an electric bike. There’s a story there. I’ll tell you when we meet. This is a selfie of two people riding bikes. The person nearest the camera is male, wearing a bike helmet, a very dodgy moustache and a blue jersey. He’s clearly some kind of tosspot. In the middle distance, an athlete rides a heritage bicycle dating from the 1990s. They clearly know their stuff, clad in pink and black horizontal stripes. They were, until very recently, flicking the V’s at the photographer, but got bored as he was taking an age. The sky is high and blue/white. Two bikes lean jauntily against the two black upright sign posts. The sky is half blue, half white cloud. A poster in the style of the classic Guinness advert. A cartoon TnuRebel bear sits atop a weathervane with a pint of beer perched on its strapon fake toucan beakTwo bicycle wheels on a train. I chose this as both a Schwalbe-brand. Mine is marathon plus and that’s all that matters. The other is schwalbe but not marathon plus Two white male humans. Clearly reprobates. Both are wearing black and pink striped Lycra tops. The one nearest to the camera has a bike hat and amber spectacles. The further person has the same attire but with a white wind prof later of the kind that only a tosspot would wear. That tosspot is offering a middle finger to the camera. He is wearing spectacles clearly purchased from Amazon but with which he is obviously enamoured. The two figures are clutching bicycles and standing inside a bus shelter. Beyond the shelter is a red brick wall surmounted by greenery. There is a green east bin which received some dead malt loaf wrappers. If you seem Morgan, you’re welcome to tell him that he is a tosspot. I mean it fondly. The bicyle is marked "RIBBLE" on the seat post and down tube. We're on a bicycle, very close to the top tube, on the right hand side, looking down towards the front wheel. The bike frame is black. On the top tube, we see, slightly blurred "RA-ACE". In the centre of the frame are two old-style gear shifters. A sticker between the shifters reads
"EQUIPPED WITH
DURA-ACE
SHIMANO"

Trying out the fediverse for the first time today. I've been reading a lot about it, now it's time to figure out how it works and build an internet home here. My goal is to figure out how I can bring www.gobikecamping.com into the fediverse and help people who love bike touring own their data […]

(Alt text for the previous image cos it didn’t save) A large-ish public transport waiting room. The ceilings high, with white pillars stretching floor to ceiling. Th floor is filled with people waiting with their luggage). Something like that anyway.

Ok, so I have a hot take for you. The passenger experience at #Eurostar #StPancras is, at best, mediocre. Above you, out of sight is the amazing train shed, but you can’t see that when you’ve checked in, because you’re kept in the dungeon , waiting for time to […] [Original post on mastodon.green]

Then there was John Betjeman. 3/n
This is iconic. We’re in the St Pancras arched iron and glass train shed looking towards the clock at the closed end (just past noon). The trains are to the left but not really visible. Close and to the right is a just larger than life size bronze statue of a man in flowing overcoat, left hand to his head, perhaps about to raise his hat. Between him and the clock is the pink neon Tracey Emin words “I want my time with you”

Then there was some underground action 2/n
We are looking down at some stairs as we descend. The treads are patterned with small brass with longer blue rectangles on the front edges. The foot and lower leg of the photographer are in the photo. Black boot, blue trousers. We’re on a station platform. The red front of a train is close to us. It has large windows at the front and white lights. The orange LED display reads “25 Circle Line via King’s Cross St Pancras”

Watch out, I’m on a mission that involves #trains! An early morning at Bridgend and a scenic tour of Wiltshire led to Paddington. This was my rail sale bargain ticket. Wonder where I am going… 1/n
The sky is clear but dark blue. It’s just before dawn. We are on a railway platform, looking down the tracks which are on our right. A set of stairs descends on the far platform, toward us. A pedestrian over bridge crosses the tracks in the middle distance. We are in an arched train shed looking back down the platform. It’s Paddington. The yellow nose of a train is in the foreground. A platform full of people is to the left.

Ok, so this is slightly niche. I left my colleagues at the #GLC #GoldieLookinChain gig to catch the last train home, and Hannah somehow found #AdamHussain who noticed my absence. Anyway, it was #Bridgend #PenYBont where I saw them last, not #Casnewydd

@MikeFromLFE it’s heather Woolley. Dreadful person. At a bare minimum they’d put the shop in a portakabin outside. In happier news, I’m thrilled for Chris and Carly.

…and for how long is the shop out of action? That’s _really_ boring now. Surely Heathr Woolley wouldn’t stand for builders taking any longer than a couple of weeks. #TheArchers

C’mon #Wales #Cymru. We’ve been here before. We’ll be back. I’m old enough to remember when #Cymru could only score points through the boot of #NeilJenkins - and in recent years, he’s been the drinking game - when Neil brings the water on, drink! Now, even he […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
A close up of a rugby short worn by some joker. We can see a red shirt, a white Prince of wales feathers (we need to talk about this) and an under armour logo plus the neck of some Caucasian guy.

Wow, that was a great #KidicalMass in #Barry #Barrybados. Organised by the amazing AB, we were a great gang of people on wheels. It wasn’t far, but the energy was great. We moved from #BarryIsland to the #Knap, with plenty of stops to re-group. I was there […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
We’re beside the sea. To the middle distance over on the right there is a sheltered bay. To the left, leading away is a wide promenade, with prominent puddles. The subject of the photo is the large number of people, mostly dressed sensibly, some with high viz, some in Halloween kit, but all with a bike or scooter. The sky is cloudless blue, despite the fact that the rain was hammering down ten minutes previously We’re on a wide tarmac promenade. A group of people on bikes is riding away from the camera. We seem to be part of the group. To the left, a grey pebble beach and a sliver of grey sea. To the right, we glimpse another body of water, lower than the promenade. That’s an ornamental lake. The sky is blue with low white fluffy clouds on the horizon, which is formed by a rise in the land. Building, houses in the far distance to the right, trees to the far distance left. The large white flag on one of the bikes reads “kidical mass Barry”

Morning all. I’m recovering from the most joyful evening that I’ve had for a long time. Yes, that’s right, #GoldieLookinChain were in #Bridgend, and so was I. It was wonderful, complete nonsense, offensive, rude and ignorant nonsense. These guys are so slick […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
We’re in a crowd, a couple of people back from the front, looking at some middle aged white guys on stage. They’re dressed in sportswear, performing to the crowd, holding microphones. Red, green and white lights illuminate the scene.
