Build A Belgian Burger: Flemish Style
## Back in the Spring of this year, I visited the Netherlands where I took a look at a village bypass scheme, but this post is from across the border, just outside Antwerp in Belgium. As we cycled to Hulst in the Netherlands from Antwerp, we happened on an interesting road layout on the N70, about 10km west of the city, in Beveren, East Flanders (below). It wasn't something I had on my list to see and it's only after doing a little research have I realised how clever it all is. It's a "hamburger junction", but one with some fancy relish. #### What's a hamburger? In road engineering terms a "hamburger" is a type of roundabout where there is a road straight through the centre ,and which is kind of the patty with the semicircles above and below formed by the circulatory area looking a bit like the two halves of the bun. It's generic and they are quite varied, and often use traffic signals. In the UK, hamburger roundabouts are often signalised and are set up to prioritise the main flow of traffic through the middle with other traffic entering and leaving via the circulatory area. It was a hamburger that we stumbled across at the junction of the N70 Grote Baan and Pareinpark (above). #### Mixed uses This particular location had plenty going on. To the north of the road is a bit of a retail/ industrial park, and to the south, a strip of residential development (and redevelopment) which turns into more residential streets a little further back on each side. The N70 is the main (non-motorway) Ghent to Antwerp road and as well as providing a secondary connection for motor traffic between the two cities, it also provides a local function. The junction isn't unique in this area, there's another one about 1km to the west towards Antwerp which we didn't even notice as we cycled along. From a walking, wheeling and cycling perspective, the N70 has quite a variation in provision. Sometimes people are routed to quieter streets parallel to the main road. There are also shared-use paths, and when there's a bit more street frontage, there's sometimes separate space. The photograph above shows a fairly typical example of a shared path - it's not that wide and was only improved to this standard about five years ago when the hamburger was built. #### Back to the burger In the image below, I have turned on the aerial photography which shows the retail/ industrial complex to the north and the residential development to the south. The road which branches off to the north-west serves the commercial area and perhaps the layout helps that operate; but why not just have a roundabout? The image shows a pale grey road running through the middle and this starts to pull at the purpose. Back in 2020, the junction was a pretty typical inter-urban/ urban fringe road (above). The left turn lane in the centre was to access the commercial area and you can see there's a painted cycle lane. On the right there's a bus stop in a layby which doesn't exactly help with bus priority. And here we find the purpose of the hamburger - it's a bus priority measure. The photograph above shows the westbound approach and there's a fair bit going on here. Just to the left of the image, there's a bus lane to the left of the general traffic lane and this is controlled by a traffic signal. It's hard to make out, but it's actually a tram signal and depicts a horizontal white bar in the upper aspect which means stop. The chequerboard marking shows where the bus lane crosses another road and essentially means "keep clear". Drivers give way to traffic on the circulatory area due to the triangular "shark's teeth" markings. For general traffic on the other side of the road, there are other signals, including the mast arm - we'll see more of these in a while. You can also see a cycle parking shelter in the middle of the junction. The geometry is tight and the curves have an adverse camber to slow drivers down. The block paving is for larger vehicles to overrun if required, but that's a little sketchy when you're on the shared use path to the right! The photograph above is on the same side of the road, but looking east this time. You can just see there is a separate cycle track to the left of the hedge with the footway in a slightly different material. There's the same on the other side and they are actually two-way! You can also just make out the access road to the commercial area on the left. The traffic signal by the red car on the left is to control traffic entering the circulatory area and the one in the centre is for buses leaving the central road. The right hand signal is for buses entering in the junction and again, is a tram signal. #### Getting to the meaty part #### The photograph below is the view east from the centre of the hamburger - the meat in the bun. You can see the bus stop with its shelter. The bus road here is concrete to resist braking and acceleration forces, and to the left, the light grey guidance tactile paving ends at a black square which will be where the front door of the bus stops. The black square is a "tactile ground surface indicator" (TGSI) and is made from neoprene, so it has a slight amount of give to provide a tactile response. It's hard to see, but the mast arm traffic signal to the right of the photograph is showing an amber signal at the bottom (where we would usually expect a green). It was actually flashing which means drivers should slow down and be prepared to give way, which will be to buses leaving or entering the centre of the junction which is an exception to usual roundabout rules. In practice, this means the chequered areas are acting like a level crossing for buses which have absolute priority in this context in the same way as a tram would. The photograph above is from the same location as before, but now looking west. At the opposite bus stop, you can see a high kerb which is compatible with low floor buses to make them almost step-free. There's guardrail to help marshal people to the crossing point (which I am standing near) and the shelter is free of advertising so views through it are clear. You can also see the signals on the mast arm to the right with the amber aspect showing (caught mid-flash once again). Taking a step or two back, the photo shows the crossing that I was standing by in the previous photograph. The crossing is between the two bus stops and a bus driver stopped would see people crossing in front of them. For pedestrians, there are zebra crossings over the two bus roads as well as the general traffic lane in each direction. The tight geometries of the general traffic lanes mean drivers have been slowed before they reach the crossing point. Cycle traffic is required to give way, which is fairly consistent for a road of this class, and for the bus roads, absolute priority is with buses anyway given the general approach taken from tramway design. When we were there, it was fairly easy to crossing as a pedestrian or a cyclist. #### Bun-stoppable The final image (above) is of the commercial access road (Pareinpark). I had to take this from Google because I was too interested in the main layout I didn't think to snap this! You can see from the red surfacing across the junction that the cycle track is two way and cycle traffic has priority over traffic. The problem we found here was the the advertising on the verge to the right of the footway. As we approached the junction, drivers couldn't see us as they approached the junction from the side street and so crossing he junction felt a little precarious. A continuous treatment would have been better from a design priority perspective, but running HGVs over that would destroy it and so a marked (parallel) crossing with a zebra for the pedestrian side would have been better. #### (Nearly) well-done I have had a dig around to see if I could find out more about the scheme that led to the layout that caught my eye, but I couldn't - if you have some insight, please share it as it's good to know the background. It's worth a cruise up and down the N70 here on street view to see other things going on, but it just shows that bus priority can be retrofitted, even where the corridor isn't that wide. The thing I like most about this junction is that it is all very logical and intuitive, even if a little rough around the edges for cycling and I think it's a design we could use in the UK, although the signalling would have to be adapted to our standards. The mapping and associated street view images are all © Google 2026.

In the foreground is a small plastic bottle of delicious orange juice (with bits) held in my hand next to two “boreks” - pastry tubes filled with spinach and feta. The cute is slightly elevated (at the top of some steps) above a. Bicycle parking area in which can be seen a variety of standard Dutch bikes, including one with a crate, a blue and yellow public transport bike and others, just bikes as transport. My green hire bike is there too. In the middle distance are some blue bollards, red paving, the base of a tree and part of a car. Looking down at the ground. A square blue plate with a white “P” for parking and an outline drawing of a white backfiets cargo bike. A public bike stand. These are great, curvy metal, designed to hold a front wheel but with a really solid upstand for locking the bike to. We’re looking at two bicycle s. In the foreground, a bright green bike with a u-shaped tube, black chain guard, black single pannier and strong looking wheels, clad in marathon plus tyres. The bike has the words “Green Bikes” on the down tube. Beyond ot is a nondescript but functional transport bike. Beyond that, greenery. The ground is rectangular reddish paving.

The bar lady wasn’t sure, which is incredible as it was a Coach Brewing Co pub. Anyway, it was free because I had the app and it was a welcome offer. In the foreground is a cardboard tray full of a jumble of colourful food which is actually sea bass on some kind of wrap. A wooden fork protrudes to the left and a wooden knife to the right. Fake newspaper lines the tray. A secondary white cardboard tray of chips covered in red dust is in the background. My mashed up SPD cleats. They were like putty. Knock off dodgy version? The image shows the bottom of a bike shoe, facing up, with the SPD cleat visible on the shoe. It’s seen better days. Looks knackered. On my leg, to the right, on top of my grey shorts is a pristine new version ready to be installed. We’re on a country lane. It’s about 5m wide. Hedges line each side. The sky is pale, high-cloudy blue. The road is grey. In the distance an amazing female person on a bike powers off into the distance. It’s an electric bike. There’s a story there. I’ll tell you when we meet. This is a selfie of two people riding bikes. The person nearest the camera is male, wearing a bike helmet, a very dodgy moustache and a blue jersey. He’s clearly some kind of tosspot. In the middle distance, an athlete rides a heritage bicycle dating from the 1990s. They clearly know their stuff, clad in pink and black horizontal stripes. They were, until very recently, flicking the V’s at the photographer, but got bored as he was taking an age. The sky is high and blue/white. The one nearest to the camera has a bike hat and amber spectacles. The further person has the same attire but with a white wind prof later of the kind that only a tosspot would wear. That tosspot is offering a middle finger to the camera. He is wearing spectacles clearly purchased from Amazon but with which he is obviously enamoured. Today - March Equinox - We're looking down a country lane, with tall hedges on each side. The hedges are dark, in contrast the the sun, low-mid-centre image. It's pale orange, obscured behind a veil of high thin cloud. In the distance, an arched stone railway viaduct crosses from left to right. We can see one complee arch with the sea through it, and a partial arch on each side of the main arch. In the middle distance, a wooden telegraph pole proturdes from the hedge. This is my view-gnomon, I watch how the sun appears to move in the sky in relation to this pole.December Solstice - The same view as the March photo. The view is dark, almost black, no sun is visible as it has not yet risen. The sky is covered by a thin veil of high cloudSeptember equinox - very similar to the March view, but here, the sky is clear and the hedges are more leafyJune solstice - I long for these summer days. The sun is far over to the left, almost out of frame, and high in the sky. The sky is clear blue, and the hedges are fresh and green

A few weeks ago, I wandered down to Clapham in South London for a chat with Conor of Global Cycling Network to help peel back the layers of a junction dubbed as one of Britain's most dangerous for cycling. With @psimonk and @ianwalker youtu.be/d1BhyZSrZU8?si=5SYNKyYb4c3…

As the sun rose this morning, I somehow find myself on the continent of Europe. Yes, it’s true. I am on another #biketooter adventure. Let’s see where I end up. This thread may or may not have several roots…1/n
A blue touring bicycle, heavily laden with panniers leans against two #WorldBollards. In the distance to the right is a ship. It’s the Stena Britannica. The middle distance is filled with an empty car park. A sign announces this to be “Hoek van Holland Haven”. The sky is blue!

Morning all. I’ve been quiet recently, but I’m still doing the #Biketooter thing most days. Here’s my usual photo from my commute, heading down into #Porthkerry park in #Barrybados here in #Cymru. This week’s photo from the #solstice is compared with the […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
Looking down a country lane edged by tall green hedges. The sky is blue. The sun is in the upper left of the photo. In the middle distance, an arched stone railway viaduct crosses from left to right.

I take these photos so I can enjoy the progress of the sun across the sky as the seasons change. Here at the summer solstice, it’s high left, in December it’s low to the right.

This photo is dedicated to everybody who rides a bike for transport and especially to those who ride year round.

I’m particularly enjoying the warm weather at the moment which means that I don’t need gloves for warmth, and thinking back to the depths of winter when even withmy warm gloves with pogies, I’d still arrive at work frozen.

In the mornings this week, the dips in the landscape contained delicious, cool air, but in winter, they’re punishingly cold.

Whatever you ride, keep on keeping on. The same view, but in the depths of December. This is the winter solstice 2024. The sky is dark, the sun not yet risen from the bottom right. A smudge of orange hints at the sunrise to come The same view at the March equinox. The sun is mid frame, the hedgerows not yet full of life. …and at the September equinox. The hedges are tall and green. The sun is mid frame, with wispy high cloud. There’s a bit of lens flare.

There are benefits from finishing late at work (parcel guy was late). Now I have to wait for the next train. #Barrybados #CraftBeer #Cymru
We’re in a bar. It’s quiet. In front of us is a table. It’s light wood, and square. We’re close, sitting at the table. Immediately in front of us is a pint glass with a third of a pint of cloudy yellows beer. A round logo on the glass states “Craft Republic”
Flanking the glass, behind and to the side are two silver beer cans. Each has a label. In printed type is “Craft Republic” for that’s where we are. The left can’s label is handwritten “Full Circle
I'm not a
Sailor I’m
the Captain
11/5
6.5% 500ml”

The other can reads
“PollyS
Sonar
Bamboo
11/5
6.8% 500ml”

Well, the #UKSwifts are back - but what’s going on here? Somehow, the Swift has tangled itself with a fledgling sparrow. They were locked by the wing feathers, with the sparrow hanging out of the box. Nature took a long time to take its course, but they’re […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
We’re under the eaves of a house, looking into the setting sun which is touching the roofs of distant houses. Under the eaves of this house, a wooden bird nest box is seen from the short end. On the side away from the house is a tangle of feathers, which on closer inspection is a fledgling sparrow, and the long wing feathers of a swift. It’s very hard to discern what’s going on.

My first post as a member of the #FediverseCyclingClub! I was late finishing at work yesterday, was hungry, fancied some #sglodion, so went in search. There’s a BK near-ish, but I thought “no! Support the independent chip shops” so nipped over to #BarryIsland […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
A close up of a bag of chips (not enough salt) wrapped in white paper, open to show the golden chips. Just beyond those are the black saddle (on the right) and silver straight handlebars of a small folding bike. The rest of the bike is not visible. Beyond that is a brown stone platform edge, for we are at a #railway station. Beyond that, a gap which contains two parallels railway tracks (not visible), then beyond that, the far platform, containing a facade of red brick (c1980), dark blue panels to approx 1metre height, surmounted by windows containing a closed cafe. Above those is a corrugated polymer roof. We’re looking up through that. It’s opaque, but the sun has cast a shadow on it.
The station sign in the distance on the far platform is too blurred to read, but declares this to be Y Barri - Barry

So, I went to #Lyon. It was great. I rode bikes, the family came with me. They want to get there quickly. I want to go on trains. Classic compromise. We’ll fly out together, and I can get the train back if I like. Ok then. 1/n
We’re outdoors. There’s a mostly pink and purple three dimensional sign. The letters are about 120cm tall. It reads “ONLYLYON” with the perspective coming toward us, with O in the distance. The best end of the 3D word thing is a lion. Spray painted. Purpley pink. The sky is blue. The ground is beige gravel. A bush protrudes from behind the lion.

#gogglebox, but watching French adverts. You heard it here first.
A photo of a television showing a man with a miserable face, grasping his shoulder. It’s an advert for some kind of painkiller. Marine le Pen. On telly this ain’t going to end well. A screen showing text saying “Alinea”. It’s an advert for something French.

Oh dear. Half day at work and my #bike just stopped at the Blue Anchor in #Aberthaw. Must get that fixed. #Biketooter
Ok, we’re in the United Kingdom. The scene is mostly grey stone. The roof is thatched. It’s a classic British pub, but a bit too close to see the whole of it. In the left foreground is a pint glass with dark beer and a creamy head. It’s Theakstons Old Peculier. Will I stay for a second? There’s a bike in the frame, obscured by a wall. The drop handlebars and saddle are visible.

Morning #Biketooter gang! The morning commute is getting lighter! The streetlights were turning off as I departed, and the backlight on my bike computer turned off at 07:42 - that was 07:53 last week. Here’s the view from my viewpoint in #Barrybados #Cymru, with an extra bonus pic.
A picture looking into the dawn sky. The sky is grey blue at the zenith, peachy orange towards the ground. We’re in a wide valley. On either side of the frame a bare tree branches. The focus of the image is an arched stone railway viaduct which crosses the frame, with its flat top across the centre of the image. It has tall legs which taper slightly to the top. The legs are joined by semicircular arches. Two are clearly visible in the centre of the image, two more to the left are obscured by trees. Three to the right are also partly obscured. The rising sun is obscured by the central leg. A view down a country lane, bounded by tall hedges. This a a picture of stark contrast. The foreground is dark, with a lighter ribbon of road leading away from us. The focus of the image is the sky which occupies the top half. The sky is dark grey/blue at its zenith, blending to peachy orange at the horizon. The sun is rising to the mid right of the image. An arched stone railway viaduct is silhouetted in the distance.

Here you go, #BikeTooter gang. My commute this evening took me through the Island Road #tunnel in #Barrybados. It’s been pimped with lights on the arched roof - the lights change colour, and move along their tracks. Sometimes they’re 🌈, other times red, and […] [Original post on mastodon.green]
We’re in a tunnel under a railway line. It’s about 30 metres long. On the left is a rough stone block wall. Leaning against that wall is a bicycle. We’re at the level of the top of the wheel, looking slightly up to the tunnel roof. We can see four parallel tracks for lights, leading away from us. The nearest is white, next is yellowyorange, then blue and white, then blue and white again. In the middle distance, these light tracks step upwards, indicating a change in height of the tunnel roof. The distant lights are more purple. It’s not very clear, but the tunnel arches up from left to right and is made of brick.
The bicycle has a red tail light, a small Welsh flag, and a yellow square field with a black camera enforcement icon.
