Glåssen | 2026 Yarn Advent + MKAL

This holiday season, Wöldten is offering something completely new: a yarn advent and mystery knit along, all in one.

Glåssen is a scarf built from sixteen short row shapes worked in asymmetric intervals. One main motif recurs throughout, echoing back and repeating out of sequence, mirrored both horizontally and vertically, the way a phrase gets picked up and reworked in improvisational jazz.

The design draws on the visual language of the late 1960s: mod shapes, pop art minimalism, bold graphic edges. But where that era moved fast and loud, this design moves slow and quiet.

Starting December 1st, you'll receive one small update a day through Ravelry: a section of the pattern, a work of art to sit with, sometimes a bit of music or a writing prompt. By December 25th, you'll have the full pattern in hand, along with a bonus pattern variation.

There are two color stories this year, each a genuine mystery until your bobbins arrive.

Loamwood
An old growth palette pulled up from the forest floor. Imagine sinking your feet into a mossy bank while listening to the sound of a distant waterfall. Dragonflies dart overhead, and you're drawn to the beauty in the details below.

Skyfeld
The rain clouds have dispersed, leaving the sky tinged in shades of pink grading into a beautiful blue-violet. Birdsong brightens your day, and a field of flowers welcomes you.

Kits include 24 hand-dyed bobbins from Plied Yarns and three skeins of Pokainu Yarns Bluefaced Leicester in Driftwood.

Not interested in a kit? The pattern is available on its own too. Purchase through Ravelry. A group has been set up there as well for you to join in the conversation.

Pre-order is now open and closes September 29th at midnight. Kit quantities are limited and will go on a first come, first served basis.

*NEW DESIGN* The Tintype Hat joins my Tintype Collection with its elongated hexagonal short-row shape motif. Pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib... Yarn courtesy of Spincycle. 🧶 #knitting #knitsky #knitweardesigner #craftsky
A model is shown wearing a long olive green cloak with hand knit hat. The hat is intentionally shown inside out and is completely reversible.

The Tintype Hat carries the same elongated windows found throughout the Tintype Collections: recessed stockinette sinking beneath raised garter walls, like an old photograph developing in the dark. Two styles. Six variations. Twelve if worked in a single hue, where only shadow defines the shape.

It is reversible. Fold the brim along its band of slipped stitches for something tighter, closer fitting. Either way, the short-row windows hold their quiet intrigue, each one a fragment of a story only half revealed.

Knit here in @spincycleyarns Wilder and Nocturne, Snakeskin.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but not because I haven’t been knitting. There are several big things in the works with more to come… In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek at my newest design scheduled for publication next week! The Tintype Hat will join my Tintype Collection. 🧶 #knitsky #knits

This design uses their Wilder in Dark Grey with Nocturne in Snakeskin which is a gradient in green tones that transition from a deep forest/hunter green into a beautiful Kelly green.

Introducing the Ferrotype Scarf 🧶 Pattern now available on Ravelry www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib... Center cast-on, asymmetric short-row shape motif, slipped stitches, I-cord edge. 29-page pattern designed with love! #knitting #knitsky #knittersofbluesky #woldten
A scarf of shown spread out on the beach at Anchorage Provincial Park, Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada. The rising tide almost touches the far end as the setting sun illuminates its leading edge.

Made with Pokainu Yarn from www.woldten.com in a beautiful 100% natural Romney in Birch with two kettle dyed skeins in Honey Locust and Quarry Hill.

Reminiscent of hand weaving techniques, this design embraces the art of optical illusion with increasing and decreasing slipped stitches in a grid like pattern interspersed with short row shapes that travel along the perimeter and follow the corners.

Part of the evolution of my Tintype series of designs.

#showmeyourknits WIP Week Edition I just cast on my ninth Happy Sleepy™! This one is a gift and will soon be making an international trip, but not before I work out the charting details for an Argyle pattern! Details in alt text. Pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...
What’s on My Needles?

I'm currently knitting up my ninth Happy Sleepy™! From the moment I completed my very first one, my mind started racing with ideas for different 'pajamas' to decorate my little guy with. This creative spark led me down an exciting (and challenging!) path: attempting to work stranded chart patterns across sections of short-row shaping.

I'll be honest: I'm still working out the details. I haven't been able to find any resources on how to do this properly, so I'm essentially winging it in my quest to create the perfect argyle pattern! The two argyle versions already on my Ravelry projects page aren't quite perfect yet, but this current project marks my third attempt at cracking the code on stranded knitting across short-row shapes.

While perfecting this technique, I'm also dreaming up a Holiday Happy Sleepy™, so stay tuned for that festive surprise!

Right now, the project on my needles is all about working out the details for my "Argyle" pattern. Once I've got it just right, I'll create a chart that will become part of the official pattern. Good news for early supporters: anyone who has already purchased this pattern will automatically receive the update, plus one additional stranded chart as a special holiday surprise!

The yarn I'm using is Junction Fiber Mill's Making Tracks DK in the colorway "In The Clearing". Because I was able to visit the mill in person, I had the luxury of hunting through their inventory to find this beautifully delicate, pale version of the colorway, and I absolutely love it! You can see it in the photo below on the right, with more typical skeins of this colorway on the left. Honestly, I love them all!

“A Portrait of an Artist” c.2025 The MoMA
“A Portrait of an Artist” c.2025

I recently met up with a group of friends I’ve known for years in NYC, though a couple of them I was meeting in person for the first time. We connected years ago while working on a competitive team playing GISH (the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt). Every year when the list dropped for this week-long hunt, we’d stay up all hours of the night completing tasks, with the hope of one day meeting each other in person. While we never won a hunt together before GISH ended, we vowed to meet up someday.

Last year, several of us met in Austin, Texas and had a blast. This year was NYC, and a couple people who couldn’t make it to Texas came to the city. We still have a few people from our team we haven’t met yet, so maybe another year!

This photo was taken at the MoMA, where we enjoyed members-only early entry and had fun as we always do, taking random photos and just enjoying time together. This is my attempt at posing for “A Portrait of an Artist.“

If you’d like to see some of our crazy entries, check out these accounts @gishteamgoats @teamgoatzilla on Instagram. (After the closure of GISH, another scavenger hunt group was formed called “The Rogue Hunt”, where I participate each year in August now. If you’re interested in playing for good, you can learn more and sign up at @theroguehunt.)

#showmeyourknits #socktober Original Happy Sleepy by @artofmagda.bsky.social is joined by my latest #knitting pattern for the same frolicking playful creature. If you enjoy knitting socks, this is made in a similar way. Details in alt text. Pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...
Two “Happy Sleepy” abstract animals are shown balanced on a piece of driftwood by the shores of Lake Champlain. The one in the back was hand sewn in upholstery fabric by artist, Magda Wojtyra, the original designer of the Happy Sleepy. The one in the foreground was hand knit by knitwear designer, Ona Wöldten, based on a knitting pattern for the same playful creature.

The pattern begins with the equivalent of two toe-up hand knit socks, which can either be done singly or two-at-a-time. Short-row shapes are used to give the body form and the whimsical curve, and two half moon eyes are hand embroidered on after completion.

This is a great stash buster project and makes the perfect gift for the holidays. Use as an emotional support friend or cozy neck pillow. The Happy Sleepy will definitely invoke smiles in anyone who sees it.

One more Happy Sleepy™ for you this week. This one I’ve named, “The Hipster”. I’m absolutely enamored with this little guy! I gave him a pin-striped suit, plaid pants, and a vintage key to unlock any door he may encounter. He holds the secret! 🧶💕 Pattern on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...
A hand knit plush object or tactile sculpture is photographed on a teak tabletop. He is knit to look like he is wearing plaid pants with a belt and buttons at the crotch like vintage undergarments. An antique key hangs from his belt. His upper portion is hand embroidered to look like pin-stripe suiting. Two smiling half moon eyes are also embroidered on. Next to him is a vintage woven cap and steampunk glasses.

The knitting pattern for this little guy is very basic, but I’ve been trying to work out stranded knitting charts to give it more whimsy and character. Figuring this out across sections of short-row though creates unusual effects and currently I don’t feel like I’ve got it perfected. I’m going to keep trying to work it out to see if I can achieve better results.

I do though still adore this one. Even with all the quirks, I think he’s perfect!

This is my Happy Sleepy™ that I’m familiarly calling “the Artist”. It was one of my first working prototypes for this design. I wanted to see what would happen if I added stranded patterning. It still makes me smile so much! Although not part of the pattern, I’m still playing around with ideas.
A whimsical plush object/tactile sculpture rests atop a woven pillow. Both are heavily patterned causing the object to almost disappear as if wearing camouflage. A container is visible on the right of the image with paintbrushes. The object is embellished with hand sewn details - a belt, and little nubs, along with its iconic half moon smiling eyes.

Two hand-knit minimalist objects appear on a worn wooden deck surrounded by daffodils. They are each made using natural sheep’s wool. The one on the foreground is a light grey color and the one in the background is a warm brown. Each has the iconic half moon smiling eyes that identify it as a Happy Sleepy design.

The response to yesterday's Happy Sleepy™ pattern release has been absolutely incredible! This little abstract creature is already winning hearts with its personality - those sweet minimalist eyes that transform from wide-awake wonder to peaceful slumber with just a flip.

What makes this design so special goes far beyond its adorable factor. This project represents a beautiful story of global creative connection - from the original 2001 sewn prototype by Polish artist, Magda Wojtyra (inspired by an illustration from her partner Marc Ngui), to our months of collaborative development.

The construction is familiar yet completely fresh - starting with toe-up sock techniques, then transforming through strategic short-row shaping into this delightfully dynamic creature. The pattern includes gorgeous illustrated charts, making every step a visual journey.

At just 8" x 15", your Happy Sleepy™ is perfectly sized for travel adventures while embodying the artists' beautiful philosophy: "Whether happily proactive or sleepily withdrawn, they are avatars of our freedom to choose."

Test knitters have already brought such personality and love to this project - each one unique, each one a reminder that through craft we're creating tangible symbols of joy and free will.

As the artists share: "Making fine craft is a physical meditation that can restore our spirits because creating puts us on the making, versus just consuming, side of culture."

Ready to join this global creative conversation? Find Happy Sleepy™ on Ravelry today!

Ready to embark on a whimsical knitting adventure? ✨ Today marks an exciting milestone as I introduce something completely different from my usual collection - the Happy Sleepy™ knitting pattern, now available on Ravelry! www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...
Image: a whimsical hand-knit abstract animal with minimalist smiling eyes and wearing a pair of blue lensed steampunk style glasses rests atop an assortment of travel maps and visitor brochures. A walking stick with telescope spyglass in the handle sits nearby.

This adorable abstract creature is a delightful departure that blends my signature short-row techniques with pure joy and whimsy. When right-side up, those minimalist eyes sparkle with happiness, but flip them upside down and they're peacefully sleeping - truly embodying our freedom to choose between energetic exploration and restful retreat.

Born from an incredible international collaboration with award-winning artists Magda Wojtyra and Marc Ngui from Windsor, Canada, this pattern represents the beautiful connections that unite us across borders through craft and creativity. What started as a chance discovery on Bluesky has blossomed into a meaningful partnership and friendship.

The construction is surprisingly familiar yet entirely fresh - beginning like toe-up socks but transforming into something magical through clever short-row shaping and thoughtful details. At 8" wide and 15" tall, this little world traveler is ready for any adventure you have planned.

This collaboration reminds us that creating puts us on the making side of culture - a physical meditation that restores our spirits. As the artists beautifully express: these enlightened beings never forget their freedom of choice, whether zooming around with excitement or dreaming in peaceful slumber.

A large hand knit shawl is shown wrapped around a vintage dress form on the shores of Lake Champlain.

The Cyanotype Shawl represents the evolution of short-row shape motifs within the knitting lexicon. When combined with the mosaic knitting technique of slipping stitches, individual rows are worked to create dynamic optical effects.

This incredible shawl measures 28”x102”, but can easily be modified to produce a shorter length wrap. The pattern comes with a beautifully designed graphic rendering to easily visualize the distinct elements that make up this shawl.

Working with @vermontfibershed Shetland wool and gradient yarn by @freiafibers the motif undulates from areas of intensely saturated hues to more subtle shifts in tone.

This is poetry in hand knitting design!

“Designer Kits” are now available on my website. Visit www.woldten.com/designer-kits to find new curated kits for my most two most recent designs, the Ambrotype Scarf and the Cyanotype Shawl. Kits include a full-color printed pattern and all the yarn needed to make the featured design.
Three cakes of Freia Fine Handpaint Yarns gradient fiber are shown on a moss covered rock together with several skeins of Pokainu Yarns beautiful Shetland Wool. The gradients range from a lovely saturated cornflower or periwinkle blue into a soft honey tone and finally into a rich amber. The accompanying Shetland is in “Truffle”, a pale tannish color.

Wild fern grow along the edge of the rock framing the image in verdant green.

These yarns illustrate what is included in one of Ona Wöldten’s new designer kits along with a printed pattern, lavender sachet, and artist gift card.

*NEW DESIGN * The Cyanotype Shawl Short-row shape motifs have an optical effect when paired with mosaic slipped stitch details in this oversized shawl full of drama and poetic grace. Pattern on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib... Designer Kits on Wöldten: www.woldten.com/designer-kit...

A large hand knit shawl is shown draped around a dress form on the rocky shores of Lake Champlain. The shawl is knit using garter stitch horizontal rows with stockinette short row shapes that are layered with mosaic slipped stitch columns. Beautiful indigo colors fade from a deep saturated tone to a pale periwinkle blue.

DESCRIPTION:
The Cyanotype Shawl is part of the evolution of my Tintype Collection, a group of designs that continues my work in the field of short-row pattern motifs. This body of work highlights the way color changing and gradient yarns move throughout a design. This design expands upon my knitting vocabulary, incorporating the use of the principles of mosaic knitting and slipped stitches to create a grid-like pattern without the use of stranding.

INSPIRATION:
This design was inspired by the work of Armondo Thomas “Mondo” Guerra, an American fashion designer who finished as runner-up on Season 8 of Project Runway. The specific design that influenced this pattern is a bold, graphic, black-and-white, op-art printed, sleeveless blouse that was featured in Episode 10 of the season. The complete work is bold and striking in both its conceptual statement and visual presence.

**New Design** The Tintype Blanket This is my newest design in the Tintype series and features linear sections of garter stitch rows with an asymmetric column of elongated hexagonal short-row shapes. Pattern available through Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...
The Tintype Blanket is a large throw or wrap composed of a series of elongated hexagonal shapes that are intentionally positioned off-center as viewed vertically. The location of them from left to right is also framed in an asymmetric manner. This style of composition stems from my love of Japanese design aesthetics. The resulting work is both modern and timeless. This design is part of my Tintype Collection, a series of designs that continues my work in the field of short-row pattern motifs. This body of work highlights the way color changing and gradient yarns move throughout a design.

My model stands in a field of goldenrod holding the blanket outstretched behind her. The setting sun illuminates the pattern motif.

DIMENSIONS:
Blanket measures 48” x 84”

TECHNIQUES:
Techniques used in this design are garter and stockinette stitch involving both knitting and purling as well as the double stitch technique of forming short row shapes. A continuous i-cord edge is used to frame the work.

DIAGRAMS:
This pattern comes with written instruction along with a detailed vector diagram for both color placement and knitting order progression.

#showmeyourknits Stripes Week This is a great follow up to my last post. Frequently when I’m trying to choose an image to submit for a scavenger hunt challenge I struggle with knowing which to pick. These were other fun options. [see prompt in previous post.] @theroguehunt.bsky.social 🧶 #knitting
Knit sweater vest in large stripes of black and yellow shown on a young person who is on the street and lined up with the road separating lines. This is an image from the same photography session with a longer view towards the local gas station and distant vehicles.

Here my daughter laughs while trying to get into position to line up with the road. Image taken from a different angle to see what the lighting looked like on this side facing the crossing walk.

For one week out of every year, I participate in an annual scavenger hunt. It used to be known as GISH, but when that ended another group formed called The Rogue Hunt. This is an image from one item in this year’s hunt. Read alt text for details. @theroguehunt.bsky.social @mishacollins.bsky.social
Item No. 030
Challenge Prompt: (Image) Knit or crochet a sweater, vest, or dress that disappears into the surroundings. Photograph someone wearing your creation. They and the rest of the outfit should be their normal wear so that only the knitted / crocheted part of the outfit blends in with the background.

When I first read this, I was immediately imagining working with some kind of camouflage yarn color and knitting up a vest and then photographing it out in the woods. But I didn’t have any great yarn in these tones and the idea seemed to ordinary. As I continued to think what I could knit in a day and then photograph on a model, stripes seemed the easiest way to go. Which led me to thinking where stripes exist in my surroundings for a photo - which led to the lines on the road!

Sweater vest knit using black primary yarn from Plied Yarn Company with a golden yellow from Madelinetosh.

I convinced my daughter to model in the middle of the road at night. Luckily our town is pretty quiet at night. 😂 But we still had to keep running back and forth when a car would come by. Finally got some great photos! I love the images and the memories of it even more!

I see so many people that use hashtags for knitting when what they are showing in their photos is actually crochet work. It makes me curious if this word is interchangeable in other cultures/languages? #knitting v. #crochet ?
