20 short stories with sharp teeth, each a small disaster of its own. If you like Black Mirror, but want something shorter, sharper, and less convinced the future is the problem, Shortcomings might be your thing. Get it here. #authorsky #booksky #writersky #indiesky

October is spooky season. Ghosts. Monsters. Haunted houses. People pretending to enjoy pumpkin spice. But honestly, nothing in horror is quite as frightening as the real things people do to each other, to themselves, and then somehow explain as normal. Anyway, Shortcomings is out now.

Shortcomings is a short stories collection for people who don't listen to Ed Sheeran.

A cactus with boundaries. A bullet with delusions of grandeur. A prayer answered far too literally. An algorithm that knows you better than you’d like. Sharp little stories with sharp little teeth. Out today. #authorsky #writersky #booksky #indiebook #newbook #indiewriter

Shortcomings is my sixth book. It’s 20 short stories about the human condition, which is a polite way of saying people are a problem. Between 300 and 800 words. Each a small disaster of its own. Good for readers who like their fiction short, strange, and bleakly funny. wojdynot.es/sc

The victims do not care which flag was painted on the bomb, or which god was invoked to guide it there. A dead kid is a dead kid, and you’re an evil cunt if you justify any of them dying. #freepalestine

If it’s unacceptable when Russia bombs Ukrainian schools and hospitals, and it's unacceptable when Iran kills its own people for defying the ayatollahs, then it's unacceptable when Israel kills tens of thousands of women and children in Gaza, and when the USA kills hundreds of children in Iran.

Americans should be banned from choosing their president. It’s too important a vote to leave in the hands of Americans. #maga

We’ve stopped using “brb” because we’re never really offline anymore. We’ve stopped using “afk” because we’re never really away from a keyboard anymore. We’ve stopped using “rotfl” because at our age, if we hit the floor, we might not get back up.

Humanity isn’t dying out. Some people are just upset the babies being born don't look like them. White folk don’t want to become marginalised because they’re afraid they’ll get the same treatment they’ve been giving to marginalised groups for centuries.

There are eight billion people on the planet. A hundred years ago there were barely two billion. So the issue isn’t that “people aren’t having kids." The issue, for a certain crowd, is that *white* people aren’t having enough kids.

You’d think the world’s first trillionaire would be an elegant, disciplined, frighteningly intelligent, mythically competent, once-in-a-century industrial genius who seemed almost superhuman. Instead we got Elon.

An arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office makes that distinction impossible. They protected him. Now they’re protecting the brand.

We shouldn’t stop referring to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as Prince Andrew just because the Royal Family would prefer we didn’t. Dropping the title conveniently distances him from the institution, as if his ties to Epstein were purely personal and unrelated to his public role.

Blending speculative fiction, satire, and modern fable, Shortcomings explores the quiet gap between who we believe we are and what we choose to tolerate. 20 stories. 300 to 900 words each. 11,500 words total. Short enough to read quickly. Strange enough to stay with you.

Looking for ARC readers for my short stories collection. In Shortcomings, familiar ideas are pushed far enough to expose what sits underneath. A bullet convinced of its own importance. A prayer answered too literally. A system that works perfectly, as long as you're not the one trapped inside it.

The labour is still there. The exploitation is still there. The difference is now you don’t even get something lasting out of it.

And yes, the working conditions back then were brutal. Dangerous, exploitative, often close to slave labour. But at least they produced things that outlived the men who built them, systems that people still use today.

200 years ago: rich men built railways, funded libraries, left a legacy of things that people could actually use. Now: rich men compete to see who can cut the most jobs, boost the share price, and sit on the biggest pile of cash. Same egos. Just less to show for it.

When I finally started publishing my writings last year, I never expected anyone would ever read them. A year on, nearly 300 people either paid for or picked up one of my books for free. Every time I struggle with motivation, I look at the dashboard and I see that it's worth it. Thank you!

My Indian neighbour has a brand new Tesla. This has complicated my previous assumption that the swastika sticker on his Volkswagen was purely cultural and not, shall we say, foreshadowing. #tesla #fuckelon

People say: “My god is real because they’re mentioned in another religion’s scripture!” My brother in Raptor, my book about a cat and my completely separate book about a dog both take place in the same museum at one point. That’s not evidence, that’s worldbuilding. #authorsky #booksky #writersky

It's funny because it's painfully accurate. Most writers would rather fight a goose than tell strangers their book exists. Yet here we are, whispering "link in bio" into the algorithmic void like Victorian ghosts trying to haunt this space.

5. They linger. A short story doesn’t need hours to land. If it works, it stays with you anyway.
120
Marcin Wojdyna @wojdynot.es · 20/08/2026
4. They match how the world feels. The world already feels fragmented, absurd, and slightly unreal. Surreal fiction isn’t escapism anymore, it’s documentation.
110
Marcin Wojdyna @wojdynot.es · 20/08/2026
3. They’re built for sharing. A short, unsettling story can be read in minutes and shared instantly. It travels better than a 400-page novel ever could.
110
Marcin Wojdyna @wojdynot.es · 20/08/2026
2. Strangeness cuts through noise. There’s too much content. Safe, familiar stories blur together. Surreal ideas stand out because they don’t behave the way readers expect.

Marcin Wojdyna @wojdynot.es · 20/08/2026
The future of literary publishing is short, strange, and slightly unsettling. 1. Attention spans have changed. People aren’t reading less, they’re reading differently. Short, self-contained pieces fit how we already consume everything else. A thread for #authorsky #booksky #writersky

Still, despite all its flaws, it gets the job done and is very unlikely to be under any foreign influence or harbour suspiciously nostalgic views about the 1930s. Which is more than can be said about any of the Reform party members or supporters.
