The Zena Programming Language @zena-lang.dev · 29/09/2026
New blog post on zena-lang.dev: Designing a Programming Language for the AI Era zena-lang.dev/blog/2026/09... Includes why I think a language good for humans and WebAssembly is good for AI, and why Zena is a project that's optimistic that humans have a place in software development.

Designing a Programming Language for the AI Era
What makes a programming language effective when AI agents write, test, and review code, and why being optimized for WebAssembly is being optimized for AI.

“I Built Non-Autoregressive Decision Models with RL a Year Ago. Then a Frontier Lab Called It a "Breakthrough".” Before Jev there was Laya laya.convaiinnovations.com (via @dherman.dev)

It's gonna be what helps with the highest IPO valuation. We'll find out soon I guess.

That's exactly the problem I have with AI. I took away the fun part of the job.

And are €3.5 in north east of Italy (with complimentar crisps), where it originated from. Originally a "poor" drink, mix of water and white wine.

Speaking for myself, I have had some of my most memorable and most important pieces of learning that came from long debates, because I absolutely disagreed with how another dev wanted to do stuff I thought they were wrong By the time I understood their POV, I also changed how I think about my work

The fun thing about doing a podcast with a pro like Lenny is that his team can slice the thing up into TikTok-style shorts after the fact, here's 48 seconds of me talking about the cognitive cost of agentic engineering

I personally ate excessive tech use in cars. Car makers will end up changing a premium for low-tech model versions of their cars for people like me, lol.

About populism, racism, immigration, etc, we also have those issues, but politics is still not as polarised as in the US, so you can have a conversation about that. Ah, you also get easily sued for defamation, so spreading total lies is not a common thing.

As a European, assuming you get a working visa somehow, it would be very difficult for you to get a job without speaking the local language fluently. There are exceptions, like Poland, though. Language fluency is also fundamental if you want to get out of the expat circle.

My wife ended up in ER with a swollen eye and lip because a cyclist hit her on the pedestrian area. It happens all the time. I risked something similar a few weeks ago. Pedestrian are for pedestrian, fullstop. I think there are ways it can be enforced.

Hard to judge without seeing the initial prompt, but you should try to give precise instructions and set boundaries. I found LLMs able to carry out complex instructions if well crafted.

We don’t live in a neutral marketplace of ideas. We live in an attention economy shaped by algorithms, tribal identity, outrage incentives, and profit models that reward engagement over accuracy.

If you were to ask me in 2019, I would’ve said around 5yrs to fully complete. But now it’s a much harder question bc OpenAI has gotten itself into a potentially existential predicament. At some level they are just trying to survive. To understand their situation you have to start at the beginning. 🧵

We’re building a new static type checker for Python, from scratch, in Rust. From a technical perspective, it’s probably our most ambitious project yet. We’re about 800 PRs deep!
