Perhaps a richer, more complicated exploration of a modern monarchy a) wouldn’t have made the mistakes in the first place but b) would have had more credible defenders b/c the merits of the representation are strong enough to make it easier to forgive the mistakes.

Oh, good. I’m just spitballing here. Another example that occurs to me: the thing w/the historical inaccuracies in Perfect Crown. Part of the issue there is that it’s a hollow representation of the premise. I’m not Korean, ofc. But the inaccuracy seems/worse more political b/c of that.

My theory is that all eruptions into global debates of kdramas are actual spurred by fans localized reactions to a specific drama’s vibes and quality. For example: Four Hands, Two Sonatas starts at 8.1 on MDL b/c of concerns about BL baiting & the comments rage, but then it’s good & now it’s 8.6.

This is also how I feel about all the new music prediction plugins (so many of them) that have been vibe coded: how do I know that an update to Logic or Live or Mac OS won’t cause the plugin to self destruct and take my project with it? And how do I trust you to be able to fix it if that happens?

A friend of my grandmother borrowed Lampedusa’s The Leopard from me thirty years ago and then never returned it. I have finally purchased a replacement copy. Picked up a used one, though, b/c the current version has an ugly Netflix tie-in promotion cover.

I'm curious: does anyone else's brain work this way? If I'm writing a longer work of fiction, there are weeks where it completely takes over everything but day job/family time & responsibilities, but generally, if I'm not also writing lit crit & producing music, my brain refuses to write fiction.

I have them about twice a year when they call to me from the vending machines on campus Today one of my co-workers share these chocolate clusters that had potato chips, pretzels, and corn chips in them. They were very corn chippy. Not bad, but the potato chips added nothing.

I bounced off of Light about a decade ago. I will get back to the Kefahuchi Tract at some point because I think is MJH is now one of the few authors where I’m going to read almost the entire ouevre. But not where I recommend going next.

The one other option is his story collection You Should Come With Me Now. To me, that and/or Sunken Land or Viriconium are the best ways to know if you get on with MJH’s work.

My own opinion is that you should start with either Look at Me or The Next Big Thing, with the proviso that if you don’t like Look at Me, try one of her ‘90s or ‘00s novels.
