A walk around Rainham Marshes RSPB took us past the European Paper Wasps nesting in the railing. Beautiful and remarkable creatures. Well worth reading Endless Forms by Seiran Sumner to appreciate how amazing social wasps are. #wasps.

Fungi meeting today in Northaw Great Wood, Herts. Very very dry but we managed a few. Yesterday was #fungusday so pics of a few. Names in Alt. #fungi. Herts seems to have lacked much rain so far, things might improve if some decent rain comes before the end of the season.

Couple of galls from Northaw Great Wood today. Janetia cerris on leaf of Turkey Oak, a gall midge. The other rather stunning gall in the stem of a Hornbeam is rather spectacular (unknown causer). #galls
Top surface of Turkey Oak leaf with pale galls of Janetia cerris. Underside surface of Turkey Oak leaf with pale hairy galls of Janetia cerris. These fall off when mature, to over winter on the ground. This is fairly new to Britain. Spreading around Herts. A Hornbeam trunk with a large knobbly gall surrounding it. 14 of 12 last night. Better than expected as cool and windy. Lovely capucina form of Green-brindled Crescent. #TeamMoth.

Much better than expected last night, with 24 species and a nice range of autumn moths. It felt cooler than the night before. #TeamMoth

Thanks Tim. I don’t seem to feel pain from it, just it’s irritating and made my face swell up.

Similar experience. Did two hours under elms which seemed like a good idea till we got 25 Hornets, one if which decided to go behind my specs. Result a sting. Now look like I did a few rounds in the boxing ring. Big moon meant almost no moths so we gave up.

41 of 14 last night. Temp down and big moon. But pleased with 4th garden record of Figure of Eight, last one was 2022. A declining species here. A beautiful moth. A late Mottled Rustic too. #TeamMoth.
Figure of Eight. Undoubtedly a favourite with pirates 🏴‍☠️. “Argh” 🦜. 😂

William Bishop @wjrpb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
It was warm last night, which doubled species here to 36 in garden. Uncommon for me were Scarce Silver-line, Bordered Sallow and 2 Autumnal Rustics. Plus a few of the more usual autumn species. Temp drops again tonight so back to teens I suspect. #TeamMoth. Good luck on the Point 🤞.

The Government is asking for views about the good causes National Lottery funding should support. But in the 'call for evidence', nature is not included in the description of 'heritage' anymore. This is potentially BAD NEWS. You can help here:
action.wildlifetrusts.org
Nature could miss out from Lottery funding – have your say
Respond to the call to action to share nature IS heritage and the National Lottery needs to continue to support nature.

129 of 43 was a slight improvement on recent nights. Spotted a Plume on the gutter above the window so climb on bench to retrieve it and was pleased to find it was a Triangle Plume nfg and not one I was expecting here. Nice Raspberry ripple Vestal. Tried Death’s-head lure, no luck though. #TeamMoth
Triangle Plume. Vestal moth. Lovely Raspberry ripple coloured wings. Skull I picked up on yesterday’s walk. Haven’t worked out who it came from yet. Cleaned it up and left it to dry overnight in front of the moth trap

In Panshanger Park last night with @rahtringbirder.bsky.social for ongoing survey. Autumn species (some of my favourite moths) starting now. Antler x3 was pleasing as not abundant in Herts. #TeamMoth.

Besides it being the wrong moth, how does one use an apple as a size comparison? Is there a standard sized apple? 🍏

Promoted me to check a couple of Herts Hop sites (we only had one county dot showing on the moth website). One site, Hertford, had a few mines. Positive outcome. #TeamMoth.

We had over 1050 SMW at Hexton on 29/07. On a night with around 2k recorded moths. Almost certainly an under estimate of SMWs and moths which was probably nearer 3-4k, but there is a point at which even with 3 people you can’t cope 🙂.

Delighted to find a superb Convolvulus Hawkmoth in the garden moth trap this morning. Only the 3rd one I've seen in Carinish, N Uist in over 13 years. Also nice that it's stopped raining for a couple of hours!

Attractive plant but probably becomes problematic. It grows in Baldock, Herts and has become rather extensive with 1000s of plants are growing now.

Going out to empty the trap at 02:58 this morning. Inside the house on the door! Garden tick (769). All that Buddleja watching for nothing! At least it’s easy to get a good look at while still. #TeamMoth.

I’m well down on them too. Only getting 15/16 a night instead of 60+. It’s a relief, wouldn’t mind never seeing another JT. We did a field survey t’other might in N Herts (7 traps) and estimated 1000+ Small Mottled Willows.
