In the early 20th century the US passed immigration laws claiming some ethnic groups could not assimilate. The Immigration Act of 1924 set quotas to keep out Southern and Eastern Europeans, Jews, and Asians labeled “unassimilable.” Rooted in eugenics and racial hierarchy.
