He really did. Below is a random example of Brom's usual art style. It's as far from "Pern" much less anything I'd associate with "Masterharper Robinton" as you could get. I wonder if he was looking for a similar kind of exposure boost from the Pern books that Whelan got in his career...
An illustration by the artist Brom. It has a woman dressed in what looks like red leather fetish gear with a corset with buckles and a mask that seems like it has metal bug eyes. She holds a long edged weapon of some sort. Before her is some sort of lizardish creature in armor gripping a stone ledge, and behind her is a strange demonic creature also wearing some bits of armor, with a black body, pale pink skin, and wide yellow eyes behind a steel mask. The woman has one arm raised, and it seems covered in blood.

Offhand meta-fandom thought... I've always found it funny that the cover for The Masterharper of Pern was done, not by Michael Whelan, but by Brom. The cover is so bright, and such a departure from Brom's typical "dark fantasy" style.
A crop of the cover for Anne McCaffrey's book The Masterharper of Pern. Art is by Brom, but he has imitated the dragon design that Michael Whelan used for earlier Pern covers. The dragon in this image is a vivid blue against an orange and yellow sky, and has its tail curled around a rock. A brown-haired man who is presumably Masterharper Robinton is standing in a curl of his tail, holding a wine glass and a very lyre-shaped harp. He is wearing pants, jerkin or vest, and cloak of brown, and an off-white shirt, and has jaw-length brown hair. In the background, there is a dragonrider riding the blue dragon (probably C'gan riding blue Tagath), and a random boy sitting on a rock playing pipes. The boy might represent Robinton as a small child.

This panel from Unsounded: The Red Cost slew me. Actual laugh-out-loud moment. www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/Th...
Sette's sidekick, Jivi, has dressed up as a Black Tongue apprentice to infiltrate a place he's not supposed to be. In this panel, he says (with arms spread wide and a hammy face of distress), "This corpse! DEAD! And this one! Dead! WHERE is the QUALITY CONTROL!"

Corpses, of course, are supposed to be dead. You can't make zombies (plods) any other way.

A mural black void cat with an open mouth and sharp teeth with a speech bubble placed to say whatever is being quoted, which in this case is the endless screaming bot going AAAAAAAA
