🧠 Pain is not only a sensory signal. In mice, aversive states activated an mPFC–PBN pathway and increased mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity. Inhibiting it reduced both effects, revealing a cortical–brainstem link between emotion and pain. doi.org/10.1038/s420... #neuroscience #neuroskeye

🪰 Vision is not a straight line from eye to brain. A neuron-by-neuron map of the male fruit-fly brain shows visual signals spreading broadly, then converging in regions tuned to particular features—while fine spatial maps persist deep in the central brain. A beautiful wiring map. #Neuroscience #art

🪰 The first complete male fruit-fly CNS connectome maps 166,700 neurons at synaptic resolution. Most sensory and motor wiring is shared with females; sex-specific circuits cluster in higher-order centers, with 289 male-specific, 71 female-specific and 138 dimorphic neuron types. #art #neuroskyence

🧬 DDIAS protects DNA during cell division and supports brain development. It shields single-stranded DNA during mitosis. When lost, neural progenitor cells accumulate damage in human organoids and zebrafish, linking genome stability to neurodevelopment. #Neuroscience #Genetics #BrainDevelopment

🧠 The brain's 'task-negative' network isn't off when you focus - the 'switching' network isn't just a switch. A scoping review of 81 papers argues the Triple Network Model needs updating: brain networks are dynamic, context-dependent, and heterogeneous across atlases. #Neuroscience #BrainNetworks

🐟 Even a fish brain may organize senses hierarchically. In zebrafish, a thalamocortical-like pathway carries visual and vibrational signals to the pallium, where neurons range from sensory-specific to multimodal responses. A possible shared principle across vertebrates. #Neuroscience #neuroskyence
Diagram of the zebrafish brain showing a thalamocortical-like pathway carrying visual and vibrational information to the pallium, where sensory-specific and multimodal neurons form a hierarchical processing network.

🧠 Cortical shape may help decide which regions connect. A neural-field model based on geometric eigenmodes reproduced connectome patterns across humans, chimpanzees, macaques, marmosets and mice. A model-based clue, not proof of causation. #neuroscience #cell #art #brain #biology #neuroskyence

Autism risk may converge in protein networks, not just genes. Mapping 100 risk genes found 1,800+ interactions, 87% previously unreported. Patient mutations rewired links and altered neurodevelopment in organoids. Mechanistic work, not a treatment. #neuroskyence #Neuroscience #Science #art
Visual summary of an autism protein-interaction network. The diagram shows how risk proteins converge in shared complexes and how patient-derived mutations can rewire interactions, including FOXP1–FOXP4, with consequences for cortical neurodevelopment.

Older mice did not simply respond more slowly-they were less consistent. Across 18,000 neurons in 16 brain regions, ageing increased neural variability and weakened noise-quenching after stimuli. Mouse data, but a clue to cognitive ageing. #art #Neuroscience #neuroskyence

The skull may hide an immune hub we never noticed. Cranial bone marrow contains lymph-node-like zones that train immune cells for the brain. In mice with glioma, scalp stimulation improved survival. Human marrow shows the same cells, though this is early. #neuroskyence #Neuroscience #art #immune

Microglia may age because ancient viral DNA wakes up. In mice, losing DAXX let endogenous retroviruses reactivate, driving inflammation and senescence. A striking epigenetic route to brain aging, though the causal work is preclinical. #blues #art #photography #neuroscience #microglia

The primitive streak is where an embryo starts organizing its body plan — head from tail, left from right, the very first axis of being human. The twist: they rebuilt it using stem cells + extra-embryonic cells (amniotic ectoderm, trophoblast, mesoderm), with no actual embryo involved.

Scrolling bioRxiv and found a fresh one 🧠 New preprint packed levodopa into DNA nanocages for Parkinson's zebrafish — tremors eased, swimming steadied, damage backed off. Early days, it's a fish. But DNA cages into a failing brain? Still feels sci-fi. doi.org/10.64898/202...
