You know, the race! Against, what.. China is it? To win destroying creative industries and many mid-skilled jobs! Yes very important goals, these.

Occasional reminder: I’m more active on Mastodon. Bluesky is alright but it in practise it doesn’t really solve many of the issues that lead to Twitter becoming.. well that. Truly decentralised platform solve a lot more of them. mstdn.social/@wiredfire

lol there’s a good reason for that, and an awful lot in the EU want nothing to do with AI-embuggered Siri

Scale and expansion. But it’s all problematic which is kinda my point.

Both suck but one is exponentially more of a problem. Neither are good but suggesting we give AI data centres a free pass because Nestle are also being crap is a deeply flawed concept.

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 07/09/2026

You’re being disingenuous. Nestle can get in the bin, no argument there, but their abuse of water is In the millions of gallons a year where as AI data centres abuse *billions* of gallons.

Consider this my annual note of ire regarding the obscene volume of Leeds carnival. It's utterly moronic that it rolls around on a bank holiday weekend but it's always chosen to be on the Monday instead of something obvious like the Saturday or Sunday. Something something bellends.

Perhaps but accurac matters when dealing with these asshats. Don’t give those that support them an opening to a sliver of legitimacy in attacking the messages against them.

You’re better than repeating false things. We don’t need to make up stuff about these people, there’s plenty about them that’s real to shine a light on. Spreading misinformation weakens the stand against them. leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2...

I’m not entirely convinced that cider followed by a very little rum on a work night is one of my more wise moves. Fortunately I can justify it with the age-old cry: FOR SCIENCE!

Has me back to imagining how awesome it would have been is a truly totally decentralised web could have manifested itself and become both sustainable and The Norm.

Data centres are, in general, a necessity for the modern Internet to function. They are not, in themselves, problematic. But like all things in excess they are deeply unhealthy. Especially when their purposes are flippant and unnecessary.

So Burnham has essentially used this system as a "hey look at me, I'm doing something!" tool. Explain to me again, Andy, how you're meant to be different to other politicians? I'd expect this from Ralph Wiggum, not the "King of the North".

010

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 14/08/2026

Also the message will be utterly ineffective. Anyone dumb enough to not realise the risk of fire sources right now isn't going to listen to a government message.

110

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 14/08/2026

Also a massively dick move to do it at what is bedtime for millions of kids. This message could absolutely have waited until tomorrow morning.

(yes I'm aware it's more serious than that but it wasn't a warranted use of the "the end is coming!" alert system for a few reasons. This was political gesturing

I'm happy to have ROMs of all the games I've legitimately owned. They won't go away when a license expires or a server goes offline or a company folds. They aren't locked to a specific device or platform. I just have the games however I would like to access them.

000

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 13/08/2026

NSO is ok in as far as you're not buying games but renting access to a library, like Netflix etc.. not having the option at all to buy titles kinda sucks, but then again even that is temporary until the download servers get decommissioned.

Bluesky IS just like twitter. It’s on the same path. Right now it feels a bit like early twitter did but it's quickly showing signs of the same challenges that ultimately leave it vulnerable to the same endpoint. Actually decentralised platforms are far less vulnerable to this.

010

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 13/08/2026

Hold on - so is it an AI model as the headline suggests or on-device machine-learning as the body of the article suggests? they are not the same things and conflating them is a pretty significant journalistic failing.

010

Wiredfire @wiredfire.spacecookies.co.uk · 13/08/2026

Another case of assuming something in “the cloud“ is a sufficient backup solution. It’s not. Cloud storage can be *a* great backup solution but only alongside redundant copies and backups.

Posting false information about election candidates is one of the last remaining forms of criminal libel in the UK, fwiw. If your algorithm/AI is bad enough that it isn't immune to this kind of fuck up, it is not ready for deployment! Turn it the fuck off!

Gervais confuses me. Fundamentally I agree with a great deal of his views but he just comes off as such a dick. With a few, earlier in his career, exceptions I think a lot of it comes down to maybe trying too hard? Or playing the provocateur bit too much?
