The platform has been able to move the needle in surprising ways. In August, when the majority-Black city of Gary, Indiana, lost power for two weeks, causing a food shortage, among other safety concerns, it was users on TikTok and Threads who first raised awareness about the historic blackout.

Bluesky initially announced itself as one of the first serious alternatives to X. It has proven to be a more secure social ecosystem for Black users, but it hasn’t exactly swayed public discourse in the way Black Twitter did with #OscarsSoWhite or #IfTheyGunnedMeDown.

Rema Hammami, an anthropologist at Birzeit University who has researched checkpoints, calls the current situation unprecedented. “Every single community, village, every single Palestinian city is going to be a separate prison.”

The checkpoints aren’t mere inconveniences. They can be dangerous—deadly, even. Nearly two-thirds of people in the West Bank say checkpoints have been a barrier to their access to medical care.

WIRED @wired.com · 2h
A quarter of West Bank parents said their children have never met close relatives who live in other parts of the West Bank. And nearly a third of people under the age of 25 say they’ve never even left their own governorate: a generation being locked in.

Across the West Bank, checkpoints have begun to reshape how businesses operate. At Sama Pharmaceuticals, a medicine factory, workers sometimes spend the night to avoid checkpoints, and job descriptions now include a requirement that candidates live in the city where the factory is located.

The toll of the commute has caused some Palestinians living in the West Bank to give up their careers or their studies. More than one in ten people in the West Bank say they’ve moved to other cities or regions because of checkpoints, and 31 percent say they’re considering moving.
1101
WIRED @wired.com · 2h
The average West Bank commuter–someone who drives several times a week–loses about an hour and a half each week to additional travel time in an effort to avoid checkpoints. Over the course of a year, that amounts to 77 hours lost. For some, the delays are far longer.

WIRED @wired.com · 2h
According to UN data from December 2025, at least 925 fixed and temporary checkpoints, metal gates, roadblocks, and earth mounds divide the West Bank. This fracturing, which has accelerated since 2023, has torn families apart, stifled the economy, and impeded access to essential services.
