Legin, in Southeast Portland, was one of the biggest restaurants on U.S. West Coast, but after nearly 20 years of operation, it had to be demolished in 2012 in order to make way for Portland Community College’s campus expansion.

It’s sad to learn that Richmond Night Market ends after this season. The 26-year-old annual event, which runs for the entire summer, has been an attraction to people across North America and beyond. I’m honoured to have covered federal small business minister Mary Ng’s visit to the market in 2019.

Oregon City has become the latest addition to Oregon and SW Washington municipalities redesigning their city flags over the past year. Vancouver adopted a new one in November and Hillsboro in January.

I was nominated for Emmys for the first time, thanks to a documentary about the Yat Sing Music Club, an 80-year-old Cantonese opera group, in Portland Chinatown. I didn’t win any trophy to bring home, but it’s still a great experience to dress nicely and cheer on colleagues who won.

I still remember my first visit to AHSC in October 2024, just several days before my homecoming trip to Wisconsin. I was amazed by the comprehensive wraparound services offered there, making the institution feel more like a community center than a mental health clinic.

From there, I reached out to the Smithsonian for support from experts and access to the company’s archived materials, but unfortunately, I didn’t get much. Only a small fraction of the materials — which the Loy family transferred to the Smithsonian a decade ago — are available online.

It’s a coincidence that this story came out today just two hours before the news of US attack on Iran broke. Over the past two weeks I spoke to artists and incarcerees’ descendants before the opening of a new art exhibition at JAMO, with which I’ve collaborated on several stories before.
