Fossil fuel lobbyists have historically been granted access to COP through trade assoc such the Int'l Chamber of Commerce. Theres an application process for that; the Secretariat has discretion. But: in recent years they have also become part of member states' delegation. Thats a much harder fight.

Indeed, a blurrier definition is what they want . I noticed that when I had a field visit to a fossil fuel company in Brussels.

Number of fossil fuel lobbyists at most recent COPs: COP26 (2021): 503 COP27 (2022): 636 COP28 (2023): 2,456 COP29 (2024): 1,773 Blame the petrostate hosts, I guess. But if trend does not reverse in Belem (Brazil) next year, COPs really seem to have been put in the hands of fossil fuel lobbies.

Fossil fuel lobbyists often use “renewable gas/fuel” to mislead the public to protect their interests. Let’s hope COP29 will have some good news on climate mitigation!

More and more evidence that the costs of not responding to high-risk events happening around us in our society (sitting around, hoping they just go away, like many are doing re climate) are way higher than doing the things that expert tell us we should do. If only politics was this simple.
