I've used the one at Waverley on the bridge to Calton Road once in each direction as an experiment. I recently tried the one at the north end of the FRB upwards, but didn't think it was wise to even try going down as it would have been on the wrong side, and I wouldn't have felt remotely in control.
Photo from the viewpoint up the steps from the southbound lane of the Forth Road Bridge, with the northernmost bridge tower in view. Beyond the walkway in the foreground is a set of steps, with railings at the side, with a small slippy metal cycle wheel channel on the left.

Now that we're almost three-quarters of a day into October, has anyone been past The Dome on George Street today to see if they have their Christmas lights up yet?

Maybe modernise the horse thing by reporting someone on your street to the council for parking on the footway or across a dropped kerb.

So would a nice low-CoG recumbent cyclecraft, for people with noticeable wobble reflexes who might make an upright position high above the floats hazardous.

The problem then is that the crossing is back north at the mouth of the road, past another relatively narrow footway with a bus stop on it, set back from the road edge but thereby also pinching the footway more. If footways are being widened, could that bus stop also move a bit southwards?

There's always the route around the back and between the galleries, but it's not obvious if you don't know it and not always available if there's an event on with or some seasonal frippery-vendors filling up the square.
100
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
It being a street corner in the city centre, it's also a prime gawping spot where people will suddenly stop dead, suitcase and all. The option of scuttling up the steps and between the columns of the galley entrance to pass them is not open to everyone, nor should it have to be.
100
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I assume this can never be widened, as the westbound road/tramway is already a single lane for everything; likewise, the pedestrian guard rail will have to stay, so that no-one tripping over or falling down gets anywhere near the traffic.
110
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Whilst the Waverley Steps area is indeed fraught, particularly if trying to get from a bus to the station, let us not forget that it's also a pain to get around the corner of the gallery to cross the Mound. The footway at the foot of the steps is barely wide enough for a tourist with a suitcase.
162
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
not to mention the pedestrian crossings at which, after stopping, I am sometimes whooshed past by a motor vehicle containing someone too important to stop. There's also the small matter of having to use a bit of Queen St or Princes St anyway if heading further east than St David St.
030
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
George St feels the slowest in general pace, but the central strip of transverse parking along the whole street and varying ideas drivers have of which way (if any) they should look when entering or leaving the spaces makes it exciting even when there are no ice rinks and drunkards in the bike lane,
130
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Queen Street is very much "am I feeling assertive enough?" with the choice of up to three lanes and side roads on both sides, more stops and starts and accelerations and the full range of vehicle types and driving styles, rather than just buses and taxis.
140
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
If Princes St had more side roads it would be more of a pain, but as it's really only one lane (except at the ends or when passing buses) you can really concentrate on keeping your front wheel away from deep, dark holes next to slippery metal hatches (and listenng out for weaponised taxis).
120
wingpig @wingpig.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Princes Street is worse than the other two for crumbly concrete, holes and ruts on the approaches from Shandwick Place and Lothian Road, and the large numbers of large holes surrounding utility access hatches at various points all the way along. Queen Street only has a couple of craters.

There are a huge number of factors affecting the routes I choose to go east or west through the city centre, and it's never "that's the quickest" or "that's the nicest"; more likely, it's "which particular group of horrors am I prepared to tolerate at this moment" depending on bike, time, load, etc.

That didn't take long. Given the impatience with which the driver of a white Jeep had shown following me from Lindsay Road and past OT (overtaking whilst approaching red lights by driving half on the tram tracks twice) I didn't follow them through Tower St in case it spurred them on

Hopefully the jinking turn at the east end of Tower Street will be unpalatable to most motor vehicle drivers, until their satnav starts routing them through to avoid a couple of seconds at the traffic lights. Hopefully it's too tight a turn to be attractive to large and heavy construction vehicles.

Optimist: The cup is half-full. Pessimist: The cup is half-empty. Edinburgh council junction designers: The narrow, tiny cup must now be filled and emptied in two distinct stages, each separated by a five-minute wait whilst motor vehicles fill their huge, wide cups.

#EdTravCyc I'd give the Innocent Tunnel a miss just now if you're heading uphill/towards St Leonard's (and hold your breath going downhill) - brain-dissolving quantities of spraycan solvent filling the air of the upper two-thirds.

The road is only a single lane each way at this point, so the sign would absolutely have been able to be put at the mouth of the closed road - it's not like vehicles which had been planning to go left would be in the wrong lane or anything.

@edinburghcouncil.bsky.social This very wide sign obstructing more than half the width of the north footway of Duke Street does not appear to have considered that it will force pedestrians onto the road. @scottishwater.bsky.social and/or their contractors did not yet appear to be onsite at 1000.

@scottishwater.bsky.social Do all these signs for a road closure affecting road traffic on Academy Street have to be quite so extravagantly obstructive of the footway, particularly the really wide sign on the narrow footway of the busy Duke St.?
