I swear if the facebook groups and shitty radio stations don't kill smooth music, the AI art will

It's like Campbell's Hero's Journey. I feel we have all grown as people as a result of that exchange.

Update: They have just made the standard version of PlayoutONE free forever! (Note, I'm not sponsored or anything, it's just been good software for my use case)

Awesome to hear! Thanks for the kind words 🫡

Appreciate you! Thanks for the support man 🫡

Yacht rock and yacht rock adjacent radio. Nothing but smooth sailing 24 hours a day.

THANK YOU to everyone who has tuned in, sent me lovely messages, recorded bumpers for us, suggested tunes, told their mates, upvoted the reddit posts, and shared stuff on social media (i'm terrible at that lol). LOVE YOUSE ALL! Matt smoothsailingradio.com

I love that stat because i'm not out here trying to be the BIGGEST thing in the world, I just want it to be the BEST it can be. I'd rather a small base of dedicated listeners than a large base of indifferent listeners. TSL over cume and engagement over clicks, any day.

151

The weekly listener count was surprisingly steady over the 6 months but the cumulative listening hours has steadily gone up, which indicates that we're not necessarily getting MORE listeners, but the listeners we have are listening for LONGER.

The most dedicated listeners were from the US, Australia, Germany, Canada and the Philippines. The biggest platform for listening was the Radio Garden app. A large percentage of people were listening from their computers, and shout out to my Winamp users 🦙.

We started with around 550 songs in rotation and have increased that to around 770. We've got an hourly yacht rock facts segment, we ensure at least one Essential song is played per hour, drop educational bumpers and highlight the Doobie Bounce catalogue (thanks The Craptain!).

I think the answer is yes. We've been on air for 12 months and i've been collecting stats for about 7 of those. Since then we've had: 81,186 total connections to the stream 62,540 cumulative hours of listening time 17,032 unique listeners

Smooth Sailing Radio turns 1 🥳 Around this time last year we started an experiment: Could you have a yacht rock station that appealed to the normies, had enough deep cuts for the heads and without taking a dump on the term yacht rock? Balancing the familiarity, discovery and authenticity scales?

Paying tribute to the goat on the program tomorrow. Yes, his music is flawless, but he doesn't get the recognition he deserves for his mullet game.

SUPER NERD ALERT: If you want to get crazy with the full radio station thing this is how my other station, Radio PVS, is setup in my spare bedroom:

Then you just hit up the different internet radio aggregators and liknk your shoutcast server info: Radio Garden, MyTuner Radio, TuneIn etc. Happy broadcasting!

MyRadioStream.com - Free Shoutcast Servers (Free Stream Hosting)

MyRadioStream is the shoutcast host that I use. $5 per month and does what it needs to do. I have no use for more expensive plans that include Auto DJ stuff. It's always rubbish and I prefer to do it myself with the playout software. myradiostream.com

BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool) is also free and is a super simple encoder to get your audio out of the box and up to your shoutcast server for distribution. It can also record and log audio that goes through it. danielnoethen.de

Stereo Tool does all the processing and is free software. I use AGC (automatic gain control) to keep the songs levels consistent, the multiband compressor for colour and a bit of noise gating. It's super flexible and a ton of fun to play around with. www.thimeo.com/stereo-tool/
