Cantina Pieruccini winery, Caxias do Sul, Brazil, c. 1910. From 1875 on, tens of thousands of Italian immigrants, mostly from northern Italy, settled Brazil's Serra Gaúcha, bringing their winemaking traditions. Small family cantinas like this one laid the foundation of Brazil's modern wine industry.

The most commom reasons: Returned shipments: wine rejected by the buyer, unsold, or failed to clear customs abroad. Customs zone flows: wine moving back from bonded warehouses or free-trade zones gets logged as an import.

Brazilian "Champagne" label, 1950s. In 1951, Frenchman Georges Aubert moved to Brazil and began making sparkling wine in Garibaldi, Rio Grande do Sul. The label touts his French expertise ("Técnico Francês") and tank fermentation (Charmat). Brazil legally protected the name "Champagne" only in 2012.

The ups and downs and ups of Malbec in Argentina. Today's 20+ year Malbec boom is not the first. In 1962, Argentina had 58,577 ha of Malbec, 25% more than today (46,890 ha). Its share was 22.5% then, 23.9% now. In between, Malbec nearly vanished, falling to 10,000 ha (4.6%) in the mid-1990s.

Monthly employment changes in the U.S., Jan 2021–Sep 2026. Job growth has cooled steadily since the post-COVID rebound (only 29,000 jobs added in Sep 2026, preliminary) — a pattern that resembles the slowdown in U.S. wine consumption. Coincidence, or connection?

So many "baby" vegetables. "Baby" vegetables took off in the US in the mid-1980s, and "baby" has no legal definition. "Baby" greens are ordinary varieties harvested young, while most "baby" carrots are full-size carrots cut, peeled into 2-inch pieces. Of course, "baby" commands a price premium.

Languedoc-Roussillon has lost over half its vineyards since 1974, from 435k to about 195k hectares, while Gironde (Bordeaux) changed far less, from 103k to 91.5k. California overtook Languedoc-Roussillon in 2012, but since 2018 all three regions have been shrinking, and the decline has accelerated.

French customs data show France's bottled wine exports to the U.S. fell 18.9% in value in 2025, to €1.9 billion, led by Languedoc-Roussillon (−52.6%) and red Bordeaux (−32.1%). Prices fell more than volume (−11.8% vs. −8.0%). Whether it reflects tariffs, cheaper wines, or a stronger euro is unclear.
